Cut at Packers final 53 after one pre-season game

Updated.  Because of Bulaga's injury, Vince Young's signing and more, a number of notable changes.

QUARTERBACKS (2)

Keep:  Rodgers, Young

Practice Squad (PS):  Coleman

Cut:  Harrell
Comments:  Just love the idea of having a veteran QB like Young -- someone who has started many NFL games, won many of them -- behind Rodgers, and one with inherent physical ability, innate running skills, and just maybe, at 30 years old, mature enough to take advantage of another chance.  Certainly better than Harrell, who is not inherently talented and never started an NFL game.  Not sure that Coleman is even worth developing further on the Practice Squad, but will for now give him one of those coveted spots.  I actually think the Packers will find someone better to develop after final cut-downs.

RUNNING BACKS (5)

Keep:  HBs Lacy (D2), Franklin (D4), Starks, Green, FB Kuhn (30)

PUP:  Harris

Cut:  HB Peace, FB Amosa

Comments:  McCarthy just commented that he still sees Harris as a starting RB.  But since he's been on PUP, is this a smart way to "stash" him for a bit?  In my view, if you can, it allows Kuhn to keep his job.  I still think Kuhn's only advantage is he's still the best pass blocker for Rodgers.  Is that enough to warrant a spot on the 53?  Would like to keep Peace or Amosa, but with 6 backs ahead of them and only 8 Practice Squad spots, can't find one.

WIDE RECEIVERS (5)

Keep:  Cobb, Nelson, Jones, Boykin, Ross

PS:  Johnson (D7A)

Cut:  Dorsey (D7B), Walker, Gillett, White, Hines

Injured Reserve:  Cunningham

Comments:  No change from last time.  Would only keep 6 if compelling -- and so far it's not.  Betting on Ross being the primary kick returner.  Right now, Johnson kept on PS purely on potential.  And yes, while Walker's caught a few passes, I prefer to bet on a draft choice with much better size and speed.

TIGHT ENDS (5)

Keep:  Finley, Quarless, Mulligan, Bostick, Taylor

Cut:  Williams, Stoneburner

Comments:  If keeping Kuhn, maybe they only go with 4 TEs.  Not quite as sure about Quarless anymore, hoping he comes back, gets some playing time.  Mulligan a keeper for the run game.  I think Bostick replaces the incredibly underwhelming Williams.  Taylor stays primarily for Special Teams.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)

Keep:  Bakhitari (D4A), Sitton, Dietrich-Smith, Lang, Barclay, Newhouse, Van Roten, Taylor

PUP:  Sherrod, Tretter (4B)

PS:  Datko

Cut:  Gerhart, Lewis, Hughes

IR:  Bulaga

Comments:  Lots of changes here, starting unfortunately with Bulaga to IR.  Betting Barclay wins RT job, making Newhouse the backup OT on both sides.  Therefore, Van Roten and rookie FA Taylor make it as the backups inside -- Van Roten primarily at C, Lane at G.  Still have hopes for Datko at an OT, so keep him on PS.  Still a chance Sherrod and Tretter can come back and help this year if needed.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Keep:  Jones (D1), Raji, Pickett (33), Daniels, Wilson, Neal, Jolly (30)

PUP:  Worthy

PS:  Boyd (D5B)

Cut:  Pena, Miller

Comments:  No changes.  Still keeping 7 because Neal hybrid DL/OLB.  Trgovac says Jolly getting better every week.  Think there's room for him.  Appears Boyd needs lots of work, so PS seems right for him.  Like Pena's size, potential to be Pickett's possible replacement, but no room for on PS.  Future NT more likely in next year's draft.

LINEBACKERS (9)

Keep:  OLBs Matthews, Perry, Moses, Palmer (D6), ILBs Hawk, Jones, Manning, Lattimore, Francois

PS:  OLB Mulumba, ILB Barrington (7C)

Cut:  OLB Savage, ILB Reed

Comments:  Keeping OLB Palmer right now, but mostly on potential.  Maybe Mulumba makes it and Palmer goes to PS.  Either way, I like keeping both around as developmental pass-rushers.  Manning and Lattimore looking good, coaches quoted as saying Francois having excellent camp.  Need backup LBs for STs.  Found room for Barrington on PS as well.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9)

Keep:  CBs Williams (30), Shields, Heyward, House, Hyde (D5A), Ss Burnett, McMillian, Jennings, Bush

PUP:  S Richardson

PS:  CBs Nixon, Smith

Cut:  CB Means, Ss Fulton, Powell, Banjo

Comments:  Bush still makes it as 9th DB and best ST player.  9 DBs may be slightly light, but reserving 2 slots on PS.  Can never have enough CBs, and both Nixon and Smith have size and speed.  Means has the latter but not the former.  No word yet on Richardson.  But even if cleared, he'll need time to come back, not ready for 53.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Keep:  Tavecchio, Masthay, Goode

Cut:  Crosby

Comments:  Now I'm thinking our placekicker may not even be on the roster, will grab a veteran on final cut-downs.
