Re: LeBron James: “That one right there made you the greatest of all time”

Larry Bird is one of the most clutch players in history, so much so, he used to tell the opposing players where exactly he was going to get the ball to win the game and then he'd do just what he said, and win the game. Lebron misses all kinds of shots in crucial situations and has his teammates bail him out. Bird's trash talk alone would have Lebron cowering in the corner crying, and most don't consider Bird the GOAT as good as he was. MJ would drop 40 on you if you looked at him wrong.

I wonder how often LeBron would foul out in the 80's NBA? His game is so much about his physicality, and while guys like Bird and Majic played physically, they also dominated with other aspects of the game. The Hick from French Lick was no slouch.

Larry Bird is a top 5 player without a doubt. Not a smarter player ever. If he played today, all of today’s so called “best” would be looking up at him. James saying that just solidifies what is wrong with the argument that he is the greatest. The statement about Jordan and pissing him off... that’s so true. You’re not going to score if MJ decides you can’t. And when Giannis surpasses lebron, I’ll smile...

You can access Bill Simmons' all time rankings here back in 2010. https://www.basketball-referen...simmons_pyramid.html He's often full of himself, but at least Simmons makes an effort to provide his rationale. He had Lebron at #20 back then - pre-titles. I think he has Bill Russell too high (#2), but I otherwise mostly agree with him. The question is where to put the guys after this decade - Lebron, Durant, Curry. I'd drop Russell to about #5 or #6 on the list. I'd put Lebron after Kobe at...

Lebron is a physical beast, but you have to wonder how he'd have fared if teams were allowed to do some Pistons "Jordan Rules" stuff to him. Jordan was a mean SOB and did everything with an edge. He was pathologically addicted to winning and would do anything to succeed. That made him the GOAT athlete and a POS human being at times, but there aren't many wired like him. Maybe peak Tiger Woods comes close. The Pistons beat the shit out of him physically for years and he kept picking himself...

That’s a really good point about the rule changes. The hand check alone changed things forever especially for guards. Guys like Oscar and MJ and Bird and Stockton put up huge numbers when defenders could have their hands all over them. I’m not sure Curry or LeBron or Harden would have survived as teams would have worked them over. Westbrook probably could have because despite his quirks he’s one tough and physical SOB. Gary Payton probably wouldn’t have a job in today’s NBA.

I think he belongs in the 6-10 range. I know at times, LeBron has taken over games in clutch situations, but I have seen him at other times absolutely not want to take the shot in other clutch situations. Jordan, Magic, Bird, Jabbar - they all are more clutch, imo. I even get irritated by the "James is GOAT" talk. No way.

I lived in Massachusetts for close to 30 years. It may have changed, but historically Red Sox have always been #1 with the Bruins a strong #2. Before Bird came along, I don't know, but after his arrival, football may have been #4 as preferred professional sports teams. Actually, I have no idea where bruins rank these days.

Re: Kobe Bryant (RIP)

MichiganPacker2 ·
Kobe was one of the most complicated professional athletes in my lifetime. Probably the only guy at this level of complication is Tiger Woods. Kobe had great academic test scores coming out of high school. With his drive and intelligence, he could have gone to law school or been the CEO of a big company. Maybe a surgeon. He would have been good at whatever profession he decided to pursue. He was intelligent, articulate, and driven. He was thoughtful in the manner of Kareem or Bill Russell.

If they are going to change the logo, I'd like to see them go to a "Mt. Rushmore" style logo. Put the silhouettes of 4-5 guys on it. Keep Jerry West and add Kareem doing a sky hook, MJ flying through the air from the FT line, etc. Have the fans vote on it. Kobe was a top 10 player all-time, but if he wouldn't have died tragically, he wouldn't even be in the conversation for the logo. Here's Bill Simmons' effort to rank the top players of all-time in 2010 (the last year Kobe won a title). If...

Re: '70-71 Bucks 7th best team ever

I remember the year (1982) the Bucks SWEPT the Larry Bird Celtics. That was incredible. But, then they had to play the Malone 76'ers. Fo fo fo changed to fo fi fo with Bucks winning one game though the first game in Philly was only a 2 point OT loss. How could any team have to beat Celtics, 6'ers, and Lakers in back to back to back 7 game series? And yeah, I sure remember the 71 team.

While it is true Bird had a much better cast than Lebron, the quality of the top teams was also much greater (Lakers, Sixers as well as Bucks and Spurs). My issue with Lebron is I think he has come up small at a fairly high clip in huge moments. Not all the time, but enough times. This past Game 7, I think he had 2 FT's in the final 4.5 minutes. No field goals. Those are the moments Bird generally shown.

Finley's contract is an old bird. 2 years no guarentees money. Early in the process, what they had another two weeks to work on the deal. The Packers have a history of waiting to the last couple of days before a deadline before doing these kind of deals. LambeauBabe (GOLD*) ·
You know Madden - Once he gets started he just can't stop. There are so many factors - tangible and intangible - that contributed to the loss of this game, pointing them out and picking them apart would be frustrating and pointless. If you are one of the people who are content to hang the dead bird around Brett's neck, fine. But then you also have to blame him for the leadership and skill that left us with an amazing season. Besides - Everybody knows the Lambeau crowd was to blame.

Great comparison! Not sure if it is a good one but using Jon Koncack of all people is pure jeenyus. Anyway, who cares. Flacco will be the highest paid QB until the next one is. EDIT: Makes sense now...Koncak was born in Cedar Rapids... Though a reliable defender for much of his career, Koncak is perhaps best remembered for the six-year, US$ 13 million contract he received from the Hawks in 1989 – an unprecedented total for a reserve. The deal was roundly criticized since it paid Koncak more...

I also agree a lot of our running game woes comes from lack of a good OL, or at least parts of it, anyway. I say stick Bulaga in right now, it will at least give Cliffy some time to heal. Give Tausch another game to see how he does, make a switch to Lang if necessary. By the trading deadline, we'll have a better idea of what we have in our current running backs and our offensive tackles. If our running game still stinks with better run blockers, I say make the move for Lynch even if it does...

The numbers don't lie but I doubt anybody thinks the Dirty Birds are in the same stratosphere as the Pokes back in those days. That was a dynasty and they made the Pack their personal whipping boy.
