As much as Hawk wore out his welcome over the years, he was a much better locker room guy than Davis has turned out to be. If I had to pick between the two, I'd take Hawk every time. That pick was never the difference between winning/losing a Super Bowl.

A.J. was indeed a great locker room guy.

It was only when Hawk stepped on the field that his many limitations became so apparent, including when Vernon Davis repeatedly beat him on pass plays down the field when the Pack was losing the last several games to the Niners.

Vernon Davis is/was a head case but he also has 55 career TDs. I'm glad he's not going to be out there tomorrw.

Janis! is taking a bit of stick here on the board and in Packerland, somewhat deservedly. But I confess to being in his corner, much as I am with Abby. Tom Silverstein answered a couple of questions about Janis! during a JSO chat this Thursday which puts where he is in perspective.

Q: GeorgeM, Manassas, VA - Tom, thanks again for your great reporting and amazing work during the game chats! Can you explain what you've seen with Janis? Bob wrote in his game review that Janis didn't look ready. You've seen him in practice and have a better eye for these things than most of us. His measurables seem like he'd be a good fit for the Packers, but something isn't right. Will you tell us what you're seeing?

A: Tom Silverstein - What I see George is someone who is learning what it takes to play in the NFL. He's a small-town kid from a small school who basically just ran as fast as he could and waited for the ball to come to him. He doesn't have the savvy and experience the other WRs have. Montgomery was a very fast learner and played at a major Div. 1 school. It's not surprising he has excelled. Janis has looked much better on special teams and that's where he'll build confidence. I see a guy still learning how to play fast and in control, learning to be physical and to be intuitive. He let a DB ride him out of bounds on his one big opportunity. He's got to see that ahead of time and make sure he stays alive for Rodgers. Those are little things he needs to improve on.

Q: rilee4, Hazelhurst, Wisconsin - Good morning Tom We had a great game vs KC, but can we sustain the dink and dunk against top defenses with an occasional long pass via broken plays/penalty plays the rest of the season? We need someone (Jordy Nelsonish) like Janis to contribute with a few long plays to stretch the field and keep some of the pressure off Cobb and Jones; it would also help our run game. Do you think MM is thinking on those lines?

A: Tom Silverstein - I do agree that they won't be able to live on short passes and free plays forever. They are going to have to stretch the field. I think Montgomery will continue to develop and they'll rely heavily on yards after the catch. But they're going to need Janis to get into the rotation and win some deep balls so they can keep defenses from creeping in and tightening up the passing window.

Q: Garrett Josephson, Shorewood, WI - Janis displays raw, less than game-ready WR skills. Witness his 5-yard penalty vs. KC that showed his ongoing challenge to be part of an offensive set. If he continues to struggle, does TT & MM turn to a newcomer FA or re-sign Myles White (if he's out of the NFL?)?

A: Tom Silverstein - No, I think they'll stick with Janis. The fact he's improving on special teams shows that he has potential as an NFL player. They know he's fast and has receiving skills. They just need to keep dipping his toes in the water and get him acclimated to regular-season football. It's a process.

Well if Abby the Concussed can bring some of his polish with route running and add to the short game I'm curious to see if they try to bust out Montgomery on some longer routes.  I don't think they could ever set up Cobb as a outside guy just because he does so much for the offense as #2.

I'm waiting to see Monty in the backfield à la Cobb. Cobb/Abby in the slots and Monty in the backfield give them a sick short game.  Still waiting for the jet sweep, think MM is waiting to spring that in a big divisional game.

Good. Let them heal up.

@TomSilverstein: Just saw #Packers downgraded S Morgan Burnett (calf) and WR Davante Adams (ankle) to doubtful. This is not a big surprise. Both need time.

Figured Abby would be up on the 53 man roster at some point this season. Happened very quickly. Glad he's here since the WR group could use some help with Adams still hurt

Wonder if Abby immediately takes over PR duties?

Or maybe the playoffs

I wouldn't think so, CAPf. Hyde is doing well enough, and I don't see a need to change status quo.

I like the option of having him available, but if he is going to return, he needs to practice it. No idea if he has been, or even has the time to, assuming coaches haven't been prepping him for that role.

Regardless of his thoughts on race or ethnicity, Micah Hyde is hands down the best punt returner on the roster. Yes, better than Cobb and I'd say Monty too. He's just damn good. I would keep him there unless his role in the secondary increases to such that you don't want to risk him doing PR.

What do you you mean by regardless? It is because of his thoughts on race and ethnicity that he is so spectaculat on punt returns. Former Alabama Gov., George Wallace, was electric on punt returns.

George Wallace.

As a kid growing up soaking up ever damn thing I could about football I fell in love with Bear Bryant.

Bear hated Wallace. He wanted to desegregate Alabama and knew he couldn't. Not in 63, 65, 68. He kept sending black kids he liked to schools up north to coaches he trusted.

In 1970 Bear invited John McKay and his all black USC backfield to Tuscaloosa. USC pounded the **** out of Alabama. Bear knew what he was doing. The next year Bear's two black defensive standouts helped 'Bama beat USC 17-10 in Los Angeles.

"We don't have any black football players. We don't have any white football players. We just have football players".

Paul Bryant.

Wow. Shocker. Deep threat. I like it. It could be cool if Aaron and Abby start making connections. Would love to see Abby have a good career here. Being a super solid route runner will help him. I see this as a BIG Janis demotion. Anyone else see this as more about Janis and less about Adams' injury?

Too bad about Gaston, but he did a decent job in Guion's absence.

I always just find it humorous how many posters here go nuts over ex-Badgers.  They still think Montee Ball and Ron Dayne were misused in the NFL.

I can only imagine what will happen if any team is dumb enough to draft Stave.

Abby up to the 53 is about match-ups. Need 4 and 5 WR sets to get favorable match-ups for Cobb, Jones, Monty. SFO D is a mess and Clements/Rodgers will attack the back-end.

In the simpleton, binary brain of a FIB, anything in Wisconsin would jealously correlate to the success of the Packers.

Stave is whispered in terms of "Messiah".

Dat's just how a Bear brain works.

They think hot dogs are special too...so there you go.

Hate to see a big body with upside depart as well. But what can you do when you only have 53 spots. Highly doubt he'll stay unemployed for long. Minny or NE or CHI seem likely spots.

We, the deprived here in Idaho, will not get the Packer game.  Are there any free streaming links a guy could have?  "I'd gladly to pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!"  Or potatoes!

(trivia points for anyone who can name who that quote comes from!)

Gracias, muchachos!

Got a MacBook Pro & that has made a world of difference in streaming picture quality

It's much better in the regard that you no longer have to install P2P streaming software anymore (Sopcast, TVants, StreamTorrent etc). The picture quality isn't much better, it's just a lot more convenient to use these days.
