I like the kid’s skill set. He’s a guy that has a chance to be a good player down the road.

“I like [that Goodson is raw], because there are not a lot of bad habits that you have to erase. They are what you coach. You’re not coaching anything out of them. I like to take a guy that’s played receiver or has a limited background because if I do my job, he’s going to be a quality player if he has the skill set.” -espn (wilde)

I'm guessing Goodson is being judged more on how far he's developed than how well he's played.  They knew going into it that this wasn't a guy that would be ready right away.  They see enough in his skill set that they don't want to risk losing him.  He's the guy with the jumps and the long arms if I remember correctly.

I'm guessing the like his athletic upside. He may not have posted a ridiculous 40, but I think his basketball probably lends itself well to playing CB. There's a lot of quickness, footwork, and hand-eye coordination involved in basketball and those are things that come in handy for a CB.

The important word in "draft and develop" is the AND. It doesn't mean throw a bunch of
mud against the wall and see what sticks. If teams gave up on players immediately without doing any development then there would be far fewer star players in the league. Draft AND develop, you have to do both. They obviously see something in Goodson, Bradford and Thornton that we don't and they think they are worth the time it takes to develop them. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt right now and that's coming from someone who thought Bradford has been a waste of time.

Sounds like a perfect player for the practice squad.

The only reason to draft someone  is because they have uncoachable characteristics like speed/size/strength.   They may or may not have the other capacities necessary to succeed (health, intelligence, perseverance) but you don't lightly dispose of exceptional talent because you can always find unexceptional talent.

The "Rolle is better than Goodson" argument puts Sam Shields  on the street too. He was all talent and no technique when he became a Packer.

Shields showed enough as a rookie to win the nickel job and I don't quite understand the comparison with Goodson. Regardless, the ability to clear waivers should be a consideration and it's hard to see Goodson not making it to the practice squad given his preseason performance.  Rolle is much more likely to be claimed and if you want to retain both players that would have been the better move to make.

Of course they have their thumb on the scale for their own draft picks, what's the point of drafting a player if you aren't going to try and develop him? Packer fans have been spoiled by seeing a couple draft picks stand out immediately every year. Having to give a draft pick time is closer to reality for most draft picks, especially raw prospects drafted for their potential. If Goodson and Bradford and Thornton all look like absolute crap next training camp then there's definitely an argument to be made that they should be sent packing. A full year learning the scheme and the concepts and developing physically should allow for those players to take the next step.

Agree, but the argument isn't about Bradford and Thorton.  It's about putting Goodson on the Practice Squad for a season where he can spend "A full year learning the scheme and the concepts and developing physically" without taking up a roster spot that could go to someone capable of contributing in a pinch.

I don't think those arguing in favor of Rolle are claiming he is the more talented player.  I think, or they should be, arguing that the roster spot is being wasted.   The risk of losing Goodson to an active roster spot on another team is minimal.  If a team is desperate for a CB, there are probably 100 other guys available who would be a better fit to plug in and play.

The organization always puts its thumb on the scale with its own draft picks, but keeping Goodson over Rolle is beyond ridiculous.

Not like Rolle looks like a future all pro. If they think they can develop Goodson because he has a higher upside, more power to them. No question, Rolle has a higher floor. At the bottom of the roster reach for greatness. Cutting Rolle won't cost us a single game. Why the freak out?
