Updated.  Because of Bulaga's injury, Vince Young's signing and more, a number of notable changes.

QUARTERBACKS (2)

Keep:  Rodgers, Young

Practice Squad (PS):  Coleman

Cut:  Harrell
Comments:  Just love the idea of having a veteran QB like Young -- someone who has started many NFL games, won many of them -- behind Rodgers, and one with inherent physical ability, innate running skills, and just maybe, at 30 years old, mature enough to take advantage of another chance.  Certainly better than Harrell, who is not inherently talented and never started an NFL game.  Not sure that Coleman is even worth developing further on the Practice Squad, but will for now give him one of those coveted spots.  I actually think the Packers will find someone better to develop after final cut-downs.

RUNNING BACKS (5)

Keep:  HBs Lacy (D2), Franklin (D4), Starks, Green, FB Kuhn (30)

PUP:  Harris

Cut:  HB Peace, FB Amosa

Comments:  McCarthy just commented that he still sees Harris as a starting RB.  But since he's been on PUP, is this a smart way to "stash" him for a bit?  In my view, if you can, it allows Kuhn to keep his job.  I still think Kuhn's only advantage is he's still the best pass blocker for Rodgers.  Is that enough to warrant a spot on the 53?  Would like to keep Peace or Amosa, but with 6 backs ahead of them and only 8 Practice Squad spots, can't find one.

WIDE RECEIVERS (5)

Keep:  Cobb, Nelson, Jones, Boykin, Ross

PS:  Johnson (D7A)

Cut:  Dorsey (D7B), Walker, Gillett, White, Hines

Injured Reserve:  Cunningham

Comments:  No change from last time.  Would only keep 6 if compelling -- and so far it's not.  Betting on Ross being the primary kick returner.  Right now, Johnson kept on PS purely on potential.  And yes, while Walker's caught a few passes, I prefer to bet on a draft choice with much better size and speed.

TIGHT ENDS (5)

Keep:  Finley, Quarless, Mulligan, Bostick, Taylor

Cut:  Williams, Stoneburner

Comments:  If keeping Kuhn, maybe they only go with 4 TEs.  Not quite as sure about Quarless anymore, hoping he comes back, gets some playing time.  Mulligan a keeper for the run game.  I think Bostick replaces the incredibly underwhelming Williams.  Taylor stays primarily for Special Teams.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)

Keep:  Bakhitari (D4A), Sitton, Dietrich-Smith, Lang, Barclay, Newhouse, Van Roten, Taylor

PUP:  Sherrod, Tretter (4B)

PS:  Datko

Cut:  Gerhart, Lewis, Hughes

IR:  Bulaga

Comments:  Lots of changes here, starting unfortunately with Bulaga to IR.  Betting Barclay wins RT job, making Newhouse the backup OT on both sides.  Therefore, Van Roten and rookie FA Taylor make it as the backups inside -- Van Roten primarily at C, Lane at G.  Still have hopes for Datko at an OT, so keep him on PS.  Still a chance Sherrod and Tretter can come back and help this year if needed.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Keep:  Jones (D1), Raji, Pickett (33), Daniels, Wilson, Neal, Jolly (30)

PUP:  Worthy

PS:  Boyd (D5B)

Cut:  Pena, Miller

Comments:  No changes.  Still keeping 7 because Neal hybrid DL/OLB.  Trgovac says Jolly getting better every week.  Think there's room for him.  Appears Boyd needs lots of work, so PS seems right for him.  Like Pena's size, potential to be Pickett's possible replacement, but no room for on PS.  Future NT more likely in next year's draft.

LINEBACKERS (9)

Keep:  OLBs Matthews, Perry, Moses, Palmer (D6), ILBs Hawk, Jones, Manning, Lattimore, Francois

PS:  OLB Mulumba, ILB Barrington (7C)

Cut:  OLB Savage, ILB Reed

Comments:  Keeping OLB Palmer right now, but mostly on potential.  Maybe Mulumba makes it and Palmer goes to PS.  Either way, I like keeping both around as developmental pass-rushers.  Manning and Lattimore looking good, coaches quoted as saying Francois having excellent camp.  Need backup LBs for STs.  Found room for Barrington on PS as well.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9)

Keep:  CBs Williams (30), Shields, Heyward, House, Hyde (D5A), Ss Burnett, McMillian, Jennings, Bush

PUP:  S Richardson

PS:  CBs Nixon, Smith

Cut:  CB Means, Ss Fulton, Powell, Banjo

Comments:  Bush still makes it as 9th DB and best ST player.  9 DBs may be slightly light, but reserving 2 slots on PS.  Can never have enough CBs, and both Nixon and Smith have size and speed.  Means has the latter but not the former.  No word yet on Richardson.  But even if cleared, he'll need time to come back, not ready for 53.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Keep:  Tavecchio, Masthay, Goode

Cut:  Crosby

Comments:  Now I'm thinking our placekicker may not even be on the roster, will grab a veteran on final cut-downs.

Agreed with about 70% of what you say, but ...

RB--We are already hearing Green in on the trading block.   Good, he's wasting space.  Keep Pease and get rid of Green.

WR's--Not drinking the kool aid on Boykin and Ross.  What have they done this preseason and this camp?  Not much.  Granted Ross has some returning experience, though it includes fumbles at the end of last year that hurt the team.  I'm very impressed by Walker at WR.  Also impressed by Gillette at WR, and with Jordy having missed many games last year due to injury and not 100% right now, they may keep 6 WR's.

OL--Keep Gerhart.  He's the only one beside EDS who has NFL playing time experience at Center.   "Party on, Garth!"

DL--Is Mike Neal ever going to be able to stay healthy enough to contribute?  I hope so, and I was intriguied about having him play ILB, but just sayin'.....

DB's--Nixon had that nice Pick-6, and may be able to make the squad.

ST--Tavecchio has the clear edge.  But it sounds like they have questions about his leg strength for long field goals.  At the same time, it's sounding like Detroit will be keeping David Akers and cutting Kickalicious.  It may be fitting to get a Norwegian kicker to play in Green Bay and kick on the frozen tundra!!!!

Exactly

Me either. I'm a little worried about our depth here if one of the big guns goes down

I really like this guy. Imagine all the Watergate references we can make during the season

Re: Kickers. Just get someone in here that can make a consistent 40-50 yd FG's. These kickers are driving me crazy

Hard to predict the bottom of the roster now.  Those roster spots are based so much on special teams and I don't think any of us have focused on that aspect of the preseason yet.

Young seems to have the inside track at backup QB, but not because Harrell and Coleman have been so bad.

I don't think Green and Starks both come back.  The two draft picks are guaranteed spots; Kuhn stays for special teams and 3rd downs (until another back becomes as reliable there); and Harris showed too much last year to be cut.

I don't see them keeping 5 TE's.  4 is the max, and only because Taylor is so good on special teams.

Raji, Pickett, Jones, Neal, Daniels and Wilson seem to have the team made already.  I don't see how Jolly or Boyd make the team.  7 DL seems like way too many when considering how many 2 man lines they play.

No idea what happens at LB after the top 6 (starters plus Moses and Manning).  Same with #4-5 WR.  Special teams will weigh heavy in that determination.

OL and DB's seem set, other than order.  Van Roten and Taylor seem to be adequate backups on the inside and the loser of Barclay/Newhouse is adequate on the outside. OL depth is a worry though.  Sherrod will be interesting.  Talent was never a question, but have to wonder what he has left after his horrific injury.  The secondary, barring injury, seems to have the best depth they've had in years.

I don't understand why you put Harris on the PS with Starks and Green looking so average? He did pretty well last year with essentially the same line that Green/Starks played with. That alone, for me, guarantees him a spot. Green will be gone at the first cut down. Starks will stay until Lacy proves he can be the man.

I don't see 5 TEs. Bostick, much like Williams, doesn't have niche. He's an okay receiver and an okay blocker and is okay on STs. He, like Williams, needs to be great at one of those things to make it. I foresee both getting the axe. That 5th TE spot will be used on WR Tyrone Walker IMO.

Also I don't see keeping Palmer over Mulumba. Mulumba has shown a lot more and has stayed healthy. Palmer is headed for the PS and Mulumba will get that spot.

Boy, what's with all the negativity against Alex Green?

RoyalWulff:  "Wasting space...get rid of him"

Boris:  "Exactly"

CUPackFan:  "I don't think Green & Starks both come back"

Grave Digger: "Green will be gone at the first cut down"

WolfPack:  "Cut/trade Green ASAP.  He just hasn't shown that he can be an impact RB in the NFL."

Thompson drafts him in the 3rd round 2 years ago, he looks good in the pre-season, never plays from scrimmage and blows out his ACL on a kickoff.  We learned this off-season that he was never fully recovered last year, then hear from multiple coaches that in training camp he's shown the burst and speed they saw in him coming out of college.  So after one pre-season game where none of the RBs impressed he should be cut?  And what has FA rookie Peace done to warrant everyone wanting to keep him?  Maybe you guys are right.  But I'm not so sure McCarthy and Thompson aren't willing to give Green more of a chance to show why they invested such a high pick in him.

Grave Digger:  Agree on HB Harris -- absolutely see Packers keeping him.  Just wondering if he'll be healthy in time to make 53.  Until he proves to be, I have him on PUP.  On 4 or 5 TEs, you may be right.  I just think either Taylor or Bostick more valuable than WR Tyrone Walker.  Would rather keep a great ST player or a 6-3 250 lb TE that can run vs. a 5-10 WR with average speed.  On Palmer vs. Mulumba, I said I thought we keep both -- one on 53 and the other on PS.  You obviously agree.  I just guessed Palmer on 53 at this early stage, but yes, it may be Mulumba.
