just a thought that flitted by the consciousness last nite....

"we're going to trust the process"
we've all heard and read that one.  I don't think anyone at 1265 would fess up to it but could "the process" actually be:

"the process" is designed to limit injury in today's modern NFL, which means:
- preseason is for rookie and newcomer training and orientation, not for getting the starters ready for regular season
- the season is divided in quarters, the first quarter is their preseason, and while they'd like to win them all they use these four games to get ready for the other 3 quarters.  losses during this time are considered the price of doing business.
- they expect to be as close to undefeated as possible in the last 3 quarters of the season

I hope I'm wrong but it feels close to right...

Sam Shields needs to retire. If he does get cleared to play, he's likely to get another concussion within 2-3 games based on the relatively modest collision that caused this most recent one.

Unfortunately I agree.  With at least 4 concussions in the NFL and another in college it's time to get out while he still can I think.

Yeah, when did Lang get a hip? During the game? Anybody see anything or see him hobbling around? Scary to think he could be out/limited!

Same with Burnett; I'd guess he got hurt in practice this week?

Although the thought having CM3 and Burnett out is just as scary, it's somewhat compensated if Hawkins, Banjo, and Elliott will be available. Peppers can play some more snaps, too.
Guion and Jones are at our thinnest position, and it's amazing how well the DL, as a group, have held up thus far. I think Clark is ready for his challenge whether he starts or rotates in, so that helps. If they can just hang on for another week....

Packers ailing...

Clay Matthews ruled out as Packers downgrade four

The Packers’ defense is ailing heading into Sunday’s game against the Lions.

Green Bay announced today that linebacker Clay Matthews and safety Morgan Burnett have both been ruled out, after previously being listed as doubtful.

The Packers also downgraded two players who were previously listed as questionable — defensive tackle Letroy Guion and linebacker Datone Jones — to doubtful. Players listed as doubtful hardly ever play.

Packers cornerback Sam Shields was already ruled out with a concussion, so Green Bay’s defense is seriously depleted.

Of course, the Lions won’t have any sympathy, as three of their key defensive players are out as well in defensive end Ziggy Ansah and linebackers DeAndre Levy and Antwione Williams.

A lot of new faces tomorrow...

Micah Hyde will play in place of Burnett and in the dime either rookie S Kentrell Price will replace him at safety when he moves to the slot in the dime or rookie CB Josh Hawkins will replace him in the slot and he'll stay at safety in the dime.

Capers doesn't have a lot of options when it comes to replacing Matthews. Normally, he would be able to slide Jones into Matthews' spot and rotate Julius Peppers and rookie Kyler Fackrell in. But with Jones out, Peppers, who has been mostly playing on third downs, will probably have to start and Fackrell will have to log a considerable amount of snaps both in relief of Peppers and in sub packages when Peppers often moves to defensive tackle.

One variable is the return of outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott from a hamstring injury. How much the Packers will be willing to play him there given his importance to special teams isn't known. Elliott may have to save his energy for special teams until he's back in football shape.

First-round pick Kenny Clark probably will start for Guion, who was off to a fast start with three tackles for loss before injuring his MCL in the first quarter of the Vikings game. Guion was hoping to be able to play with a brace on his left knee, but it appears that won't be possible.

Jones was starting at defensive end in the base defense, but now Capers will either have to go with Peppers there or play Christian Ringo at nose tackle and move Clark to defensive end. Also, rookie Brian Price, added to the 53-man roster this week, will have to log some significant snaps.

In the meantime, the Lions are going to be shorthanded on defense as well. In addition to DE Ziggy Ansah being ruled out on Friday, the Lions downgraded CB Adairius Barnes (ankle), LB DeAndre Levy (quad) and LB Antwoine Williams (hamstring) to out.
