November 11th - Edmund Fitzgerald

As a kid, my dad worked at a big grain elevator on Jones Island that loaded ships bound overseas. Come the end of ore shipping season they used to (maybe they still do?) park the ore boats near where he worked. I can remember seeing the Edmund Fitzgerald and other ore boats parked down there for the winter.

I still remember the news coverage shortly after the ship went down showing the wreckage that washed ashore etc. as they looked for survivors.  The thing that sticks with me is an empty life jacket they found that had washed up.  It's hard to imagine such a big ship sinking. Unreal

"At 7:00 P.M. the main hatchway gave in ---he said 'Fellas, it's been good to know ya."

Haunting song. Heard it 1000 times and always feel the sadness.

Agreed.   Great and haunting song.  What a hellish way to die.

Also the anniversary of the 1940 Armistice Day Blizzard.
