This plays right in with the 'pay college athletes' debate, and the 'thug' perceptions in most sports today, professional or amateur. It shows the depths of corruption within sports programs at universities; this isn't the first time an institution shows little to no regard for a child's life. Hell, it isn't even the first one at this university!

Unfortunately, it also shows the 'good ol' boys' mentality exists as much as ever, and victims face an uphill battle if they seek justice.

The scariest bit of info in that article: their former president going to Penn State! Jesus H Christ on a cracker! WTH is wrong with those people?

RNYF, I think a lot of these problems happen when a person puts themselves in unfavorable situations. If she's smart, she should be fine.

It's a crying shame kids can't go to school today without fear of crime. Georgia Tech is a prime example; armed robberies are as common as breathing, and Atlanta PD is either unable or unwilling to deal with it.

When enough 1-800 lawyers find a way to sucessfully sue colleges and universities for damages, ....

It is big business. Just like Meyers at U of Florida with Hernandez, they will bring anyone on board who will help them win & don't really want to know what they are doing off the field. They take the easiest majors with all the tutors and help they can get....and they only have to pass two classes (with D's) in the first semester to remain eligible. Because the college has to make such great concessions to the player as opposed to the typical student, the players feel even more privileged, which increases their thuggish behavior.

Penn State was on a different level of ugliness but the story about Winston and F$U is also troubling.   Am I surprised?   Not one bit.   You've got to protect the golden goose (college football and the revenue it generates) and some schools will go through extreme measures to do so even if actions are illegal or unethical.

If possible, send her to a D3 school. Some great liberal arts schools as well as some state schools fit the bill.

The best coaching happens at that level too (like Bo Ryan at UW-Platteville).

I think you are correct, PointBrew.  But I don't think the "new" part is the other yound woman who told the police about Winston at an earlier conquest wasn't mentioned by the police.  Now, that only makes more incompetent and might open up the university to a lawsuit if the campus police were in on it, too.

Also, by bringing it up now, they can deal with it and get it out of the way before the season starts in Fall.  So, when new allegations come up, the university can say, "that's old news and there was an investigation done and it proved his innocence", etc,

Jameis don't seem to be getting it.

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was issued a citation Tuesday for shoplifting crab legs from Publix, according to multiple sources. Winston, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is a red-shirt sophomore for the Seminoles.

"He got an adult civil citation," a trusted source inside Tallahassee Police told Tomahawk Nation. "If he completes the sanctions it will never show up on his record. They commonly give them to juveniles on first criminal offenses. They are now doing it for minor misdemeanors for adults to lower crime rate."

Winston tossed the winning touchdown in the National Championship game over Auburn in the closing seconds. On the year, he was 257-384 for 4087 yards and 40 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

Winston has had previous run-ins with the law, but no arrests. He was investigated for an alleged rape, but the State Attorney declined to bring charges due to a lack of evidence. In November, the associated press reported that Winston was questioned about his involvement in a long-running BB gun battle, and that a Burger King reported Winston was stealing soda in a ketchup cup.

The timing of the citation is interesting given that the NCAA recently approved unlimited meals for student athletes.

Winston was recently voted the quarterback on the Florida State All-Jimbo Fisher team.

11:30 Update: A source inside Florida State's program says that Winston will be fined $30, required to do community service, and will be suspended from the baseball team.

11:35 Update: The Leon County Sheriff's Office will hold a 2 p.m. press conference concerning Jameis Winston.

I was in Publix yesterday and saw the crab legs. Someone had to bag them up and hand them to him and put a price sticker on them. How he gets a load of those things and walks out while thinking he did not pay is nuts.

Anybody else would have been arrested. No Citation. You go straight to jail. But the anointed one gets another pass. Amazing!!!

I want to laugh at Winton, but honestly, I am really absent minded. I bought lumber ones and thought I had paid for it. Fortunately, Menards require a receipt before you can take them out.

It sounds like the crab was the only thing Winston had gotten at the store. Now, I've walked off and forgotten my change, but walk off with a smelly bag of crab legs (if fresh) and the fact that it was the only thing he had? Doubtful story, at best. And the punishment? Heck, his fine ($30) doesn't even cover the cost of the crab legs ($32.72), and his community service will probably be something like "talking to youth" rather than picking garbage up off the highway.

WTF are you talking about?

WTF are you talking about?  I have seen sheriff cars outside Publix many times arresting people that were shoplifting. They take them to jail. I don't know what ultimately comes of it but they do go to jail. But if you are the star QB, they write you a ticket and send you on your way.  Anyone else goes before a judge.
