you know, this is all crazy in tt's world.  we have spent so much time, looking at guys, what I do know is likely will be nobody that any mock draft has slated.  he will never draft a lb in the first (lol, cm3 is never happening again).  never draft a rb in the first.  never draft a te in the first.  he will take a ol or dl, someone you never heard of or that the draftniks show going in the 3rd or 4th.

Pre-Combine Mock/Guys to watch at Combine:

Round 1

Takkarist McKinley/OLB/UCLA

6’2”/258 lbs.

*Very athletic edge rusher with a very high ceiling. Already experienced as 34 OLB with high production.

Round 2

Budda Baker/FS/Washington

5’11”/190 lbs.

*Versatile and aggressive FS with flexibility to play Nickel and Dime Back

Round 3

Zay Jones/WR/East Carolina

6’2”/200 lbs.

*Prolific pass catcher (NCAA #1 all time in receptions) with a polished game

Round 4

Damontae Kazee/CB/San Diego St.

5’11”/185 lbs.

*Quick, smart Nickel Back with a nose for the ball

Round 5

Jamaal Williams/RB/BYU

6’/200 lbs.

*Tall, strong and versatile runner who has drawn Matt Forte comparisons

Round 5 (Compensatory Pick)

Kyle Kalis/OL/Michigan

6’4”/310 lbs.

*Good size, sound technique with the nasty attitude you want from OL

Round 6

Joey Ivie/DT/Florida

6’3”/300 lbs.

*High effort, highly aggressive grinder who will work well in a rotation

Round 7

Brandon Facyson/CB/Virginia Tech

6’2”/200 lbs.

*Talented, aggressive man cover corner who has struggled with injuries

Rounds 1-4 would be a dream draft. Takk McKinley is going to be a player. I think McKinley is going up everyone's board after the combine though. Freak athlete.

The problem with McKinley, IMO, is that he's not a complete player right now. He's an athletic edge rusher, but he's not a polished edge rusher and he's definitely not a polished run defender. His potential is very high, but he doesn't have the body of work that Derek Barnett has, he doesn't show the versatility that Solomon Thomas has, and he doesn't show the polished pass rush skills that Charles Harris does.

Honestly though, if he does rise then all that does is push a different pass rusher our way. Derek Barnett or Charles Harris or Taco Charlton would all be great picks. They're each very different, but all would be good picks in the long run.

Best attribute for Takk is that he never stops. He's raw. He relies way too much on his ability. But the guy is relentless. You stop him he'll figure out a way around it. He's probably flash and fail as a rookie but he doesn't stop going.

Just to make it easy....All Packer picks below. Remember, Comp picks can be traded this year

  • Round 1, pick 29: #29 overall
  • Round 2, pick 29: #61 overall
  • Round 3, pick 29: #93 overall
  • Round 4, pick 28*: #134 overall
  • Round 5, pick 29: #174 overall
  • Round 5, pick 39 (compensatory): #184 overall
  • Round 6, pick 29: #214 overall
  • Round 7: #249 overall

Just curious...why do the 'gaps' between picks become much wider after the 3rd round? Are there that many compensatory picks at the end of the 3rd?

I believe there were 11 3rd round picks this year.

Thanks Packerjoe.  As a fan who really doesn't know squat about player evaluation, I appreciate your takes on the draft.  A few questions:

-Is Tim Williams dropping b/c of off-field issues, or because of holes in his game?  I swear he was a top 10 pick right after the national championship game.  Same with Mixon, do you see him as a legit third, or is that only based on talent (and ignoring off field).

-Is Jake Butt a third rounder b/c of the injury?  I remember seeing him late first / early second before the injury, so curious if the drop is solely injury related, or if it has something to do with his game and/or other TEs jumping over him.

-Do you really see Tribusky as worthy of a mid first round pick?  I checked NFL starting QBs with 1 year starting in college and it's not pretty: Osweiler and Cam Newton.  Cam worked out and Osweiler is terrible, but that's still just 2 starters in the NFL that started 1 year in college.  Is Tribusky that special that he can buck the trend?

This kid's hands...like budda!

As long as they don't draft this guy.  Nobody wants a dead, slow white guy on their team.

Tim Williams.  He had an unregistered firearm arrest a few months back and rumors are that he really likes smoking pot and could turn out to be the next Randy Gregory.  There are also questions about his size.  Most draft websites list him as being 250+ pounds but lots of people don't think he was playing at that weight.  Alabama's website lists his weight as 252 pounds on the 2016 roster, but only 237 pounds on the 2015 roster.  Thompson seems to avoid players with character issues.  My gut feeling is he won't take Williams even if he were to slip all the way down to the Packer's second round pick.

Jake Butt.  All injury-related.  Tore an ACL in the bowl game.  If the injury doesn't happen he's the second or third tight end off the board depending on how much Njoku wows during workouts, which he is expected to do.  Butt may or may not have been a first round pick, would have all depended on if team's picking at the end of the round are looking for tight ends.

Mitch Trubisky.  Every time I've seen quotes from scouts talking about this year's quarterback class from credible NFL Draft reporters it's the same thing.  This draft is terrible for quarterbacks and there isn't one worth taking in the first round.  I think at least one will go within the top 10 because NFL front offices are just not logical at all when it comes to that position.  Trubisky is the one guy that all the draftniks are watching during the combine measurements.  Listed at 6-3, reports are that he may be under 6-2.

Your board or consensus board?

Unadjusted consensus board.  I might make some adjustments to the consensus board closer to the draft if I can tell there are obvious f**k-up's from the draftniks/writers like with James Bradberry last year.
