Anyone else think we should ditch the punter all together and just teach Rodgers to punt? That's much more useful than a wasted spot on Joke Schlub.

He would not trust the snapper or the gunners......it takes time to develop trust.

So far, yet another bad move by Ted on the punter position. He's made some great picks at other positions, but he's screwed up with many a punter. Jon Ryan is still laughing. As he should be.

In all seriousness I think it was probably a lateral move in terms of punt quality, but saved the team a little bit of money (500K). Ted pays proportionately to production and Masthay simply wasn't justifying his salary. His cap hit was only 1 mil each of the last two seasons, which is not excessive for a Punter, but it's far above a lot of better Punters in the league. I guess the theory is that if the Punting is going to suck then it might as well suck at a lower cost!

I've seen some college programs that have a punt formation with the QB and it seems to work out pretty well. The QB just does a little rugby pooch kick and it takes a favorable bounce. Rodgers could do it provided he doesn't break his foot!

It's been almost 10 years, but I remember thinking after the Chicago road loss in 2007 that Jon Ryan had the worst game by a punter I had ever seen.  I thought that game was the beginning of the end for him in Green Bay.  Everyone focused on Favre having a bad day that day which was accurate, but Ryan was the #1 reason the Pack lost that game.  Holy cow were he and the Packers' special teams awful that day.

I like the way you think.

We need to get Geronimo on the active roster.

McStupidface needs to start running a 5 guard offense.

For the most par, punters make very little difference. Sure, you'd like to see a 50 yard punt rather than a 35 yard one, but there is very little difference between the best punters and an average one (see below - about 2 points a season). From my perspective, as long as he holds for FGs and PATs without a glitch he'll be fine. That's much more important.

What should be striking here is that Morstead has only been able to add 11.03 points over four seasons and most of the 2013 season, equivalent to 2.32 points over average each season. For comparison, the average NFL team scores 371.85 points a season. Football Outsiders estimates that in 2013, Peyton Manning was able to contribute 2,475 yards above average at quarterback, which is worth approximately 160.6 expected points above average.

It is also worth noting that NFL teams currently have a difficult time evaluating and paying punting talent appropriately. For example, the highest paid punter for the 2014 season is Mike Scifres of the San Diego Chargers who is earning $3.25 million this year (corresponding to a $4 million cap hit) but producing results below the league average. Even if teams starting evaluating punters correctly, the marginal benefit a team could expect from signing a top punter is not worth nearly the current market cost.

Maybe they're not contributing points, but I'd like to see some starting field position stats. Seems like MIN had great field position because Schum couldn't boot it past the MIN 40. He's not placing them inside the 20, so our D is constantly in bad spots field position wise.

If Pro Bowls were given for fair catching, Micah Hyde would be 1st team All-Pro. It'd be nice if we could run forward once in a while.

Before each punt I'd like Micah to close his eyes and image this is what's coming to tackle him.

Problem solved.

The last great punter we had was Craig Hentrich. He seemingly always got us out of trouble and pinned the opposing team inside their 20, more often than not. It was a mistake to let him go.  The last kid in college that could kick like him was from Texas A&M and got drafted this past draft. Do we need to use the draft to get a capable punter or will FA be the route to take?
