PERSONALLY, I think it's GREAT that Daniels is speaking up and trying to motivate histeammates  and hold them accountable.  I think great teams need those guys.  In fact, I'm disappointed we don't have more like that.   Woodson was a leader when he had to be, even if it didn't fit his personality.   Reggie was a leader.

How about some of the other "older" players on defense?   Like Peppers, Hawk, Clay, and Tramon?   I'd like to see one or more of them help Daniels provide leadership and motivation on the field.   Who do you see as a likely leader on Defense?

Daniels had the second most sacks on the defense last year.  I'd say he has lead with his play.  If he's going to talk this much he'll have to back it up and he seems like the kind of guy with the mindset to do that.

There's eighteen players left from the Superbowl team.  The only guy on the D line left is BJ Raji.  If anyone needs a kick in the ass, it's him. Raji hasn't had a sack in two years and has been mediocre for long stretches.

I can see the point that Daniels is going to piss off some of his team mates if he takes it too far.  At the same time the defense hasn't held themselves accountable since the Superbowl, imo.  Clay isn't a vocal leader, neither is Hawk, or Burnett.  If Daniels can get the D line going good for him.

Hope BJ's back to being more impactful at NT than he was at DE. He is built to use his quickness and huge butt ( leverage) in tight quarters vs centers and guards.

Outside, he has shorter arms than the OTs and doesn't have enough counter moves -  so they easily controlled him. Longer guys do better outside...

Look at the LOS and the OL is an inverted V with the center tight over the ball, the guards a 1/3 yard back and the OTs another 1/2 yard back from there

On the outside vs athletic OTs, the shorter armed big- asssed Raji is at a huge disadvantage. He's relatively far away from his combatant and they can get their hands on him before he can get his on them.

Up close and battling the less athletic centers/guards, it pushes the pendulum back in favor of his low center of gravity and quick first step. Sure hope it works as well as it did in 2010, but he's getting older...

Took my boys up to TC this morning. We were right by the DL during their drills. Datone and Daniels are the most imppressive guys up close. Thornton alson got a lot of praise from Trgovac during the drills.

And, Trgo could ease up on the "mother f'r" bombs in front of my kids, too, if it's not too much to ask.

Packers hoping for Raji rebound

Weston Hodkiewicz, Press-Gazette

8:12 p.m. EDT July 27, 2014

Raji said he spoke to four or five teams, but returned to Green Bay with the understanding he'd slide back to nose tackle in defensive coordinator Dom Capers' 3-4 defense.

The changes might not stop there, though. The defense's frequent use of the nickel and dime subpackages could lead to Capers lessening his grip on the traditional two-gap scheme in which the defensive linemen are responsible for gaps on either side of them to free up linebackers in pursuit.

"We have more of an aggressive mentality," Raji said. "In the past we kind of played the traditional read-and-react defense, similar to what Pittsburgh continues to run. So we tweaked that a little bit so we can use our gifts as far as attacking the line of scrimmage."

Whether that means Raji will be used more on passing downs like he was during a 6Â― sack-season in 2010 remains to be seen, but the Packers would like to get more out of him than last season.

Raji played in all 16 games, but also struggled during the final stretch. Pro Football Focus ranked him near the bottom half of qualifying 3-4 defensive ends in run-stop percentage (12 stops on 312 snaps). continue

We better hope Raji is bringing it this year.  Can't have him dogging it at the NT.  DL is a big unknown right now, imo.

Always good to have JC close by. #knowwhatimsayin?

Johnny Carson, Jimmy Carter, James Caan?  All good choices.

Jesus Christ?

STFU and lead by your play!!!!!

He'd also be wise to remember the bulk of his team mates went through a season with 15 guys on the IR to win a ****ing Super Bowl without him.

And if he thinks a guy isn't working to his potential. Pull him aside and talk to him and tell him you need him. Don't talk like a badass to the media.

Disagree.  I want a mouthy, fiery, ****-talking asshole on that defense.  Go get 'em Daniels!

Fair comment on BJ's motor and he has to know this is his last audition in GB

His 1 year "prove it" contract this season should tell him all he needs to know.

Time to step up & get into Haloti Ngata or Vince Wilfork territory if he wants to get paid.

A first thus far in camp: Packers go dime and have Hyde, Burnett and Clinton-Dix on field simultaneously. Tramon, Shields, House other DBs.

I always forget about House.  Man, GB is deep at DB.  If they all stay healthy, I'd imagine we'll be seeing a lot more Hayward than House.

Yet somehow by the end of TC our deepest and most competitive positions get decimated by injuries.  Whoever survives to opening day roster will see lots of action.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media after Monday's first padded practice. Here are some highlights of his news conference:

On the first padded practice:

"Similar to past years. I thought energy was good. The structure of the practice was solid. It's not totally coordinated. That's why we spend so much time working on footwork. We're installing. Today we had third down. I thought the pressure periods were challenging on both sides. Good quality film to learn. Not ready to play a game."

On injured guard T.J. Lang:

"As far as T.J. and Josh (Sitton), we're going to make sure we get more reps with other individuals. I'm not worried about T.J."

On the tight ends:

"We're really getting started. Today's practice with the pads, the tight end position is challenging. The half-line work will be very important for that group."

On his No. 1 concern in camp:

"I don't really have any concerns. This is a time to grow. We hit our targets in the offseason. You have to flush out OTA mindset. My focus is getting better each and every day. That's my job. I try to stay on top of that and make sure direction is always moving forward."

On defensive end Datone Jones getting into it with offensive lineman Don Barclay:

"It's football. That's all it is. Part of the game."

On wide receiver Jarrett Boykin's chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers:

"I know Aaron feels really good about that connection."

On defensive tackle Mike Daniels' being vocal:

"I like everything about Mike Daniels. I like the way he goes about his business. I like his personality. I like how he expresses himself. He has a great approach and definitely tried to take that next step."

On linebacker Julius Peppers dropping into coverage:

"Their fire-zone scheme, he had same responsibility as a defensive end. He's very athletic. I'm not surprised with the way he's played in space has been impressive. When a man of his range, that's a different throw for a quarterback. He's here to go toward the quarterback, but when he does drop, he definitely has great ability and range. You look at his ball skills. He handles the football like an offensive player."

On new performance nutrition specialist Adam Korzun:

"It's an ongoing focus to grow and get better. This was part of the new facilities. The coordination between the cafeteria, weight room and the training room. He's already made an impact with the team. He started this week."
