Limited to 87 snaps a year ago, Hayward is doing everything in his power to prevent a repeat nightmare.

To finely tune his hamstrings, the cornerback underwent "dry needling" over the off-season. Similar to acupuncture, dry needling helps release scar tissue within the muscle.

So for six sessions in Atlanta — and Hayward will continue this in Green Bay — Hayward kept his face down and braced for the "little pokes" along the hamstring.

Each time, the 24-year-old feels a palpable release. Dry needling targets trigger points of pain, of tightness and keeps his hamstring loose.

Hayward isn't into yoga, even though that's precisely what has helped players such as Jarrett Bush combat hamstring issues. He is, however, stretching more, getting deep tissue massages once (and sometimes twice) a week and paying more attention to his glutes and hamstrings in the weight room. That means more lunges and isolated leg curls.

In the past, Hayward did leg lifts but wouldn't zero in on his hamstrings.

That might have been one reason Hayward's hamstring gave out in training before last year's camp, again in a preseason game Aug. 23 against Seattle and then again Nov. 10 against Philadelphia.

"I definitely see the difference. I'm able to open up," Hayward said. "The crazy thing about it is, I don't feel like I've ever had to run 100% yet, because I try to put myself in good positions where I don't have to. If anybody ever has to run 100%, they're in trouble. You're chasing if you have to run 100%." -jsonline (dunne)

From MM:

@BrianCarriveau

MM on Morgan Burnett: I was told he tweaked his ankle so we held him out.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on two-minute drill: It was very good. ... Just the communication, the setup, I thought Aaron, the quarterback, was exceptional.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on Davon House: He's clearly having his best year as a pro, some of the things you saw he did in the offseason.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on House: I wouldn't say Davon was held back, it's just his progression of growth. ... He does some great things on special teams.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on Eddie Lacy: I wouldn't say we're putting more on his plate, he's just improving at all the little things.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on Lacy: Pass protection, he's much better ... I just think you're seeing the growth of him in all aspects of his game.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on DuJuan Harris: You train all RBs to be a three-down players.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on training camp: I thought this was a good redzone day today. The short-yardage, we'll have some good video. Distractions are coming.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on B.J. Raji: He's in great shape. I know our training camp was very pleased with how he came in and his weight.

@BrianCarriveau

MM: If you ever want to get a center ready, B.J. and Josh Boyd are your guys.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on J.C. Tretter: He needs every rep. I can't tell you if there's someone in the locker room that's prepared himself as much as he has.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on Brandon Bostick: He's bigger, stronger. He needs to stay healthy. We've always been excited about his progress.

@BrianCarriveau

MM on Jeff Janis: Jeff's situation is a little different. I couldn't explain it, but I think he'll be back sooner than later.

That's it from MM

FWIW, Paul Imig from Fox Sports WI was on WSSP today and said BJ Raji was "absolutely destroying" JC Tretter and Linsley at the line. It's not even a competition.

Said what he's done in TC is a 180 from what he's been the last 3 seasons. He's back to his 2010 form. While that's very good news for Raji, Imig said it may be raising red flags as to how the 2 centers are doing so far in camp.

Interview is here:

Raji vs C at about the 6 min mark.

Yep. And Raji should be beating Centers, he's built to do exactly that with his quick feet and big asss. He's penetrating instead of playing 2- gap patty cake

From presser:

MM on Raji: "B.J. reported in great shape. I know the trainers were happy.

If you want to get a center ready, B.J.'s your guy."

Boyd looked good at times late last season.

Ketchman had some comments regarding this a couple days ago and pointed out that the drills they were running had both players playing more in space than in actual alignment where they are in close quarters.  He said he liked what he saw out of Tretter so far.  Don't know the context for today though.

Raji vs C at about the 6 min mark.

Hanging a couple of new centers out to dry ...1 on 1 against the new and improved Raji prolly isn't the fairest test at the moment.

I'm more relieved that Raji looks like "twinkle toes" again, than worried just yet that we can't whip one of these dudes into a passing grade at center.

My notes from today's practice (keep in mind I can't see every drill):

*The "no names" to watch: RB Michael Hill, S Charles Clay, RB Rajion Neal, RB LaDarius Perkins, ILB Joe Thomas, T Aaron Adams, DE Luther Robinson. Don't be surprised if any or multiple of those guys are roster surprises.

*The practice squad RB spot is actually a good competition. Rajion Neal, Ladarious Perkins, and Michael Hill all have shown good things at various times. Perkins has a ton of quickness and speed, but he's really small. Neal doesn't have the second gear, but he is quick, he gives a lot of effort, and they're moving him around a lot. Hill is a good downhill runner. That will be an interesting one to see shake out.

*Saw Rich Rodgers almost exclusively with the 1's. He was in-line and split out, didn't see him block though. Quarless and Bostick rotated in and Bostick had a nice day catching the ball.

*Although the reporters seem to be reporting only Tretters poor plays, I saw him school Mike Daniels and Datone Jones today. That's a positive for Tretter because Daniels has been giving everyone fits.

*Lane Taylor has cemented a back up Guard spot, he has had a good camp.

*This Aaron Adams has been getting the reps as the #2 RT and hasn't embarrassed himself.

*Sherrod had some problems with the speed on the outside, didn't think he had a good day.

*WR Gillet caught everything thrown at him. He's a good sized guy with great hands, but he's painfully slow. It's quite obvious he's a step slower than everyone else. It's a shame because he could be a solid WR. Actually I thought if he was 3" taller he would make a good TE because he's already close to 220 I think.

*I think Abby has pulled away from guys like Chris Harper and Kevin Dorsey as a receiver. Harper especially had a bad day. Dorsey isnt getting the reps with good QBs like Abby and Myles White are.

*Dorsey has raw athleticism though, he glides.

*Datone seemed to have a rough day, not sure what was wrong, he lost some easy battles though.

*Daniels is way more vocal, he hoops and hollers on every play and gets after guys. I like his intensity.

*Mike Neal had a strong debut, he looks more athletic than ever. He showed some good edge speed.

*Barrington looked much better than last year. He's a more athletic DJ Smith I think.

*Saw a lot of 4+ LB sets either with 3 OLBs and 2 ILBs or the opposite. Clay is kind of the roving OLB while Lattimore is the rover with the second team D.

*Palmer has been the primary back up with Perry out.

*Goodson had a couple good break ups today, he seems to have some instincts and definitely has the athleticism.

*It was Hyde and Dix primarily with Burnett out, but they rotated the Safeties a lot. I think they're trying to find the best combo of guys.

*In case anyone was wondering how it was shaking out with Kevin Greene gone, it's Moss coaching the OLBs and McCurley coaching the ILBs, not the other way around.

*Also Ron Zook is a very different coaching from Chad Morton. Morton was not very animated and not very active, Zook is very active. He is all over the field in ST drills.

That's all I have for today!
