Hmmm.

Packers linebacker Mike Neal had offseason hernia surgery, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in an article published on Wednesday, the eve of the first day of training camp in Green Bay.

Details were not provided in an article that was part of a larger Packers linebackers preview, but it would explain why Neal was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list earlier in the day. Neal cannot take part in practice until being taken off the PUP list.

Unless he took part in practices not open to the public, Neal appeared to have missed the entirety of the Packers offseason program in the months of May and June as well.

After three injury-prone seasons to start his career, Neal has stayed largely healthy the past two seasons, playing in all 16 games in each of the past two years.

Those McGinn articles don't give you the warmest of fuzzies.  Still good though.

According to The Fan it sounds like Abbrederis may have left with an injury.

Abbrederis went off with a trainer.

Jayme Snowden: Quarless's girlfriend was deep into her pregnancy, their third child I believe. Really hope everything is okay on that front. "extremely difficult" gives you pause.

You're going to be hearing the name LaDarius Gunter. Picking up where he left off over the offseason, Gunter popped in drill work, catching your eye with his explosiveness and fluidity, and then made the first interception of camp when he picked off a fade Jared Abbrederis from Aaron Rodgers. Don't put him in Canton yet, but the kid certainly took advantage of Quinten Rollins' absence today.

Packers Training Camp Day 1. 2nd round pick #24 Quinton Rollins begins camp with a hamstring injury. UFA #36 Ladarius Gunter took advantage of his opportunity. He lined up at right CB vs. Jared Abbrederis. Aaron Rodgers sent Abbrederis 25 yards down the left sideline. Gunter using his height reached up and picked Rodgers off. Abbrederis later left practice early with an injury. First team defense had Sam Shields in Tramon Williams old spot at left corner, 1st round pick Damarious Randall rotating in with veteran Casey Hayward at right cornerback - MIKE CLEMENS— at Ray Nitschke Field.

I think I'm changing my dark horse camp star to Gunter.

If he can't stay on the field, it is going to help the coaches and TT make WR decisions. 

That is easy.  Khyri Thornton is the guy - it happened last year. 

Thornton's 3rd round status saved him for a year.  Sounds like he was so bad he's landed in Brohm territory as far as making the roster.

Packers have (2) extra roster spots on the DL due to suspensions, so he may get a temporary stay of execution.

It's a smoke screen.  When the season opens, Matthews will be lining up at Tight End.
