With the old PAT rule, to set up the 20-yard attempt, the holder would catch the snap and place it on the 10-yard line.

“If you kicked it straight off that line, perpendicular, it goes through the uprights,” Carney said.

Officials continue to spot the ball at midfield for the longer PAT unless someone from the kicking unit — the long snapper, holder or kicker — asks to shift left or right to one of the hash marks, like they would align for a field goal.
