One thing I do wonder is how TT viewed PJ Williams from Florida State. He's bigger than Randall with more experience playing outside on an island as well as a hybrid skill set. The DWI a week before the draft couldn't have helped, especially if there were any more potential FSU questions about him.

Interesting take on both Randall and Rollins and it talks about the need for the players in the secondary to be more interchangeable. As offenses go faster and faster and keep defenses from subbing- you need "mirrors" on the back end who can do it all

...the offense can roll out any pattern combinations on either the left or right side of the formation, so the defensive backs on both sides of the field must be able to rotate and cover inside, outside, short, and deep. Flip the pictures above around in mirror images, and the safeties must be able cover the same routes on either side.

Pat Kirwin talks about this same thing in his book "Keep your eye off the ball". Makes your defense much more diversified, & the offense less likely to predict what you are doing if you don't have to sub packages as much.

Gotta tell ya, I'm actually really intrigued by this draft.  In a cute way.

Seriously, these additions along with the fix put in place midseason for the perennial highway project issue could really kick this defense to a consistent, if respectable level.

Green Bay may be the only place where the defense starts in the backfield.

That's the bleeding edge of football strategery...as the game becomes basketball on grass.... the Packers are grabbing basketball players.

Guys who know how to cover without "fouling"

It just gives me goosebumps

This will be interesting.  Dribbling a football?  Getting called for traveling en-route to the end zone.  etc. ........  Can't wait.

PJ Williams allowed a QB rating of 100 on all the passes thrown his way. Not good. https://www.profootballfocus.c...iew-cb-buyer-beware/

I know.  I was a fan, wanted Ted to take him early on, but the more I researched him, the more I wanted Ted to stay away.

Oddly enough, I met PFF's top "Buyer Beware" candidate, Trae Waynes, two days after the draft. No way is he 6-1. No way. MIN got ripped off. He will completely suck. Guaranteed.

Thanks for the article, Satori, and I couldn't agree more. I'm so stoked for our overall defense and team speed in coverage, not to mention, ass kicking hitting and tackling by both Randall and Rollins.

Now, add to that some insane ball hawking, added to a bunch of other ball hawks in Burnett, Clinton-Dix, Hayward, Shields and Hyde, and this 2015 season and secondary could be going to be on par with our best Woodson years. I do believe this to be true. Might take a bunch of games before they get dialed in, but when they do, this will be fun to watch! Especially with an improved pass rush, which I think we will have this year. That makes any secondary better.

Glad to see Randall signed and all in!

The Packers blitzed a lot last year- more than in previous seasons and more than most other teams at a 37 % rate .

https://www.profootballfocus.c...stats-team-blitzing/

They also finished top ten in opponent passer rating, sack percentage and sacks per game. Given that the GB offense will continue to light up the scoreboard, Packers defense will face a lot of passing again

If you are going to be blitz-heavy, then you need corners & safeties who can cover man-to-man and have ball-hawking skills.

Both Randall and Rollins fit that description... and so do Hayward and Shields

Anybody notice the number 1 draft choice kickin some butt in his 1st NFL game ?

Because of Burnett's injury, they shuffled some DBs around and Randall ended up starting outside...and had a heck of a game. Pretty impressive debut

Kind of a Swiss Army Knife DB. The guy can do it all. Very, very athletic. Good instincts for the game, and solid reaction to break up plays. I was glad to see him perform well v. CHI.

As you said, first game out, not too bad. Got a little handsy, but apparently Whitt is drilling that carefully as to what they can and can't get away with within the rules. I think he really was drafted to take that Woodson spot in the D. He is a good cover man. Will take some lumps as we progress, but he will learn from them. And he will make picks.

I was wondering that too when they drafted him.  Only thing I don't know at this point is if he has the football IQ to do it.  Woodsen was supremely talented but he had the brains to match, which is really what separated him.

It seems like CM is starting to take on some of that joker roll within the frame of the LB's but he can only do that up to the second level of the D whereas Wood could really effect all 3 levels from almost anywhere on the field.  Should be fun to watch DR develop.

Yup, I mentioned it in the +/- thread

DB's isn't this teams problem. Inside LB'er & inside Pass Rush is.

Hopefully Clay having to lineup the D will help put the Wizard at ease Sunday Night

Do you have any idea the magnitude of that statement ? In a passing league where teams spend draft pick after draft pick trying to find corners ?

Randall stepped up. IF he can continue his ascent, then Hayward goes back to playing inside where he has already shown elite skills. WOW

Not to mention the additional talent added to our roster and PS in Rollins, Gunter and Robertson Daniels. 4 very good DBs, with great ball skills. That, added to Demetri Goodson from last season, and he is an improved player over last year by quite a bit. Remarkable swing in depth at the position for GB that will figure in prominently for years.

Amazing in today's game. I watched Randall a lot at ASU. He will be a very special player for us. Size. Speed. Range. Ability to hit and tackle. Great instincts. Should be super fun to see more this season.

It won't be long before we see this kid start opposite Shields. He has played very well in limited opportunities, and Hayward seems to be struggling to keep up. I wonder how long before we see Rollins and Gunter as well...
