A lot of money will open up by releasing Sam Shields and in all probability, Julius Peppers either retiring or moving on from GB. There is also a possibility Randall Cobb and CMIII will be asked to restructure as they have large cap numbers.

The 3 signings I would make would be:

TJ Lang, Cook, and the swiss army knife (33). We've seen how desperately needed a veteran CB/S/DB is needed and the Packers offense is just on another level with a quality TE. Lang's injury history is concerning but I think you could front load a 3 year deal that is essentially a 1 year deal with most guaranteed money up front.

Nick Perry would be another good signing but his injury history has to be at least somewhat of a concern. But when healthy, he's eclipsed CMIII as the most productive OLB.

I guess Elliot and Brian are still interested in the 49ers GM job.  They are meeting with Kyle S.  to see if they can stand him or not.  If I were a candidate, I would tell them that the GM should hire the coach.  Therefore, I am no longer interested.  If York makes the HC decision, what else will try shoving down your throat once you are hired as the GM.

I can't agree with this.  The opportunity to be a GM doesn't come around often, so if the opportunity is there, you take it.  And, the new GM already has a built in excuse if Shanahan doesn't work out.  "I didn't pick the coach the first go-round.  Give me a chance to find the HC and if that doesn't work, you can fire me."

Each team's rollover amount was just announced, with GB at about $8M. Over the Cap shows the team with $36M in space which I do not believe includes the rollover. Assuming Shields is not back and frees up $9M, my unofficial estimate has the team at $53M in space. That should be enough to bring back most of the expiring contracts, though Perry could see some silly offers coming off a double digit sack season.

Regarding the mess going on in SF. It started with two guys Jed really wanted as GM. Both diplomatically told Jed to eff off. So Jed did Jed like things and started selling this as getting a coach and GM together. Only a bunch of potential coaching targets started telling Jed to eff off too. Now he's got people he hasn't hired interviewing people he hasn't hired. It's a full blown clown show. In the end whoever ends up as GM and coach are going to force Jed to sign the sweetest contracts a GM and coach have ever seen. All because Jed has no outs anymore. It's remarkable that an owner is going to get played by two people to the extent Jed is going to get played.

True moron.

I don't think the 'feeling' of Cook playing with a winner, not to mention the greatest QB on the planet, can be underestimated. He knows what it's like to make decent coin, but being stuck playing with losers going nowhere anytime soon.
Of course, it's possible that he could go to another team with a strong QB (Pats, Steelers, possibly the Falcons, etc.), but these guys will be gone much sooner rather than later, and that would put him right back where he came from.
Finley got a good contract; no reason Cook can't also.

On the bright side. It doesn't suck that none of the assistant coaches in GB received an interview request from anyone. Allows them to focus. Right?

Right????

Sounds like Bills are sniffing around AVP for their OC job. Would seem to make sense. Curious if the Pack would just slide Clements back into the QB coach role, but let him keep his made up title. Just see if anyone notices.

Gerg Jennings disagrees. He left the Packers for greener pastures and look how much his career took off.

I disagree.  Cook knows what Jennings had to find out.  And that is, not all QBs are created equal.  As a receiver in the NFL your performance is tied to how your QB performs.  Of course the receiver must do his part.  But it is all easier when you have a good QB.  Cook has played for two other teams that did not have good QBs so he knows what that is like.  Jennings had played only in GB and deluded himself into thinking he could do what he did with Rodgers anywhere.

He had his ring, then got paid, hard to argue too much.

Think he would have earned more if his stats hadn't taken a ****?

No. I think he lost a bit of quickness which was enough to turn him in to just a guy who is also in decline. He wasn't a big guy or a burner, more like Brooks or Driver. Basically any physical decline is their swan song. At the end teams didn't even bother putting a d-back on Driver.
