A lot of talk about the Cavs sitting 3 stars against the Grizzlies... kinda having a hard time with the idea that paying fans will not get a professional product.

And it comes down to marketing- the NBA has always been about the individual player. Inundate the consumer with the player, sell the player. But then teams like the Spurs buck the marketing in the name of championships, and guys start getting "nights off".

I think these stars make too much $$$ that the public pays for to allow this practice to go unchecked. Coaches make the decision, OK- but give the consumer something back. Any owner would balk at this, but what's right is not always the best business decision.

Agree on this one. There are probably kids in Memphis who idolize LeBron and picked this game out for their parents to take them to months ago as it's the one time this year LeBron played in Memphis. They obviously weren't shelling out the money to see LeBron sit on the bench as a healthy scratch and see 36 year old James Jones play 25 minutes.

As big a problem is competitive balance. The team Cleveland put on the floor last night (minus LeBron, Irving, and Love) would be lucky to win 8-10 games over a whole season. Memphis is 18-9 and currently the 5th seed in the West. Let's say the 4/5 seed comes down to the last game of the season and the Grizzlies get the 4 seed by one game (over Houston which faced a full Cavs lineup when they played). It's a problem at the end of any regular season in sports when guys sit and get ready for the playoffs when there is nothing to play for, but at least there is some clear reasoning for when it happens. Just randomly gifting a mid-season game is a bigger problem.

Even reimbursement is problematic now that teams are selling "premium" packages for top opponents. I'm sure the Cavs owner is more than hally to see pissed off Bulls fans because his star didn't play.

The fans are the ones who should probably alter their perspectives... stop going to see a player. Go to see the team you like. Go to watch your home team. The greed of the "premium" packs and the secondary market are really the ones who get hurt when you withhold your $$$.
