I wonder how Norv did in divisional games at any of the many jobs he was fired from ?

He probably did pretty well against the AFC West during his time in San Diego since the Chargers were the only half decent team in that division for most of his tenure, and poorly against the NFC East during his time in Washington.

I was just looking over it. Sub .500 in the NFC East (20-34, played 8 divisional games back then, fired before he could lose his last two), and losses were rare against the AFC West in San Diego. Pretty much what I expected. Forgot about that stint in Oakland, went 1-11 against the AFC West during that stop. All said, a ****ty coach.

An eye-popping .750.

Not the point of the Norvening.  The idea is to become a fully capable coach and not just a "great" OC/DC in a HC position.  MM isn't there and I hope the progression over the season will learn him up on taking the reigns on defense as well.  First two games were underwhelming to say the least when it came to defense and that has been the means of early exits in the playoffs.

 

I like MM, I believe in the guy.  I want to see him become a truly great coach.

5 pages of gushing menses on a message board. Not a bad consequence for three plus years of sub-mediocre at its best, to terrible defensive football at its worst.

 

To be fair, they turned in two good quarters against the New York Jets and Geno Friggin' Smith (thanks Mike Daniels), after getting embarrassed for the two prior quarters. So there's that.

 

I like this Norvening thing. If MM gets a handle of the defense and turns it into a respectable unit, it will be seen as an indicator that he deserves to be mentioned with the Belichicks and Carrolls (yes, he's pretty good) of the NFL. Until then, he's a top notch offensive mind that really doesn't have much of an answer on defense.

 

Let's see if the 2nd half of the Jets game proves to be the point where the whole thing turned around. I certainly hope so.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Fond of Dudes.  Cheaty Pete brought the rugby tackling fundamentals with him and continues to implement that solid fundamental core with a new DC.  He has control of his entire team.  Schneider gets high marks for the talent he's brought in as well.  

 

Here's to TT and MM getting back to that place.  I suggest addition by subtraction.

I can't stand the guy.  I feel dirty.

Look at it objectively. Disregard his conduct at USC, and the Fail Mary game. He is the overseer of the most complete team in the league. His top tier defense doesn't do it with exotic schemes. Guys are almost always where they're supposed to be, and they're very good tacklers. Keep It Simple Stupid is working in Seattle.

 

Add to that it seems he's getting an elite offense to go with that top tier defense as well.

Hmmmm.

I'm shocked that upgrading the talent magically upgraded the production. It's almost like that was a bigger issue than Norv Capers letting the game pass him by.

If that's the case of one player upgrading the entire defense then TT must REALLY SUCK!  How does Dom suffer for 4 agonizing years knowing all his wizardy has gone to waste because TT can't pick ONE single player in that time to upgrade the entire defense.    Poor Dom.  

I'm still waiting for the upgrade in production, aren't we still bottom third in the NFL (that is with Jay throwing more passes to green and Christian Ponder)?  

 

If what we have seen so far is the sign that Dom has his **** together then the bar is pretty damn low.

That's a big list of suck. And the messed up thing is that AJ Hawk and Morgan Burnett have been surviving for years. So yeah when you subtract Andy Mulumba starting and add Julius Peppers it's shocking how big a difference one player can make...same goes for MD Jennings vs. Haha/Hyde. One healthy Julius Peppers or one healthy HaHa Clinton-Dix can make a humongous difference, they're much much much more talented than the guys they replaced. I've made no bones about the fact that I think this failure is squarely on Thompson, some his fault and some just bad luck. Guys have had their development hampered by injuries (Mike Neal, Nick Perry, Casey Hayward, etc.) and he's just missed on replacing guys like Jenkins, Collins, Woodson and now clearly Pickett and Jolly. That's not to say Norv Capers has been perfect, far from it.

 

Oh and if we're talking about the QBs they have faced well they have also done well against their QBs compared to the rest of the league. Jay Cutler has averaged a 97 rating in his 4 other games, 82 against GB. Matt Stafford has averaged a 95 in his other 4 games but strangely hard far and away his worst game against GB with a 61. As bad as Geno Smith is, he still saved his worst full game of the year for GB a 64 vs his 83 average against 3 other teams and an embarrassing 7 rating vs San Diego...that's not a brag to say we beat Geno Smith though. 

 

Stats are for losers.

So does he have talent now or not (whatever the hell your definition of talent is) cause they are still not good.  I'm pretty sure the 21 teams still ranked ahead of the Pack also have an AJ Hawk, Jamarri Lattimore, Letroy Guion and Morgan Burnett on their teams too.  

 

Your constant defense of Capers includes one of two things; he cannot elevate the play of the guys he is given, or he doesn't mater, because how well they play depends on how talented they are week to week.   Those are some seriously lowered expectations.  

I see a defense that has improved over the last three games. 

Talk to me after the Eagles, Patriots, and Saints games about a defensive turnaround. Until they go up against some elite QBs (Foles not quite there yet, but close) I'm going to be a bit skeptical.

 

If they can keep generating turnovers, that may be all that's really needed from them.

If we have a "defensive turnaround" with the crap we have in our interior D, MM and dan compers are doing it with smoke and mirrors and deserve and and all post season accolades. 

I agree (H5).  I don't think it was because they were more talented over the last 3 games than they were over the first couple.  

 

I worry because for the last few years there have been good games, even streaks of good games.  Big picture has been pretty bleak.  Maybe Mike and Dom have turned it around (fingers crossed).  Dom has essentially been the AJ Hawk of coordinators, his biggest attribute has been he shows up for every game and calls the defense.  If he (and AJ, fingers crossed) can evolve to the point where they are an average defense, then this team (with this offense) can go places.  That just has to (IMHTROYAM) opinion, be different from the booth, not just the talent is different now.  If it is that the booth is doing a better job as the coach, the growth will be sustained and the defense will continue to improve.

This defense looks different yet similar to the 2010 group. Giving up rushing yards, strong against the pass, and taking the ball away.

Lattimore versus Jones could be considered as them being more talented.
