It's far more likely you'll get 20 cents on the dollar for him next year.  Again, I'll disagree that a major league ready player is a concern right not.  It shouldn't be.  We should be finding young talent that is ready in 2-3 years such that in 4-5 years we may actually be competitive.

And, if you look back at the CLV offer, clearly regardless of what you or I think, the market for Lucroy is very soft, especially compared to RP.  I think its nuts that RP are being so overvalued right now, but that's reality.  The Yankees got org's top prospects for Chapman and Miller.  Lucroy was going to get a guy in the teens of Cleveland.   I don't get it, but that's what it is.

Pretty amazing day in terms of acquiring talent.  As noted above, it basically will be a test of time to see if they work out.  The Brewers seemed to reverse the trend of getting multiple prospects back for a single player and instead focused on more high quality prospects with a higher chance of impact.

The Giants deal was amazing for Smith.  Projectable 2-3 type starter in Bickford.  That alone makes it a decent deal, but adding in Susac.. perfect.  We now have a C again.. not quite a Luc, but he isn't terrible (is that a good qualifier).

I am not surprised that Gallo was not in the Rangers deal, he really wasnt a Stearns type of guy.  I really didnt think the Rangers would be motivated to move Brinson to the Brewers as Gallo seemed to be the more logical fit (they really don't have a place for him defensively - besides DH).  I am glad the Brewers went the route with Brinson - even though he is having an "off year" in AAA.  I bet when it came down to it we were offered the choice of Brinson or Gallo + PTNBL.  Getting Ortiz for Jeffress basically mimics the SF deal (same level of prospect, a little more advanced) except w/o the catcher addition (likely b/c Jeffress is 1 blunt from a permanent ban from baseball).

Great Day for the next generation of Brewers.  It reminds me of the Prince/Braun/Weeks/Hart days of how stocked the system is now.  Yeah, we are still early in it.. but a re-emergence is coming in a few years... I know it sucks to a degree, but when you play in a small market, these are the realities until they make a hard cap and have true revenue sharing.

We have Guerra / Braun still left as trade chips this winter as well.  Hoping Mr. Guerra wins ROY and finishes very strong.  I would deal him this winter if so.. he's 31 and this is a career year by far.  Gotta jump on that even if he is controllable forever.

New Brewers top 15 prospects (from my POV):  8 in the Top 100 for MLB.  Others knocking at the door.

Orlando Arcia - SS
Corey Ray - CF
Lewis Brinson - CF
Josh Hader- LHP
Phil Bickford - RHP
Luis Ortiz - RHP
Brett Phillips - CF
Trent Clark - CF
Lucas Erceg - 3b/1b
Isan Diaz - SS
Jorge Lopez - RHP
Marcos Diplan - RHP
Gilbert Lara - 3b
Jacob Nottingham  C/1b
Kodi Medieros - LHP

Pretty darn strong top 15.  Still pretty deep going to 25.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is the #1 system this winter or close at least.  They drafted 2 catchers (Feliciano and Henry) and gave both bonus money of 2nd round picks.  Right now if there is a weakness in the system it is catcher, but they made some headway at it by drafting those two guys.

Still would have loved Meija from Cleveland.  He has attitude issues, but his talent set screams Yadier Molina (and probably his head too).

System has lots of CF prospects.

From what i can tell, Stearns is leaning toward the defense/speed/pitching wins championships.  Can't say I disagree.  He did add some power in Brinson.. but most of his moves have centered around athletic guys.  Even Lucas Erceg who has power (2nd round pick), is pretty athletic.

Pitching wins in this league.  The Brewers are building some very good talent with these trades the last year or so.

There's no better place to be than a left handed (good) pitcher.  It's shocking how Milwaukee got almost as much in pure value in the Smith trade as the Lucroy trade.

Now tank the rest of the season to make the season complete with a high draft pick.

Stearns is the new TT in town

Besides Brinson and Ortiz, Texas sends us a 3rd player to be named later after the minor league season ends, Thats per what I read in the JSO this morning. Likely to be another of their top prospects.

 Edit: from the article

"In this case, we believe being able to acquire two premium prospects in Lewis Brinson and Ortiz was the right way to go, and another player to be named," Stearns said. "That meant packaging two very good, talented players together, but we're certainly very happy with the return that generated."

Stearns said the third player would not be named until after the minor-league season is completed. He said parameters were established with the Rangers to allow time for the Brewers to scout certain players in their farm system and make a selection that likely will be another top prospect.

Someone on BF.net says the list includes Yohander Mendez #2... if so.. that's a really good PTBNL.  3 other guys too Jurado #8, R. Guzman #5, P. Payano #21.

So all over the board according to MLB.com's prospect rankings.  So take this worth a grain of salt.. but that is what some internet person claims he has inside info on.  I think he was right on the Cleveland/Mil deal too.  So.. idk, i guess just wait for it all to come on out.

In the Sabathia trade, there was a PTBNL, and that ended up being Michael Brantley, perhaps you're thinking of that.

Also interesting that Brantley ended up being far and away the best player given up in that trade.

Yup, that's what i was thinking about... LaPorte was a zilch, but Brantley turned out quite good.

In a couple of years, the Brewers have basically retooled and restocked their minor league system.  They have some quality players at just about every level and from my perspective they might even be slightly ahead of schedule.

Time will tell in terms of just how good some of these players become and advance.  For every Lo Cain there is a Mat Gamel. For every Yo Gallardo there's a Matt Rogers.   Regardless, Stearns has a plan and they are well on track with the rebuild.

The only curveball in this whole thing is if Stearns gets plucked before his job is complete.   He's getting a lot of good publicity and there are always other teams out that have more history, more money, and more challenge.   Hope they can keep him around to see this through.
