Even if they don't move Matthews inside, he'd be good in a situational role rather than an every down player.

Matthews has always been a product of the weight room.  Look at last year: he started out the season looking pretty good (remember the late hits that weren't?).  It's as the season wears on that his body breaks down (at least since they developed a way to test for HGH in 2014, that is). 

In the middle, he's not taking on the other team's most athletic lineman (OT's), or getting double teamed.  He can eat guards and centers up.  Or if they want to save him for 3rd and long, that works too.
