The Bengals franchise tagging AJ Green has absolutely nothing to do with jersey sales. It has nothing to do with the Bengals thinking they will contend with him. It has nothing to do with Cincy being an incompetent franchise (though they are).

It has EVERYTHING to do with it being the obvious, smart business move.

They have the right to franchise him. If they choose to, they can do this between Feb 24 and March 10. And then they, and only they, can negotiate with him

If they do not franchise him, he is an unrestricted free agent as of March 16. And they Bengals get nothing. By franchising him, it buys them time to work out a trade, most likely heading into or during the draft. It also gives them more time to evaluate his health. And they can pull the franchise tag any time before July 15.

So it was actually the absolute correct move to do in February. Not certain why this is not plainly clear to everyone.
