What happens with a lot of players who stay with same team / coaching staff a long time is that because the nature of coaching is correct mistakes, all you start to see is the mistakes and lose perspective. IU players used to joke that the best way to get more playing time was to get hurt and have to sit out for a couple of weeks ....the less Knight saw them play, the better he thought they were. Can't remember if it was Mike Lombardi's book or somewhere else that I read that many on the NE staff began to think that they could win just as much with a number of different QBs & Brady received too much credit. You can bet that Brady heard this & was one if the reasons he wanted out. I heard speculation that the same thing may have been going on with Packers FO, giving more credit to MLF and his offense, rather than AR for their success.
