San Antonio had a decent team prior to Duncan but had one bad year in 1997 and tanked and ended up with the #1 pick and voila! They get Duncan and the rest is history.

It also didn’t hurt they hit several home runs on draft picks or personnel moves ala Tony Parker and Ginobili and Kahwi and have arguably the best head coach in the NBA (Pop).

Sometimes you need some luck as well and look no further than Giannis.
