Wonder why Benkert was released and kept Etling? Was looking fwd to seeing what he can do in the preseason.

"The timing of this move is also odd. Do the Packers need an extra roster spot for a signing or are they simply over the Benkert experiment? It should be noted that the United States Football League’s last week of the regular season is this upcoming weekend, meaning the players on non-playoff teams will be available to sign with NFL teams immediately. As we've seen over the years, Green Bay isn’t above signing players who have come off stints with Canadian, arena or startup leagues."

Benkert explains release

β€œThe way he did it and went about it, made respect for him, and for the window he cut me in, to give me an opportunity to go somewhere and compete for another job to make the 53, knowing there was no chance to make the 53 here…respect the (expletive) out of that,” Benkert said during a stream on Twitch on Sunday.

The Packers cut Benkert on Friday. While he said he β€œdefinitely didn’t expect it” and was β€œtruly surprised,” he understands the process from the team side and is thankful for the timing.

β€œHe could have kept me around for five weeks and then cut me as soon as I showed up for training camp, or kept me around for preseason, given me a quarter a game if that, and then cut me, Benkert said. β€œI’m just excited to see what’s next.”

In hindsight, the only guy that legitimately looked like a mistake in terms of the Pack giving up on too early was Taysom Hill.  He is a good backup QB that can keep you competitive if Rodgers is out.  Some other QBs the Pack has tried as backup have not been good enough to keep the team afloat (i.e. Brett Hundley).

I think you are watching a different Taysom Hill.

I just don't see anything in Hill. Yes, he's athletic. But he's 32 years old and has less than 300 pass attempts in his career. He had a few nice games in 2020, 2 of them against really shitty teams but for his career his numbers look like just a guy. When Brees was still around Hill wasn't even a backup. He was a 3rd string guy that would get some TE snaps and occasionally come in for a play that required throwing a ball farther than Brees was capable of doing or some goalline Tim Tebow type action. Speaking of Tebow, that's pretty much what I see in Hill. An athlete without a true position.

Now if keeping Hill would have meant they felt good enough to not use a first round pick on Love in 2020 then it would have some value.

Taysom Hill is a poor man’s Drew Stanton.

He is only in love with himself. Oh, and bilking Cali taxpayers out of thousands of hours of work.

Ask yourself. would you rather Y.A. be β€œteaching” your kids, or have him searching the internet for banal Packer stories written by juco journalists? Aren’t we screwed either way?

Some comments from Sammy Watkins' offseason trainer

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-w...-davis-sammy-watkins

Sammy Watkins, Green Bay Packers

Unprompted, Bert Whigham β€” Gabriel Davis' trainer quoted above β€” talked up Watkins, who’s also working out in Orlando with Davis.

Watkins played only 457 snaps last season and caught 27 passes for 394 yards with a touchdown in 2021. He didn’t catch a pass after Week 13.

β€œThat guy is going to be good for the Packers. He started working with us like seven weeks ago, and he said he wanted to be β€˜college Sammy.’ Sammy is going to have a big year. He told me, β€˜I want to be Clemson Sammy Watkins.’ And I was like, β€˜OK, let’s do it.’ He’s just up there squatting 405 for eight right now like it’s nothing. He started around 218, and he’s at 225 right now, too. He’s going to go be a No. 1 in Green Bay.

β€œSammy’s going to kill it. I have no doubt. He hasn’t trained like this since college. He’ll say that. β€˜I haven’t worked like this since college.’ We’re spending two-and-a-half, three hours on the field in this heat every day. And that sounds crazy, but that’s what your body has to go through so when you get to camp, it’s easy. And that’s been the knock on him. He gets hurt. Well, he hasn’t pushed his body in the offseason, and he’ll admit that.”

Getting all kinds of Charles Lee vibes.

Looking forward to seeing Robert Tonyan back out there...he adds a dimension to this offense that was missing last year.

In 2020 GB was spectacular in converting TDs in the red zone on 77 % of their trips. In 2021 - they took a step back, scoring TDs on only 57 % of RZ opptys

Here's some Tonyan highlights from his excellent 2020 season

And here's a lengthy write up on his journey from HS QB to NFL TE

Analytics that show explosive plays in the passing game are the second most predictive stat for any single game outcome have resulted in most teams playing "cover 2" , trying to give deep help along both sidelines. Having a TE that can run and threaten the middle seam really helps vs. that defense. Let's hope Tonyan comes back with the same athleticism he had before the injury.

After last season it's funny to go back and look at 2020 highlights with no crowd. I forgot how much chatter you heard from the players and the bench that year.

The chatter & comments are awesome, basically everybody was "mic'd up"

couple more snippets on Big Bob Tonyan from 2020 season

"Of the 49 tight ends who were targeted at least 25 times, Tonyan was No. 1 in catch percentage (89.7) and drop percentage (0.0) and No. 2 passer rating (148.3), according to PFF. He matched Travis Kelce for No. 1 in touchdowns. "

There are many respected Ootball coaches who say:
"IF he can do it once, he can do it again"

Here's hoping he can do it again in 2022.
