This one is going to be tough to swallow for some. I love the play Hiura has shown, but, Shaw is a great player too. Orlando Arcia needed two stints in the minors last year to get his swing worked out, and look what that has done for this Brewers team since.

Shaw is an asset to this team as much as Hiura is. They are just trying to work it out as best as they can. If we can get Shaw's return to 2017-18 form, that would be a big plus. Hiura will be back no matter what. They will figure it out. In the meantime, Hiura gets to work on his D.

I thought they might move Shaw to 1B, keep Hiura at 2nd and let Aguilar go, but it's probably too soon to give up on Jesus - he was an All-Star last year.  The leash is probably pretty short for a couple of guys not producing right now.   If things don't improve look for some more 'wrist' or 'lower back' injuries in the next few weeks.

Pretty sure they are all out of options with Aguilar.  To me, he’s the one that needs to step up.  He had a tremendous 1st half of 2018, but after the AS break he’s not been the same player.

Shaw has deserved the right to play to get things straightened out.  It’s amazing to me how quickly people want to kick him to the curb.  Hiura will be just fine.

I don't know what sending Hiura to Triple A accomplishes. What's he going to work on? He was on pace (over a 162 game season) for 44 HRs, 125 RBIs, and was hitting .333 there. His OPS was 1.106.

If he continued to play in the majors at his current pace, he was on pace (for a 162 game season) for 48 HRs, 86 RBIs, and was hitting .282.

Basically the rationale is that Shaw "deserves" a chance to come back and play. I'd say that after almost 50 years (and having a team that has a chance to advance deep into the playoffs this year) that the Brewers organization and fans deserve to have the best chance to win this year. This move does not do that.  if the Brewers make the playoffs and Hiura is healthy, there is a 100% chance he's on the playoff roster.

Shaw has options but Jesus and Thames do not. Not going to kick Jesus to the curb yet. Huira will be fine, plus we are playing a series against the Marlins so it's a good time to work out Shaws miserable play.....trying to be positive here. Shaw looks lost and if I'm not mistaken he didnt look very good in AAA either.

Sorry dude. Yeah, I just meant options, not player options. Shaw is under a team friendly deal, and he is as much an asset to the Brewers as is Hiura. Arcia got straightened out and look at what he's done. Same could be true for Shaw, and he probably will be our every day 3B next year, with a permanent move of Hiura to 2B next season.

Plus, the season is still somewhat young, with a month or so before the All-Star break. Hey, I'm trying to be positive too, just like you. I didn't want Hiura going back to AAA, but, I can understand their rationale, and I do trust Stearns and Counsell completely.

If Shaw doesn't come around, I'm sure they will call Hiura up, pronto~! I don't see a big problem with this, planned with a weaker schedule over next few weeks to try to get him back on line.

Nelson looked great for 4 innings, and then fell apart while  Counsell seemed asleep at the wheel. Even Manny Pina kept looking into the dugout wondering if Counsell was awake. He couldn't throw a strike and was left to load the bases with 3 straight walks and 0 outs. Was like watching little league.  Course the pen hasn't been worth a damn any way.

Wonder if the new pitching coach is feeling any heat.

Weird, weird, weird. 8 games over .500 and in 1st place in the NLC. Just got through toughest stretch of our schedule. Wobbly wheels & all.

Dog, our pitching has really struggled as compared to expectations. At least we are in a position to make moves at the deadline.

Last night was probably not going to be a win coming off the travel day on last leg of western road trip. We are finding some things out though. Shaw is probably going back down, and Aguilar is finding his way off the team if he doesn't get his BA over .200. Hiura will get called up again and will stick at 2B. Stearns will add another quality reliever and starter at the trade deadline.

We should be in good shape to make a run by then.

In danger of getting swept by the Padres. Important to get this game today.

Zach Davies may have pitched himself out of an all-star spot the last two starts. It was going to be an uphill battle anyway to get a third all-star with Yelich and Hader virtual locks to make it. Davies has given up 8 runs in 7 2/3rds during his last two starts and 11 earned runs in 12 and 2/3rds over his last three starts.

I was so disgusted with the batting in the 1st inning Tuesday.  Cain gets a single against a pitcher makeing his 1st ever start in MLB.  Yelich swings at the 1st pitch in his at bat and hits into a double play.  Then Braun comes up and hits the 1st pitch for an out.  A rookie pitcher gets out of his 1st inning with 5 pitches.  Make the kid work a little.   After that easy 1st inning it was no wonder he pitched so well.

Jeffress had been pretty solid lately until yesterday, but honestly they gave it away.

Just seems to be the theme with this years team.  They play well enough but come up short or can’t make the key play or get the key stop.  The 7th inning was the perfect example.  They take the lead but San Diego got it right back.  Machado reaches on a fluke play (someone should have gotten him out) then a walk then the 3 run bomb.  You have to execute and giving the other team extra opportunities will usually come back to haunt you.

Top of the 9th wasn’t much better.  Down 1 run Yelich reaches 2nd with one out and Braun walks but they can’t cash it in.  Just a lot of missed chances in this one.

I would think at some point they will have to decide what to do with 1B along with Travis Shaw.  Hiura will be back just a matter of how soon?  They could also use another proven arm in the bullpen preferably a lefty that doesn’t throw 75MPH junk like Claudio.

What’s hilarious is cherry picking one stat (OPS) and rationalizing that Thames is comparable to any of those players you mentioned.

Russell Branyan loves that analysis.

Thames hits some big long distance HRs I get it.  So did many before him.  How does his offense or style of play positively impact this team?  When it actually matters?

Let’s bench Braun and Cain and keep Hiura in the minors because Eric ****ing Thames has a better OPS than them. Good God man.

They’re losing 7-1 to the Reds... at home. THE ****ING REDS!!!!!

Stearns needs to get the **** up off his ass and get pitching. This is 6 of 7 to losing teams... a stretch they were supposed to go on a run. The starting pitching hasn't seen the 7th in... have they this year? Can’t be more than a couple times.

Send Nelson back down to get right. He’s all over the ****ing place. Make a trade. Make a couple...

Brewers need to get another reliever or two and a starter may not be a bad idea either.

We've been saying this since last season. Watching Jeffress pitch has me on the edge of my seat, most of the time. Last season, he'd bring the count full and load up the bases. In a tight game he'd give the other team a chance to get it close or to go ahead late, on several occasions. His pitching was all around the plate. I do not think his velocity was the issue. I think his control always has been a factor. If Stearns goes after relievers, he should think about going after one more, just to cover Jeffress's spot. There's a lot of baseball left in this season but not much time for Stearns to right the ship with our pitching staff, this season.

this is the Tscmack we know and love

Jeffress is sort of like the Eric Bledsoe of the Brewers.   You tend to love him or hate him.

He had a decent June until the 3 run bomb against SD but it happens.

They do need another quality reliever if not two.    Claudio is not the answer.  We all know how up and down Albers has been.

Was hoping to see a little more out of Jimmy Nelson but so far not so good.  If he continues to struggle they may need a starter as well.

Agreed on Nelson. They've let him start 3 games and he's had control problems in each start. He's walked 10 guys in 12 innings and the Brewers are 0-3 in his starts. They need to move him to middle relief if they are going to keep him on the roster. At least you can let him eat some innings up and if he doesn't have it CC is more comfortable giving him a quick hook.

They were obviously hoping that Nelson could be their mid-season addition that made a difference. They thought they were going to get the 2017 version of Jimmy Nelson. The problem is that essentially that's the only year he was any good in his career. He lead the league in walks in 2016 and hit batters in 2015 and 2016. He was 12-6 in 2017, other than that his career record is now 21-40.

Since July 1 of last year, Yelich has played in 150 games. He's hit 54 HRs and driven in 137 runs. He's had 200 hits in 566 at bats and walked 80 times. He's hitting .353 in that time and has an OBP of .433 and is slugging .730.

That's an OPS of 1.163.

The top career OPS of all time is Babe Ruth and that is 1.164.

He also leads the NL in stolen bases and is 16 for 17 on attempts this year.

This is why they need another bullpen arm. CC used Hader a lot last year in high leverage situations like tonight. Two out, bases loaded, top of the 7th in a game you trail 6-4. That out there means a lot more than an out in the 9th with nobody on base. Because he's only using Hader as a closer, he brings in Burnes who walks a guy with the bases loaded and then gives up a 2 run single. The season is half over and Burnes has a WAR of -1.6 as a reliever.
