I think snaps would be more important. See Perry & Worthy.

Yeah, only OTA's, but I wish they would make this more of an open comp with Hawk and the 3 backup MLB's

No no, Hawk is a bust too.

Ever hear of a team running the ball into the nickle defense?

Wilson's knowledge of the defense is far superior to Worthy.. Zombo vs Perry.. Best way to get the better athlete the knowledge he needs is via snaps..

Obviously the difference between Hawk and Smith, Frenchy, Rook is not the same as Zombo / Perry.. Put the point is valid.

No, Hard to hand the ball off when your playing Defense.. Sorry had to.. I think you meant against the nickle.

His strength is knowledge and experience.. So yes, he would be best suited to recognize a draw.. But no, I honestly don't think he brings more to the table in regards to shedding blocks or pursuit then your avg MLB. MM has said they want to play less Nickle and get back to the base more this year.. So we are not talking about 80% of the snaps.

I would like to see Smith, or whoever they deem best for that job of the 3, given an equal amount of snaps with the #1's in the nickle to gain that experience.

Actually, in terms of coverage, Hawk is one of the better inside linebackers in the league. And surely the best cover linebacker on the team. He's fine in the nickel.

Wow.. We couldn't disagree more. Tough to provide statistical evidence for either claim I guess. I can tell you they signed Chillar to replace him in Nickle a few years ago, but he got hurt. I can tell you McGinn agree's with my take, but that doesn't make it gospel either.

A.J. Hawk: The first of the opponents' 73 passes for 20 yards or more was given up by Hawk on an option route against the Saints' Darren Sproles for 36 yards. Months later, Dom Capers referred to that awful play trying to explain how difficult it was trying to find adequate matchups against some teams. Capers did what he could to hide Hawk in coverage. Still, he gave up five 20-plus passes. Against the run, Hawk was a late reactor who never delivered a smashing hit and often took bad angles or was a step slow in pursuit. He missed 15 tackles, six more than in any of his five previous seasons, and had just 1½ for loss. Thirteen players had at least one turnover play but Hawk didn't have any. He did improve in one area, ranking fourth among the blitzers with one pressure every 9.23 snaps. Grade: D.

What league are we talking about?

AJ Hawk isn't the only linebacker in the league that had trouble covering Darren Sproles. He's not an all-star coverage linebacker but he's not bad. Especially last year. And actually, there is quite a bit of statistical evidence to back that up.

According to ProFootballFocus, Hawk graded out as the 12th best linebacker in the NFL in terms of coverage. He gave up 263 yards while being in primary coverage, the 6th best of all linebackers. When you take into account the amount of time Hawk spent in coverage relative to other linebackers, his ranking improves even more, giving up .67 yards per coverage snap, 4th best in the league.

Not sure if that will work. You need a subscription to PFF to access the signature stats.

Granted last year was a strange year for everyone on the defense and I don't think Hawk even came close to having that good of a year in coverage in previous seasons. But still. Me thinks you dost protest too much.

DJ Williams with a one-handed catch down the sideline over MD Jennings from Rodgers in team.

If Sam Shields is losing ground to rookie Casey Hayward or Devon House, there's no sign of it. Shields has been with the no. 1s all OTAs.

Erik Walden and Dezman Moses continue to work at ROLB with Matthews out.

Clay Matthews is doing jog through but doesn't have a helmet so he probably won't do much. He felt some tightness last week and dropped out

A couple of guys have returned to #Packers OTA practice: FB Jon Hoese, C Sampson Genus
‏@RobDemovsky
McCarthy on Tramon Williams: He looks stronger, explosive. That was a significant injury he suffered, played on it and bothered him.

@RobDemovsky
MM on RBs: I dont think you can really assess any position without pads. This time of year is evaluate movement skill, fine motor skills

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy calls Brandon Saine "probably the most consistent guy we have back there" among the running backs.

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on depth on roster: It's a very "athletic" football team. At RB: "I feel very good about the ability."

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on moving into minicamp next week: "The way we'll approach it here, it's really an extension of the OTAs."

@RobDemovsky
MM on Harrell's arm strength: I think everyone would agree that Graham's throwing with more velocity. He's stronger.

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on Harrell: "I think Graham's having a nice spring, but there are still things he needs to work on."

@RobDemovsky
MM on Mike Neal: Mike's a totally different man today than when he came back from the injury. He's been humbled, he's been thru challenges
‏@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on Woodson: "I don't think it's feasible to move Charles around as much as we have in the past."

@jasonjwilde
Then, McCarthy calls Woodson "a playmaker, he's played nickel, dime, corner, safety for us. He'll continue to do those things."

‏@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on Shields, House, etc.: "Improvement. The confidence they're moving with, our young CB group we are excited about."

‏@jasonjwilde
McCarthy: "There's a lot better understanding." Says House has done "an excellent job in the weight room," is a different man this year.

‏@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on Shields: "We need Sam to be consistent. ... It's a good young group."
Not being able to cover Sproles is something that 95% of all LBs in the league will struggle with. He's a matchup nightmare for just about anyone.

However, I have a difficult time believing that Hawk is one of the better coverage LBs as well.

He's pretty ordinary and I have a feeling he'll be pushed hard this offseason by some of the younger guys. Maybe he retains his spot, maybe he doesn't. We'll see.

That is great to hear about Worthy. I hate to say it, but we really need him to produce as a rookie. We need pressure up the middle and it sounds like he can help immediately.

"He also shows really good pursuit."

LIAR!!!!

"One thing that impressed me was Perry was never once corrected as to alignment or responsibility."

Coach Greene caught the Worthy disease? Get back to work, Greene. Coach the kid.
Guessing Whitt is talking just about his guys...CB's, when he says "grown more than anybody else". Safeties are in the room down the hall. Smiler

Dom is the ruler over the entire defense. I gotta go with him.

I was at the TC practice where he got hurt last year and he did look good before the injury. I didn't know who he really was and I remember looking him up on a roster card after noticing him make several plays during that practice, and then 20 minutes later he got injured.
:bumped from 2012 OTA:

This thread = Last Years' OTA comments offer some interesting tidbits...as GB opens this years' version of OTAs today in GB

I had forgotten that they switched Clay from left to right starting the 2012 season. This year he stays right, while the OL swaps sides
