Rivera was 13-19 after two years. Always liked and respected Lovie and as far as retreads go Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick could have both been considered retreads at some point in their careers.

Lovie might make a good DC for the Packers but I'm guessing MM sticks with Dom.

I agree, but only if you have the right personnel. You aren't going to hire Lovie and not run Tampa 2. To make Tampa 2 work, you need outstanding ILBs/MLBs. Guys like Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Derrick Brooks that are fast enough and can make deep enough drops to take away the seam routes in the middle of the field.

Stay classy Glazers:

Bucs fired Lovie by phone

Lovie Smith AP

When the Buccaneers fired Lovie Smith last night, they didn’t even call him into the office for a meeting with the Glazers (or the Bobs).

According to multiple reports, the Bucs informed Smith he was fired via a phone call. Shortly after they called Smith, they announced the move to the public.

Some people close to Smith seem unhappy about that. As one source told ESPN’s Vaughn McClure, “You don’t hire a coach over the phone, so why would you fire him over the phone?”

It sounds like someone in the Bucs front office called Lovie and asked him to come into the office today for a meeting. Lovie started with the  "come in for what?" questions and before long he figured out it was so they could fire him. So he chose to skip the meeting altogether and had the Glazer's can him over the phone.

Fair game to question firing a guy after two seasons but it doesn't sound like they called him up and left a "You're fired" voice message.

I heard it was by a text sent by Glazer's 15 year old daughter.

" U R frd"

The Browns do some cool things. They have guys like Kevin Mack and Bernie Kosar go through the business rows pumping up staff. But where it counts they are a consistent mess.

@AdamSchefter: Eagles requesting permission from Giants to interview Tom Coughlin, per sources. Interview likely to occur Monday, before owners meeting.

@AdamSchefter: Eagles must get permission from Giants to interview Tom Coughlin being that he stepped down with year on deal. Giants will not stand in way.

@ChicagoBears: Offensive coordinator Adam Gase has left #Bears to become head coach of Miami Dolphins.

@RapSheet: Current Chicago QB coach Dowell Loggains is the heir apparent in Chicago as #Bears offensive coordinator. Very close with Jay Cutler.

Browns announce Hue Jackson as head coach.

Reports are that he has his OC lined up.

@AlbertBreer: I mentioned this last week: look for respected Packer assistant Mike Solari to have a prominent role on the Browns 2016 staff.

Also rumors are that one of Jackson's demands for taking the job is that he gets to move on from Manziel.  We will see if it is a rumor or not but I cannot say I blame him.

Jackson is a really good coach too  bad he has to try and rescue the Browns.

New GMs don't hold on to holdover Head Coaches if they have any say. They may use them for a one-year scapegoat when they tear down the roster, but that's about it.

From a certain perspective, it makes sense. If everything truly does fall to him, starting fresh with a guy he picked (and more likely with loyalty to him) is a standard move.

How did Hue become the next Vince Lombardi? He was nothing short of a lying clown with the Raiders

With that Oakland team he did pretty well.  Cincy's offense has been pretty good the last two years.  He isn't Lombardi,  but he is worth a shot for Cleveland.  There really isn't any Lombardi clones out there.

@RapSheet: One name to watch for potential offensive coordinator under Ben McAdoo's #Giants: Joe Philbin. They worked together in Green Bay.

Another one of those crony hires.
