Rookie QB Joe Callahan will start today for #Packers vs. #Colts, meaning no Rodgers/Hundley pck.rs/2aCb165

Who is Joe Callahan? Wesley College, completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 12,878 yards and 130 TDs with 38 INTs

.@CwoodsonF, @Hasselbeck, & @RandyMoss make their Sunday NFL Countdown debut tonight at 7ET on ESPN.

.@AaronRodgers12 is @WildeAndTausch’s first guest EVER! Interview will air in a 4-part series starting Tuesday.

Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy discussing field conditions, area on logo big concern

Colts GM Ryan Grigson also on scene

There are large chunks of this field that are nothing but rubber pellets right now.

Someone on HOF Stadium field said rubber pellets are melded together, and it's impossible to get a cleat into it. So that's a problem.

Standing on the field, it's hard for me to imagine how they can play a game safely on this surface. Cleat could get stuck in hard rubber.

Field Turf melted on parts of logo, it's like rubber, big concern cleats will stick there, major player safety issue

Some problem with @ProFootballHOF midfield logo. Less than 2 hrs to kickoff. No warmups yet. I smell paint.

End zone issue too

This is not the same field as the one #Steelers complained about last year. It was taken from the Superdome after Sugar Bowl this year.

Safe to say people on both teams are pissed right now. #Packers and Colts didn't want to play this game anyway.

Preseason games have been cancelled before due to turf issues. Eagles-Ravens in '01. This is a bigger stage & embarrassment, obviously.

There is an issue with the field in Canton causing a lengthy delay. Warmups have not started, and fans have not been let in yet.

Players who were on the field are now heading back to the locker room. There have been lengthy discussions with executives near midfield.

Both teams have exited the field and the big brush that was being used to sweep the field has been removed. Not looking good.

Issue isn’t rubber pellets themselves, it’s that the paint on the field has done something to make them rise and cause sticky soft spots.

Both organizations very concerned about playing surface and there are real questions about whether tonight's game will be played.

Uh oh. Looks like there is concern with the field. Seems to be concern on both sides. Link Titm posted talked about this being a borrowed field from the Superdome.

From article: "However, the Field Turf surface has been replaced as part of the stadium’s $80 million renovation with a surface known as UBU turf that was removed from the Superdome after the 2016 Sugar Bowl. A new permanent surface will be installed in Phase Two of the renovation, which begins shortly after the Packers and Colts play"

Tom Silverstein: Got to think GM Ted Thompson won’t let his team play on this surface unless he’s positive it’s safe. Not sure who makes that call that it is.

How does the NFL keep putting teams in a position they have to figure out if a field is safe to play on?

But by Oldschool's logic, if TT hates the turf he must really love the turf so he has no excuse for not allowing his team to play.

Let me get this straight:  The NFL is a "cabillion" dollar corporation that ponies up a "cabillion" dollars to have teams play in foreign countries, but can't throw the Hall of Fame a bone and put in a state of the art field?

The best possible field should always be in place each year for this game.  Shameful.  EmbarrASSing.  Cheap.

No way they should play the game if the field isn't NFL ready.

UPDATE on field conditions in Canton - they'll go through pre-game, but game may become glorified practice because of field issues

Fans now being let into stadium, but both teams have gone back to locker rooms. We've had no updates in the press box to this point.

The paint that was applied today on middle of field, and in endzones, has congealed; would be like playing on tar. Game now doubtful.

As @NFL weighs what to do about tonight's game given the field conditions... if it's canceled there will be something. A fan fest perhaps

Maybe he'd love to see his team play tonight.

I'm back home up nort and fighting with the crappy wifi, but have to say this is one of the biggest cluster****s ever.

Silver lining is that we probably don't have to listen to Gruden slurping Brent during the traditional in-game interview they do with the new HoFamers. Although since ESPN now has three hours of dead air to fill I wouldn't be surprised if they pay Brent to give us 3 hours of homespun piety and bull****.

Positives:

-Janis had no miscommunications with the QB.  He's turned the corner on route running.  Possible pro bowler this year.

-No low character plays for Adams.  He's back on track.  Likely pro bowler this year.

Negatives:

-Offense put up 0 points.  Poor play calling by MM.  Time to go back to Clements?

-Jordy held to 0 zero catches.  Clearly not back from ACL.  IR?

-Lacy averaged 0.0 yards per carry.  Weight still an issue.  First cut?

I've got to disagree here.  This is just more evidence that Adams is a quitter.

You're right.  Looking back over the film, saw zero effort out of him.  Didn't even show up on film.  Invisible.  It's almost like he didn't even leave the lockerroom.  Head wasn't in the game today.

McCarthy: I want to thank Packers fans. We were looking forward to performing tonight, but end of day about player safety."

McCarthy: “It was important to get into real football. You get tired of practicing against ourselves. We’ll have to wait until Friday."

McCarthy on Favre playing: "We only had 2 QBs so I was thinking about it."

Randall Cobb: “I think most disappointing part is (fans) not getting a game from us. But most important thing is player safety."

Cobb: “We want to get back into who we are, that big explosive offense.

Rodgers spills the beans that Jordy Nelson might be back next week. First I’ve heard of any timetable for his return.

Rodgers: “I think Richard Rodgers has had a great training camp for us and hope we get Jordy back on the field next week."

Rodgers: I wanted to see our young receivers. Wanted to see Trevor Davis catch some over the top throws. Really wanted to see Davonte Adams.

Rodgers mentions Geronimo Allison, said he really wanted to see him play as well. Feels bad Callahan and Williams didn’t get to play.

I've seen this with different sports at different levels when the game site does not normally host games. Every NFL / college has a full-time grounds crew that is employed by the team. With Canton only playing one game, who do they employ for their grounds crew? Do they use the local high school's crew? Whoever was in charge of the field did not appear to have expertise in this particular type of field.

Gotta agree with ya, Boris. This will be dissected ad nauseam, but the bottom line is this is a big black eye on the NFL at a time when they cannot afford more negative publicity.

They might not have been responsible for the field's condition (my understanding is that the NFL HoF is solely responsible for the preparations, including the field care), but the buck stops with the league. This was to be an NFL sanctioned game, and the onus to make sure that the conditions are acceptable should rest with Goodell and his minions. How there weren't NFL officials at least overseeing the preparation is mind boggling to me. And now, a lot of good people who paid good money to be at the game are getting disappointed. They'll get the ticket price refunded, and it looks like the Hall of Fame is doing everything they can to make the night exciting as it can be sans actual football (announcing the HoF inductees, interviews, players meeting with the fans, etc), but there's no making up for the time and effort (not to mention travel expenses) expended by the fans just to get to Canton. Free passes to the Hall of Fame might be a nice olive branch, but that assumes that the fans can take the time off, and travel to Ohio again, to use them.

At the same time, I applaud David Baker for the decision made here. Regardless of where the blame ultimately rests, the well being of the men on the field is of paramount importance. He got some boos when the actual announcement was made to the fans in attendance (frustration, I'm sure, not directed at him personally), but he did the right thing. The Hall is non profit, and they stand to lose $4 million in gate receipts (and the NFL with all their millions BETTER refund the Hall for 100% of that money). But the Hall of Fame has always been about the men that have played the game, and Baker has my respect for making a tough call.

"What is necessary is never unwise."

If you're in Vilas County right now, just stop.

Stop it.

Stop right now.

Nothing can be wrong.  Ride the bike.  Fish.  Get to the A-1.  Fish some more.  Chase a loon.  While fishing.

Watch out for Indians and black flies.  But mostly Indians.

Been out for two weeks now.  Cannot wait until next year.

Jesus.  I love it up there so much.  So very much.

More details coming out. They used the wrong paint & noticed it was not drying. tried using heat to dry the paint which melted the rubber pellets that the field is made of. When the pellets cooled, they hardened to form a solid surface in some places, & a tar-like consistency in other places. Sounds like the ground crew was not familiar with working this type of field.

Grounds crew decided they could get in a quick 18 holes this morning before painting the field.

The old homestead is in Oneida County about 2 miles from Vilas.

Spent last night in Vilas getting torqued with some high school buddies.

Everything you've said is so true. No better place in the world to grow up, thank you Mom and Dad!

I'm pretty sure the HoF is not part of the NFL. It's more like a tourist attraction dreamed up by the Canton chamber of commerce. Seriously, Canton's significance to pro football is no greater than dozens of other towns who couldn't compete when it became "big" business back in the 1930s.

It's not like the science of painting a plastic field is some arcane art. Most large high schools have that amount of expertise. Don't use solvent based paint. Doesn't take a genius.

I guess they forgot to test it on an inconspicuous part of the field.

The NFL is a billion dollar business run by billion dollar businessmen.  They have all the connections and experience to make the Hall of Fame game proceed seamlessly.  What they're showing is they don't really care about this extra, nearly meaningless game.  Hopefully they get rid of it next year.
I

I'd like Saturday to be the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions and then Sunday  be individual teams Hall of Fame inductions in their own stadium followed by family night practice or scrimmage.  Have the team hall of famers give speeches in front of the all home crowds, bring back the great players from the past and get everyone excited for the season ahead.  I'd love to see Nick Collins get to give a speech in Lambeau.

I think that's technically accurate, but there are a number of NFL owners on the board trustees of the Hall of Fame.  So while it's not technically the NFL, it's really hard to separate this and say it's an HOF issue and not an NFL issue.

NFL blew it.  Very hard to believe how a league this big can't get the right paint on a field.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it but isn't this the 3rd time the Packers had the HOF game suspended or cancelled?  I think back in the late 70's maybe they had one rained out (78 or 79 maybe) then there was the one against the Chiefs in the early 2000's that was rained out.  I was there for that one I have never been wetter in my entire life.  One bolt of lightening came down and it must have rained 6 inches of rain in a half hour.

Word. 2 preseason games. That's it. Unfortunately $$ speaks too much

I think they might finally be inching that way. Most teams have the scaled pricing in place now which is just slowly conditioning fans to absorb the hit of a ten-game price tag over eight games.

God knows they'll try to make an 18-game regular season happen by any means possible, but I think the player's union might be pretty firm on that. If we can just get to 2 ps games, and an 18-week regular season with an extra bye week before every team's TNF game, they might finally have it figured out.

I could live with that...is that the proposal?
