Really glad Gute is taking a measured approach. My guess is when looking back only about 20% of these first-day high-money moves will look good.

Same here.  Spending like a drunken sailor in free agency right off the start has not always been the way to win (Look at Daniel Snyderbrenners track record).  Gute is taking the smart approach by not getting sucked in to cap crippling contracts.  I think we need to sit back and watch him work and he will sign players that he thinks fits the system for cap friendly deals.

the fa talent this year though does not reflect the insane $ they are getting.  the  top notch talent get tagged.  so if you take them off the tag, then you pay big$ but you have a better chance of getting a game changer.  only time this happened recently, like in a while, is mack last year and they had to pay, but the guy is a game wrecker.  brown and bell, those guys ... are headcases, talented but will flame out or take the team down with them.  the other guys were all average to above (a little) - but Barr is not worth that $, collins not worth that $, mosely not worth that $...Foles maybe but only because of his position and he has hardware.  i guess it s draft and low-mid level fa guys for gb...seems like we are used as pawns for these guys to improve their own contracts with other teams.

Dwight Schrute at his finest.

In their last three years, their major March signings can be broken down into seven bad signings and six good ones. While that number seems tenable, most of the bad deals were far more expensive than the good ones. For example, they paid out $47.725 million in guaranteed money in the deals that were deemed bad and just $8.625 million on the good ones.

While Ball remains the Packersā€™ contract negotiator, itā€™s clear that Gutekunst and his staff have wrestled away control of the decisions

i think they should keep perry (oof).  this does allow the draft to have the lap fallers get snatched up, no matter where they are.  it really opens up someone on the OL / TE to be the picks, likely even a S / Pass rusher...or even ilb, all kinds of options now, i also think they will re-sign cm3 - so that's becoming a nice rotation, i think if perry and cm3 are not 3 down guys -they stay on the field for the full season.

PFT says GB is one of 6 teams in the running for Laveon Bell.

I wouldn't have given this any attention previously but with today's dealings it really changes the complexion of where the Packers are going. Showing they want to win now brings all kinds of possibilities. The draft now looking to have lots of options.

The are add on offense, too. Theyā€™re signing versatile OL Billy Turner, source said.

Turner is a swing player who played both tackles positions and left guard. The showed interest in re-signing him, but the price was too high. He fits the wide zone type of guard the Packers are looking for and could easily fill the RG position.

Figured Perry would be gone, and it's a good move for the Pack and for Perry.  He is better fit in a 4-3.  Good luck to you, Nick.  Hope you can get healthy.

No thanks on CM3.  He gives great effort in run D, but his legs are shot.  Would still like to see one more EDGE signing, actually, once the FA frenzy dies.  Maybe a one-year prove it deal or low-pick trade for another player on a roster.  Reggie Gilbert is at best a 5th EDGE, Fackrell should be no higher than 3rd/4th EDGE.

Was hoping for a OLB signing like Preston Smith, but sounds like he has several teams calling....would be happy with Z'Darius Smith as a fall back. Then get a guy like Tre Boston if the other safeties are demanding too much coin. Underrated.

Hehe....Happy Days !!

Gutelicious on the move !!

I give no shits about the money or this perceived ā€œcap hellā€ some speak of. Rosters and caps are fluid. Sign players and fā€™ing win games.

Itā€™s time for a Gooty-call.

Rodgers ain't getting any younger.

Go for it now....if it fails.....then tank, get #1 overall pick for Jesus (Clemson QB)

John Pluym ESPN

LB Preston Smith, who intends to sign with the Packers when free agency officially opens at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, should be significant upgrade rushing the passer. Smith has 103 QB pressures in the past two seasons, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, ninth in the NFL and ahead of players such as Cameron Jordan (99), Calais Campbell (93) and Jadeveon Clowney (88).

We'll have to see how the numbers shake out for these contracts.  The Turner APY is pricey though.  Unfortunately, that is cost of drafting poorly and having to turn to FA.

I don't pay attention to contract numbers reported today. How the deals are structured, what the actual cap hits are, guaranteed/bonus $$, etc... all of that is the real meat. We won't know all that for a few days.

GB has some young talent there... Not saying theyā€™re set, but there are other places on roster where thereā€™s much less talent.

Jaire Alexander. Thatā€™s it.

No.  King can play if he is healthy and Jackson is heading into year two.  GB has some good young talent there.  Now they just have to pan out.

When has King ever been healthy? He's like Justin Harrell with tallant. Those kind of guys are always hurt. Their bodies can't keep up. Jackson is young so I will give him the benefit of doubt, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's a bust.

Yay! Pack signs z'daruius Smith!!

It needs it's own thread .

Great signing in my opinion. The guy is an OLB who is 6 foot 4 and 270 lbs. and can flat out run.  He is widely considered to be the Ravens best defender last year with 8.5 sacks and something crazy like 60 QB hits and pressures.

60????

There were 2 things that worked against Nick Perry here.  1st, he was a little bit out of position in a 3-4 defense, he probably would have been at his best in a 4-3.  2nd, he was made of glass.  Neither was his fault, so I have nothing against the guy.  He did have his moments, but never seemed like quite as good as they thought he could be with the exception of one really nice year.
