Steelers released LB Jon Bostic.
Bostic started 14-of-16 games last season but played a modest 561 snaps, splitting time between the middle and weak-side. A pure run-stopper, he had a replacement-level year. Bostic's release comes after the Steelers drafted two inside linebackers, including Devin Bush at No. 10 overall.

Did not know that Clay tried to work out some sort of deal to come back to Green Bay but the team wasn't interested.
Did Perry break his hand picking up the phone?
It was time to move on from Clay. Even with a home team discount he's a guy that's only going to continue to decline.

We may never know the real storyline on him...but forever grateful for the "Spill em Pickett" leadership at crunch time for another Lombardi.
Long term though...I do hope to see him standing at Pre-season games like a loving old Packer fart.

Loved Clay, but he no longer had the combination of speed and strength to get around the edge, and he was never built to bull rush. That, plus he was an injury waiting to happen. He may put up some decent numbers this season with the talant that is surrounding him in LA, but I do not see him having any sort of "resurrection" where we all regret Gutterguts letting him go.
Perry will get signed by some team after Tuesday that's desperate for a lukewarm pass-rushing body. If they can keep him on the field, he'll be just like he was in GB -- solid, but never living up to the hype. He might have been better if he had stayed at DE like he wanted to... who knows?
But, with the Smiths and now with Gary, both were expendable.
I’m fine with the Packers letting Perry walk. But there are a lot of worse players starting and playing than Perry.
Perry was a reasonably productive player when healthy. Problem is he almost never was.
It is a shame about Perry it really was because IF he was healthy he could do some good things. But the team couldn't continue to pay him big money for a guy who saw the field less than 50% of the time.
If Perry signs anywhere, one year vet minimum prove it deal. He'll probably have an awesome season.
If you take injuries aside (and I realize that's a lot to put aside), both Nick Perry and CMIII no longer fit the body type and mold that Pettine wants in that defensive front.
That's why they chose Gary and Gutenheimer said as much in his post draft interviews.
They want guys who are tall ( >6'4), rangy, thick, fast and can really play anywhere along the DL. It makes it much more difficult for an offense to know where to line up their guys along the OL when you aren't sure who is coming from where.
Also, do not skim past the hiring of Mike Smith as OLB coach. He will be a huge difference maker under Pettine. The guy flat out knows how to mold guys into very very good pash rushers.
I think Pettine wants players who are disciplined on the edge. Clay couldn't set an edge to save his life. When he was younger he won more than he lost gambling on making a play, but in recent years he's losing more than he's winning on those gambles and giving the offense good opportunities.
I wouldn't call Perry undisciplined, he's been good against the run, but yeah he's just not very versatile. He can't drop back as an off the ball LB and he's not big/strong enough to really slide inside, so he's just an edge player...and not a particularly good edge player considering that's all he can really offer.
Except that Perry is/was in that mold. Gary is only an inch taller and 10lbs heavier. Perry just didn't have the athleticism Gary has. And Perry's time in GB had just run its course for all the reasons exhausted in this thread.
Perry, when he was at his best and not injured, was a really inconsistent player. He would get you 3-4 sacks in a 2 game stretch and then disappear for 5. And then hurt for 5.
