In the days of Ted, there would be no point in even thinking about the Packers making any kind of real splash in FA. But Gutenmeister has publicly said he plans to be active this year in FA.

So since the Packers season is done, I thought it'd be interesting to have a discussion about who Gute may target.

Good list of the UFA Class here

LB CJ Mosely  Safety Tyrann Mathieu, and yes TE Jared Cook (assuming the Packers dump Graham) would all be instant upgrades at their respective positions.

Besides this list, there is going to inevitably be surprise vet's cut before March who will then become available or ones who will be traded. WR Antonio Brown is already among them.

I am very excited to see what Gute is going to do in free agency and I love it that we have a guy who is not gun shy at all for using it.

Some of the names for me on this list make me scratch my head.  Tyler Eifert? I don't think he has played in more than 6-8 games in any season he has had in the NFL.  I do like the Honey Badgers potential but he seems to be hurt quite a bit.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Gute go heavy after/sign one of the guards Cann or Greco

Brown is due to make $22 million in 2019. His cap hit is $21 million if they cut him loose. Pitt is in a bad spot here. Can’t imagine a team is going to consider taking on a contract like that for a guy that’s a problem.

The Steelers sure have had some messes recently.  First there is that whole Bell thing with the franchise tag and now Brown and his shenanigans.   Maybe its just me but perhaps it might be time for Tomlin to go much like it was for MM?

I can't see a team taking on that contract but if anyone does it will be the Jerruhs or Chuckies of the NFL.

As a whole, it's an underwhelming FA list.  Figures that when we have a GM finally ready to shop, the shelves are pretty bare.  Whatever value there may be in terms of available O-Line help, there will be stiff competition.  Just read that the Bills are looking to sign 2-3 O-linemen to better protect Josh Allen and help in his development.  They have about $90 million available.

Train Wreck with Antonio Brown

Can't see him as a Steeler in 2019. Between this and the drama with Bell, have to wonder if Tomlin's grip on the locker room is gone. That place sounds like a fu$$ing mess.

I honestly thought Tomlin was getting fired when they didn't make the playoffs.

Antonio Brown would be 39M for 3 years.   Not awful for a top 3 receiver.   We’ve dealt with problem children before.   I think he should be considered.  Losing Cobb, we need a WR and he and Adams would be a nice 1-2.  If we’re looking at Rodger’s window, why not?  We need skill players on both sides of the ball.

OL is more important than Brown. They need to get the number of hits Rodgers takes reduced. Part of that is on him, but it's mostly from a lack of OL talent. Bulaga can't stay healthy anymore, Spriggs has no business on an NFL roster, and McCray and Bell are not starters. Fix all that first. Brown is worthless if Kizer is throwing him the ball.

AB in Green Bay would make all the young WRs better plus Adams would make AB better.

Fixing the OL is definitely a priority. I'm sure Gutey isn't going into 2019 as status quo on the OL.

On the FA list from Packerbois link, I noticed John Brown. He would be a good value WR FA like TT used to sign. Also a couple of the OL too not Iupati but he might be a good stop-gap guy.

For TE I'd love Eifert if the guy can stay healthy for 1 God damn season.

Our impact players are?

Rodgers, Adams and Jones. And they don't mean jack if there's no protection in front of them.

I'd include Bakhtiari as well. On defense, it's probably limited to Kenny Clark at this point.

I thought it was just about offensive skill players since he was clamoring for Antonio Brown. Which I agree with the just say NO sentiment.

Taking in the whole team, I think Jaire will be one in 2019. The defense was so much better with him on the field.

1 pick and 0 FF.   He played well for a rook, but far from a impact player.   The secondary has been managed like shit and full of shit for so long, we forget what an impact player on D looks like.

Im not saying he doesn't have potential to become that, clearly he does.   Daniels had a impact player type season or two ago, obviously Clay was at one time..  Woodson.   Alexander wasn't close to that category last year.

He made impact plays that jumped off the screen, rookie or not.  He also spent time off the field with injuries and had his share of mistakes.  So he may not be an "impact player" until he gets more consistent with his best play.

I'd rather sign a 26 year Leveon Bell then a 30 year old Brown, who is also a significant receiving threat. Baggage n' all.

Him and Aaron Jones would be a hell of a dual threat. And Rodgers could use Bell in a number of ways besides a RB.

Jaire's highs were very high, but his consistency and health were his big issues. He looked like a rookie making some mental mistakes, but overall I think his body of work was impressive. Now that he's adjusted to the speed of the game I expect him to continue to improve and be a lock down CB.

So you are basically agreeing with what I actually said but in the form of disagreeing.

"I think Jaire will be one in 2019"

Alexander is a stud.  He was covering the opposing team’s number 1 with crap help from the safeties.  With King and Breeland our most of the season and Jackson lost back there it is understandable that a rookie would have some brain farts.

Bill Belichick complimented Jaire before the game vs. the Pats. Singled him out by name during Belichicks presser.

This guy is a really good football player, and I think he’s got a great future in the league,” Belichick said. “I think he’ll be one of the top corners in the game for quite a while here.

https://packerswire.usatoday.c...jaire-alexander/amp/

Belichick said the former Louisville star was one of the top players on the Patriots’ draft board.

“He’s a great kid. He’s got great energy,” Belichick said. “He loves football and has great football skills; fast, athletic, good hands, good ball skills, can tackle, can play inside in the slot, can play outside on the perimeter, good zone vision, break on the ball, good man-to-man coverage, has good quickness, can match up with fast receivers, can match up with quick receivers.”

I'm going to go out on a limb & agree with Belichick here instead of "BrainDed"

Antonio Brown isn't going anywhere unless some major changes happen that he'd have to agree to. The cap hit would be $21.1 million.

I suppose it's possible he restructures his contract, but that would likely mean leaving $12.65 million on the table and/or trying to find a trade partner after June 1st and the draft/primary free agency period.

I saw a report that said Pittsburgh was willing to lose the $21million cap hit to get rid of Brown in a trade for draft picks and some other players. I think his price tag is too high for the Packers. No doubt he is a great WR, but not for us at what Pittsburgh would demand for him.
