After waiting56 minutes to achieve my goal of gloating over the demise of the 49ers I started thinking about what the Packers would need to do get get Rodgers another shot in the big game I had these thoughts in no paticular order or priority but I suspect very critical to their chances.

1. Run defense.  I was quite dissapopinted that the Packer run defense was horrid after the opener and well disciplined running teams cleaned the Packers clock time and again.

2. Number Two WR or a really good One B.  I think this goes w/o saying.  I like Lazard but somewhere  you need a field stretching WR and currenly GB lacks this weapon.

3. Offensive line.  This might seem an odd choice for a high priority but it seened to me that GB seemed to have more interior pressure than I have been accustomed to seeing and Gb's inability to stem it in critical moments.

Possible Solutions:

Run defense.  In the aftermath of the NFC Championship game I heard form my Packer freinds scattered all over the US and it is funny, one of the things that polarized them was Rashan Gary.  A couple of my friends thought why not move Gary to ILB (ala Clay a few years ago).   I looked at his combine numbers and at 278 lbs he ran a 4.58 40.  A drop to 260 or so and he would probably run in the high 4.4After was he would be one of the faster ILBs in the league and he would have enough sand in his pants to really help the run game.  Surprisingly, a really large group of my friends though that Gary should gain 15 pounds and replace TYler Lancaster.   He would be still one of thge faster 3-4 ends in the league but I don't know if he is the brute strong guy that that job requires in he NFL.

I am undecided on Gary it seems funny everybody  wants a change in his body profile so I guess we will just have to wait and see what he looks like in the 1st OTA.  If he is skinny the he is an ILB if he is chunky then he is a DE, if he is the same who knows?   I have beeen a huge fan of K. Murray from Oklahoma all season but feared he would never last till 30.  Now he is not the second coming of Ray Lewis but he would add some greatly needed speed to the 2nd level of the defense.  With LSU's win in the Champioship game  Patrick Queen is the new sexy kid on the block and his early selection might push Murray to a level reachable by GB.

After watching Mike Pennel really provide quality snaps for KC it makes me think that GB could possibly go this route and find a solid rotational guy, and expecting Lancaster to improve  rather than fattening up Gary.

2.  WR.  It seems obvious that GB will spend a premium pick (1 or 2) on what is an extremely deep WR class.  Of course Juedy and Lamb will be long gone but even if they were all available ( and I really love Jerry Jeudy he reminds me so much of Greg Jennings ) I would prefer Henrey Ruggs because he possess the field tilting speed that GB really needs.  He is also certainly gone by 30 which makes me supsect that GB might wait till rd 2 and get someone like Hambler from Penn State.  He would be a much faster version of Randall Cobb but those small hands give me pause because of cold weather games in GB.

3. Offensive Line.  The annual Brian Bulaga saga is up for chapter 5.  WE all know his Rx he hs a good year an injured year and then a good year.  This might be  the time GB says goodbye.  This would probably require a premium pick to solve and there are many I like this year that might slide into rd 2 including J. Jones from Houston and A. Jackson from USC.  I also like I Wilson from Georgia but he is most likely a Guard when he moves up.

So I guess my qusetion after all this is what do you think GB will do ti improve the team.  I threw out the fantasy solutions of big money FA's like Corey Littleton and so on because unless they play for the love of the game GB can't afford them!

To me the number one number one A and number one B is to get Rodgers some play makers.  That offense desperately needs 2-3 guys with speed who can press the defense downfield.  Get a TE who can truly consistently work the middle of the field and a running mate for Adams and watch this offense take off.

Defensively, I think they have to truly fix the ILB position and DE.  They are desperately thin at ILB and at DE they have rotational guys starting.

As for Gary why not put his hand in the dirt and have him play DE?  I didn't follow him to much in college but did he play mostly DE?

IMHO this team is not that far off from being even better than last year.  Aggressive GM, really good young coach, and some good talent on that roster.  I for one cannot wait!

I think Gary's athletic ability would be wasted with his hand in the dirt.  Maybe ILB though that would make him a very tall ILB at 6'5.  While bringing his kind of athleticism to ILB is an exciting thought, you probably add another year or two of development for him to learn that position.  Let him continue learning Z's position first and see where he his coming out of camp in the fall.

I believe in what you are saying for all of it - but i don't like moving Gary away from what he is.  We are one injury away from being mediocre there, learn that position and spell those 2 smith's and maybe we come up with packages that use all 3...anyways that's gary.  I see us taking a dl with the top pick, the run defense is the thing, 96,95 aren't going to cut it, we need a big fatty up there, even thinking about a'shawn robinson from det...ILB i think we will draft and sign someone, same with TE.  WR is interesting, I think 2-3 round pick will be a wr, only because of depth, but that could change if everyone makes a run on wr.  there are a ton of wr's that are FA's also.  When we cut Graham, maybe even Linsley, we will have a lot of room to make deals.  I think Lucas Patrick can play C.

Raekwon should be there at the end of round 1. His numbers have dropped since Alabama's top season 2 years ago, but he might be the answer at DT/DE.

Some newer articles/reviews on Davis point to his lack of development the past two years, which raises a red flag on his draftability in the earlier rounds. He could, and probably will slide into the 2nd or 3rd round. Here is a good article on interior d-linemen in this year's draft.

There is no perfect team. Trying to build one by reaching for need is a sure step toward Brownsville.

One way to counteract a strong running game is to get out in front so they HAVE to pass. Rather than try to fill needs (3 down ILB, elite D-line run stuffer) with reaches in this draft, I'd get the uncoachable speed at WR and depth/future at O-line that are pretty deep this draft. Kick the tires on free agent fits but draft talent.

I am still hopeful that AR can catch  MVP lightning again.

I thought Wisconsin was playing Notre Dame, but this came out regarding the schedule for next year...

NFL teams don't have much control over the schedule but Packers president Mark Murphy said he made two requests for early in the season that would put them on the road for consecutive weeks at the end of September/beginning of October because of Wisconsin-LSU at Lambeau Field on Oct. 3 and the Ryder Cup the previous week at Whistling Straits. "For the Wisconsin game we said the facility wasn't available and for the Ryder Cup we requested to be on the road," Murphy said at the combine.
