Can't remember the last time Packers had ILB as athletic as #7...and then pair him next to DC...

Really looking forward to seeing them in action...
IF Q. Walker pans out, it changes everything for Barry the DC. A big part of the cat n mouse game was matching personnel for the next play. Offense trots out THIS package and then Barry responds with THAT defensive package.

In the past, that meant a lot of dime on passing downs and that light package invites the run. Packers got gashed vs the run in dime personnel and teams knew that if they put 11 personnel on the field, Barry would often respond with dime

However, IF you have athletic ILBs, you don't have to be right as much when guessing on personnel. You stay in your nickle D, comfortable with the ILBs handling pass/run with equal aplomb.

It also makes it harder on the offense -  who are always trying to catch you in unfavorable personnel packages and make you pay. By having uber-athletic ILBs, it lessens the need for substitutions and you can handle the hurry-up offense.

The other part of the ILB equation is that when you pressure a QB, he'll often look for a quick checkdown - and here again- having athletic ILBs allows your defense to stuff those checkdowns before they get a 1st down

Generally speaking - ILBs are a dime a dozen except for the very rare ones that are difference-makers... and GB rarely got a shot at those guys drafting late.

One of the reasons Q. Walker "dropped" to 18 was that his role in college was as a clean-up specialist and weak side protector. Walkers job was to make the other guys "right" and let them hunt. Makes sense when you have the Georgia DL and Nakobe Dean.

Now Walker will be asked to make plays, stuff runs and turn it loose. Packers scouts think he can do that, other teams had some concerns over his instincts and projecting that skill set to Quay Walker. We'll soon see if the Packers personnel department was right and if Barry / Olividotti can coach him up.

Packers have been repping a lot of 4 DL, 2 LB and 5 DB...but #7 has been dropping into coverage so essentially dime.

I know he's a rookie, but I am looking forward to #7 covering elite TE like Kelce and Kittle...I think it gives us something we have not had before, and is a more favorable matchup than a S on TE.

Now, that is one big dime DB. Good luck running against that, NFL.

Against the blitz? Oh watch out, he's starting to get it.

Yup
That tracks with all of the scouting reports on young Jordan. He's not like Mahomes or Favre - guys that can make something happen without studying or outside of the design of the play. Those guys shine immediately

However; once Love understands it and can let his skills shine through - the dude has a hell of an arm and incredible touch on his passes.

Exciting to see Love "starting to get it" and the game is slowing down for him
We've often talked about how long it takes for WRs to assimilate an NFL offense;  its an even steeper climb for a young QB trying to throw with anticipation instead of waiting for the WR to come free ( which is too late) .

i am getting mildly p.o'd with all the friggen ad's these guys are trotting out there...youtube and podcasts...time to drop some more listening to not have to hear about manscaping or nutribars whatever the cripes...

Reminds me of the initial glee with cable tv.  NO ADVERTISEMENTS……or so we thought.  πŸ€¬ 🀬 🀬  I damn near DVR everything and watch later so I can fly through the ads.

From SI

"the Packers haven’t run a single snap of dime defense (one linebacker, six defensive backs) during this camp. They ran dime personnel 24 percent of the time last season, according to Sports Info Solutions"

Net result: The Packers are swapping out Henry Black and replacing him with Quay Walker on about 300 snaps. That's a significant upgrade...

To be fair, Walker won't get all of those snaps...but still...

Lets also keep in mind Love is 6 months younger than Kenny Pickett who was a 1st round pick this year.  Love's 2 years behind AR are infinitely more educational than anything Pickett will have.
