Good read. Couple of take aways from the article:

"Bad faith actors espousing scorching hot takes to draw in as many eyeballs as possible. The space that was once dominated by gentlemen like Frank Deford, Paul Zimmerman, Dick Enberg, and Rick Reilly, has now been replaced by carnival barkers and braying asses who just want to stand out from the rest of the ooze in the fetted pond of national sports commentators long enough to grab a few bags of money from corporate entities who sold their souls years ago."

This is soooo true. It's about clicks to generate revenue.  I'd put Skippy in this category as well.  I sometimes wonder if they really believe their "hot takes", or if it's just a script they've created that they insist on following.

"And, these entities have found that the most effective way to retain audiences to these decaying structures (ie - old media like ESPN, terrestrial radio) is by pissing off as much of their audience as they possibly can."

This reminded me of a scene from the Howard Stern movie Private Parts.

Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes.

Pig Vomit: How can that be?

Researcher: Answer most commonly given? "I want to see what he'll say next."

Pig Vomit: Okay, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?

Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day.

Pig Vomit: But... if they hate him, why do they listen?

Researcher: Most common answer? "I want to see what he'll say next."

What I consider to be 'traditional' media has been in a persistent vegetative state for quite a few years, and despite life support, death is inevitable.

When the generation born in the 1960's dies off, children raised in the digital age will replace the Baylesses and Cowherds of the world, and I shudder at the thought of what sports media will be from that point forward.

I imagine it being much closer to Jerry Springer than SportsCenter.

The 'crawl' on Fox Sports today read that Watson's camp had been negotiating with the League's camp to determine how many games he would be suspended.
Reportedly, the League wanted 12 games; Watson wanted 6 games max.

That stinks to holy hell and back. I suppose it's possible that it has always existed but never publicized (revealed?), I've never heard of player punishments being negotiated.

Not to mention 6 games seems a little on the light side...

Breaking news: Watson is a POS.

Watson is as remorseful as Haslam was when he was caught in the trucking scandal!  Both of them scumbags.

it chaps my ass that Brady is probably going to skate.

Nah, don't chap over that chump

Brady is the most prolific cheater of all time and everything he ever accomplished was through cheat & deceit. His Rings are all tainted, his Titles are stained and he can never out - run the fact that he and his team cheated in every game they ever played. Its an indisputable fact

So he's not skating from anything. He'll wear that yoke forever.
Of course there will always be legions of fans and media willing to lick his cheatin balls, but they don't matter.

The masses are asses...and Brady is a lifelong cheater.

I heard this board loves walls of text.

1. DEFINITION. The term tampering, as used within the National Football League, refers to any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL.

2. PURPOSE. The purpose of the NFL Anti-Tampering Policy, as it applies to tampering with players, is to protect member clubs’ contract and negotiating rights, and, at the same time, to allow the intra-League competitive systems devised for the acquisition and retention of player talent (e.g., college draft, waiver system, free-agent rules under an operative collective bargaining agreement) to operate efficiently. As the Policy applies to tampering with non-players, its purpose is to strike a balance between protecting the rights and maintaining the organizational stability of employer clubs, and providing realistic advancement opportunities for employees if other clubs desire their services.

So it seems like Tom Brady can call the 31 other GMs in the league and be like "Hey, I'm Tom Brady... and I'm sick of this Tampa Bay shit. We've won just one Superb Owl in 2 years, which is pathetic by my standards, I mean I wasn't even in the second one. And it's really hard to do TB12 Yoga when Coach Arians waddles by and you're worried he's gonna fall over and flatten you into a pancake. What can you offer TB12, the greatest and most handsome athlete of all-time?"

And he's good. But the only acceptable answer for the 31 GMs is to say something to the effect of "Sorry per the NFL Tampering Policy we can't discuss anything like that with you" and hang up.

What if Tom/Sean call each other...

"Hey Tom, we should team up... ya know, like the Avengers, and go to I don't know, let's say Miami"

"Wait Sean, didn't you only win one Super Bowl, and I mean there were like 10+ that I didn't win and you didn't even win all of those why would I play for you?"

"Well I did put bounties on all the non-TB12 QBs in the league. And I can do that again!"

"Well Sean I do like the sound of that, and I'm perfectly okay with Miami paying a penalty of a few draft picks that they would probably waste on QBs as if I can't play indefinitely by harvesting the blood and stem cells of the young, so I'm in!"

Hey, that looks like a 2-way tampering street! But, I don't think that it actually is. Because they're not doing it for their own 'club'.  Unless there's some link proving that Miami is orchestrating the whole deal in which case Miami is probably guilty of one to two counts of tampering.

What about Derek Carr and Davante Adams? By the letter of the law, Derek's "broooo wouldn't it be so cool if we played together here and we lived next door and we tore down the picket fence between our yards and live kinda like in that Big Love show?" schtick probably constitutes tampering.

But, if you want to try to make that case you probably don't give in and trade Davante. You let him hold out and then make the accusation that he's refusing to play for you because he essentially has an offer from Vegas via Carr's tampering.

I'm guessing GB was happy enough to move on from an aging receiver for a pretty good draft-pick haul anyway, so why not leave well enough alone?

As a practical matter, players are pretty brainless, and they're not going to prosecute "bro we should totally play together" scenarios. The NFLPA would probably go apeshit. Coach/GM/Owner are going to be held to a higher standard here.

Also as a practical matter, I think if a player initiates the inappropriate contact with another team, say the owner or GM or coach or whoever. Assuming that contact wants to go shady, and doesn't blab anything to the rest of the team, you can tamper all day and get away with it.

Wow, this writer really hates cowheard! https://packerstalk.com/2022/0...amp-madness-commence

That’s an excellent piece. I concur 100% Cowherd is always underestimating and dissing the Pack, and he always ends up being wrong. I can’t stand most of the sports talk radio guys. They say a lot of stupid and outrageous things. Just change the channel instead of feeding their ratings and egos!

Honestly, the only talk radio show I really enjoy is Rich Eisen’s show. He at least talks like a respectful adult, and not a pimple-assed punk.

Many of the panel shows on NFL network are good, too. But most of those radio shows are just unlistenable imho.

Having worked in tv news for many years, I am just sick by some of the crap being spewed over the air and online.

RW, it often seems like he is trying to play the bad guy in WWE. I feel sorry for credible journalists (maybe like yourself) who have to compete against these clowns.
