Whelan's hang time is ridiculous. Only save about $1M by cutting him...this is obviously about the future. O'Donnell will never be a Pro Bowler...Whelan just might be. He has the only thing you can't coach...leg strength.

He can kick the piss out of that ball.  Pretty good with touch kicks too it seems.

They save 2 million in cap space. That might be part of it.

Bojorquez had similarly leg strength, but was likely the worst holder in the league. I haven't kept track of how Whelan has looked as a holder.

$2m and ERFA, which means the Packers easily retain his rights after this season, all they have to do is give him an offer and he can either take it or not play football.

O'Donnell would be an UFA and likely cost a lot more.  If Whelan and O'Donnell played similarly (looked that way in camp) they are always going to go younger and cheaper.

Kuuuuuuhn talked about this on the broadcast.

something to the effect “This is a real competition”

Good for him for having insider info.

I didn’t realize it was even on the radar until the game the other day

Dang that's bold. Cut the punter and keep an extra running back. We don't need to punt!

I haven't followed the punting but surprised he was beat out.

I went back and looked at all 3 pre-season box scores. O'Donnell was better in the 1st 2 games but Whelan clearly out kicked O'Donnell in the last game.   It will be interesting to see how this works out.

Just an interesting tidbit I noticed: Whelan stands 9 yards behind the LOS to punt; O'Donnell stands 10 yards. Automatically, Whelan picks up an extra yard, although he ends up closer to the LOS with a smaller bubble around him. He's had the room to do that so far. O'Donnell at 10 yards, has a much bigger clean bubble around him than does Whelan. I wonder if it were late in a close game and the other team was obviously setting up for a block if Whelan would drop back to 10 yards.

A downside is that if the blocking doesn't hold up, Gute will be putting in a quick call to O'Donnell.

It's a gamble for sure but there could be a hidden agenda. If Carlson is doing poorly the Packers could easily bring Crosby back. In the area where Crosby has faded over the years, Whelan has a skill set that O'Donnell doesn't. A strong leg on kick offs is a nice option. <Not only did Whelan punt during some of his workouts, he kicked off and attempted field goals. At one outing in San Diego, he reportedly hit field goals of 50, 55 and 60 yards.>

After the Packers released Pat O’Donnell, 31-year-old David Bakhtiari now becomes the “youngest oldest player on an active NFL roster”.

Packers down to 3 players over the age of 30 after today’s release of O’Donnell.

Bakhtiari - 31
Preston Smith - 30
Campbell - 30

Leavitt is the only 29 year old

Appears to be a very bold move. I can’t reveal my sources, but I’m told this really didn’t come down to his kicking skills. Turns out he hit on LeFleur’s wife one time. You just can’t do that!

Starting to resemble “Logan’s Run”.

I think a trade could be a possibility, but flat out cutting a ( for all intensive purposes ) starting-level LT is asinine.
Yosh has experience these young guys don't, and that's hard to replace with 2nd-year players.
However, if Walker has actually 'beat out' Yosh this preseason, then so be it.

I don't think Yosh is getting cut but maybe Royce Newman? Yosh is getting paid $4.3M this year.

There's plenty of speculation that Yosh will get traded. $4.3 is a lot of money for a swing OT. It's really a lot of money for a backup swing tackle since Walker has emerged. I think he got that contract with the assumption he would be a starting OT this year.

Somebody is already making the 53 and then getting moved to IR since the Packers cut their LS to facilitate this move. I would not be surprised if the Packers kept 7 WRs and the put Wicks on IR. It could be Moore or Ballentine also.

I think this roster is being built for the long haul. The Packers aren't going to lose players they know they can develop into very good players by next year. That strategy definitely looks like it worked with Walker. With Rodgers' buddies no longer taking up 3-4 roster spots there is more flexibility to do that. With an up and coming roster like this is it better to keep a guy like Cox or a Mercedes Lewis/Randall Cobb type player?
