Local media just teased a Cam Newton to the Bears trade discussions. Will see if there's any more to it. One rumoreearlier was trubitchsky could be included to back up/compete with Allen. Panthers also possibly one of the teams that would look at Kaepernick

Would definitely upgrade the bares qb situation but technically so did the Cutler trade

Only problem is Cam's cap number is $21M and, right now, the Bears only have $14M in cap space in 2020...that's before rookie pool or resigning UFA's/RFA's. Shipping off Trubisky would free up another $9.2M, so it could work BUT they will either have to extend Kyle Long by March or exercise his 2020 option which would hit their cap at $9.6M. So really they HAVE to let UFA's like Trevathan, HHCD, Aaron Lynch, and Nick Kwiatkowski walk AND sign Cam to a new deal. Not unreasonable, just kind of a blow to defensive depth. They also have contracts for Eddie Jackson and Leonard Floyd coming up, which won't be cheap and those guys could choose to hold out while Chicago is on the ropes financially.

I've heard recurring bits on local radio so far this season suggesting the current FO sees a "win now" situation because of what they have assembled on D.  They've made crazy moves before like what they did to get Trubisky.  I wouldn't be shocked if they did whatever it would take to get Cam if they really think he would get them over the hump at QB.  Would take some humility too in admitting the Trubisky move was bad, this quickly.

I think the Bores were trying to approximate the Ravens style of football; dominating defense and just enough offense. A concept not unfamiliar to them, but they haven't been able to replicate it for....what, 35 years now?

I don't know if Scam is the guy to lead such a team. No doubt he's far ahead of anybody currently on their roster, but he has as much downside as he does upside at this point in his career.

First and foremost among them is a lisfranc injury. I thought that most players who have had this injury had met their doom (Cedric Benson, anyone?), but this report says otherwise.
However, a couple of years later, this report from same source seems to totally contradict.
I hope any of our resident doctors can comment and/or likely give a much better interpretation.

In any case, I would think Scam would want a contract to be guaranteed for injury, and would be too great a risk for me personally to make.
The Bores? Well....they still suck!

The Bears gave up 3 good picks to move up ONE SPOT for Trubisky. They gave up the equivalent of 3-4 more high picks to get Mack. They have up a 4th rounder next year to move up 14 spots for Montgomery. They have only 6 picks next year (Round 2, 5, 6, 6, 7) and only one in the top 150 picks or so. So they have no salary cap space and no picks to trade for next year.

The Trubisky trade may end up being the worse trade in NFL history given what they gave up to move up 1 spot to #2 to draft a Trubisky in a draft where two potential Hall of Fame QBs were drafted at #10 and #12.

2017 draft-pick No. 2: Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina

Bears traded

2017-3: 49ers — Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

2017-67: Saints — Alvin Kamara, RB, Tennessee (via 49ers)

2017-111: Seahawks — Tedric Thompson, S, Colorado (via 49ers)

2018-70: 49ers — Fred Warner, LB, BYU

What gets me about this is that the tradeup was UNNECESSARY, and they spooked themselves to believe the Niners were gonna trade that pick to someone else to take their guy and I believe no way the Niners were going QB in that draft.

Article in Chicago Tribune recently. It's really amazing how badly most scouts missed on Mahomes. His closest comparison physically is Favre - except with what seems to be all the good stuff without the idiotic decisions.

https://www.chicagotribune.com...7azbtdw6m-story.html

In mid-November of the quarterbacks’ third seasons, the statistical comparisons are startling.

  • Trubisky: 35 starts (including one playoff start), 7,109 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, 22 interceptions, an 87.2 rating and a 19-16 record.
  • Mahomes: 27 starts (including two playoff starts), 8,580 passing yards, 71 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, a 111.5 rating and a 19-8 record.
  • Watson: 32 starts (including one playoff start), 8,531 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, a 102.7 rating and a 20-12 record.

He wouldn't have Andy, so you really never know.

Good point, Reid having been around Favre when Favre first got to Green Bay probably helped a lot with Mahomes.

But you only have to see Mahomes throw a couple of times to see that he is immensely more physically talented than Trubisky. Trubisky's ceiling is probably a top 20 NFL QB. Mahomes arm strength is transcendent. Of course, Jamarcus Russell had a monster arm as well and we see how far that got him.

Not true. Trubitchsky only started 13 games. Not sure where you got those stats from. Watching alot of acc football it wasn't hard to see the stats he did have came in a Larry fedora spread offense where he dumped the ball off short and got credit for yac. Should've been an easy call for scouts but being a sharp looking Caucasian kid must be important

Pretty clear they are NFL stats since they include playoff starts for Trubitski and Mahommes.

I took that paragraph right out of the Chicago Tribune article that was linked above it.

Ryan Pace & the Bear org are complete idiots & most of us said so at the time of the "trade up" one spot with the Niners.

Sitting at the 3rd overall pick they had their choice of Trubisky, Mahomiez or Watson.

I mean....as a Packer fan I'm laughing.....but it's a miracle these guys get paid millions to royally screw up a franchise.

Supposedly Trubisky has a "hip problem" which is obviously complete bullshit.

It's not just the Trubisky trade. The Bears traded up 14 spots in the 3rd round to take Montgomery this year (moved to 73rd pick from the 87th pick)  and gave up a 4th round pick next year. Montgomery seems like a decent back, but there are probably a lot of similar backs that you could find in free agency at mid-level prices rather than give up a good pick to move up for a guy that might still be 14 picks later.

Both the Trubisky and Montgomery trades reek of Mike Sherman level BJ Sander level panic. In both cases, he might have gotten the same guy for no extra draft picks.
