It's (rightly) no longer acceptable to think of gays as icky, so same-sex marriage is something we give the government imprimatur to. Those fundie Christians, however, are still icky, and woe betide the person who thinks of them as not icky, so how dare anybody accept the idea of government-sanctioned plural marriage!
It's the same sort of thing as Chuck Schumer going after a caffeinated alcoholic beverage like Four Loko because the icky Snooki Class drank such stuff, while nobody would think to go after Irish coffee, because a higher class of people drink that.
