The guess is that both Kimbrel (and Keuchel for that matter) are still holding out for something like the long term contracts they both wanted in the winter. Their agents probably want to save face as well.

Keuchel has been rumored to have been offered 15 million on a one year deal but has yet to bite.

Kimbrel originally wanted 6 years and 100 million. Keuchel was rumored to have been holding out for 5 years and about the same yearly salary. In both cases, the agent (in Keuchel's case, Scott Boras) badly miscalculated the market.

Until June 1 if a team signed him they would have owed draft compensation.

Kimbrel and Kuechel might be options but both would need probably at least a month in the minors to get back to MLB speed and location after not doing anything since last season.

My guess is MKE doesn't make a move on either. Probably going to see if they can get some of the pen arms going, like Burnes. And with Anderson and Nelson hopefully taking spots int eh rotation that will push some others into the pen.

Plus the money.....

True, ATM. I'm just thinking of the playoff run, and keeping him away from our competitors in the division. Man, losing Corey hurt. That was quite a weapon, having 3 quality closers last year in Knebel, Jeffress and Hader. We sure could use that again. I think signing Kimbrel would be a major coup, but it would be an expensive venture for sure. No doubt.

He wasn't going anywhere before June 2nd. Now, there is a line out the door vying for his services. Gotta have pitching to win the whole enchilada. I wish they would just do it, but, its not my money.

Maybe they are targeting a younger arm, less expensive, for a possible move at the trade deadline...

Going on day 2 with compensation having been removed. Would be exciting for the Crew, but I get the feeling it will be Philly or the Braves.....would be a bummer to see one of the obscene-big-payroll-over-spenders(Dodgers or Cubs) sign him.

Great move for Cubs. Now they have another at times dominant pitcher for majority of the duration of their window.

Would have been nice to 1) have a more reliable arm than the majority of the pen and 2) kept him from our main division rival.

Nelson got shelled tonight which isn’t a good sign.

He had pitched decently in Triple A. I'd give him 2-3 starts to really make a determination. But, maybe it would have been better to let him throw a couple of innings in a situation like last night (the 16-0 loss) before making a start?

I recall a lot of people being all POd when the Cubs signed Darvish.  Not to suggest Kimbrell is Darvish but I’m also not sure he’s the same lights out version either.  For a short term deal he’s probably worth looking at and who knows if the Brewers were serious or not.

The Brewers do need to improve their bullpen.  Let’s see what they do in the next couple of months.

What else can you say?  Stearns will not make that kind of signing.  He just won’t.  But the guy has been good with most other moves.  Much like TT before he got senile you have to trust Stearns.

I have to say I wouldn't have been sad if the Crew got Kimbrell (or Dallas) but I have to say it would worry me that the guy hasn't pitched in a game since the World Series. I also would be leery of a three-year deal.

I also fully expect Stearns and Mark A to be very active from now until the deadline.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I do feel that he's earned his street cred just like Horst or Gutey. Stearns has done a fantastic job of acquiring talent within budget. I'm thinking Will Smith LHP SF will be one of his top targets before the trade deadline. Former Brewer who is lighting it up, and would be a great add to our bullpen. A quality reliever would really help Hader & Jeffress.

Pitching wins championships. No team can win the whole enchilada without it.

All I know is this Brewers team does look "all-in" this season, and they appear to be just sitting back, very discerningly to make their "best" moves. Plenty of baseball left to play, and many trade possibilities. I read Thor is going to be available too.

They probably wanted to wait and see if Nelson/Gio/Chacin/Peralta could bring their games back before jumping on high dollar Keuchel/Kimbrel. Chase Anderson has looked to have come along nicely, and I really, really liked the Gio signing. Might need another quality starter, but they do have time to figure that out. They appear to really need another closer to help carry the load. Barnes/Burnes/Claudio/Albers have really struggled out of the pen.

Good take. I actually think the starting pitching is OK right now. Davies has been spectacular and Woodruff and Anderson have exceeded expectations as well. As long as Gio can eat up some innings they should be OK. Nelson would be gravy if he could be an average 5th guy.

The bullpen is where they need some help. Right now, if you had a must win game to get into the playoffs, who would you trust in the bullpen. The list would probably begin and end with Hader and Jeffress,  although Junior Guerra has been solid. The guy they really need is Burnes. He looked like a future all-star last year and might be the worst pitcher in the NL (at least statistically) so far this year. They need that multi-inning guy from the bullpen to keep them in games and I guess the only option this year has been Guerra.

I agree with you Mich on Burnes. Thinking he may be better off going back down to AAA to get his groove back. He has coughed up a ton of opportunities. Also, Junior Guerra is looking like a very reliable reliever. I dig his play this year.

Music City, Brad Hand and/or Trevor Bauer would be awesome adds to our bullpen/rotation as well. Cleveland is reeling right now and could easily become sellers.

Starting to wonder how all-in we can be? Could we add Max Scherzer via trade? 2 1/2 years of team control remaining at $30M/year. I wonder if Atanasio would go for it? Natinals will be sellers...

Kind of stoked to see what Deolis Guerra can do on the Brewers after getting the call up. Our bullpen could use a success story...

(edit) WOW. Ha. Roll outside for a smoke... "yeah, Hon, Brewers up 6-1!" Back down to the lounge what felt like an hour later. Still playing, 6-6 top of 10th. I was like, wtf?  Just saw box, Deolis Guerra...

"Son, that's not the way we do it here... er, uh, I mean... uh...."

Man, I'm hoping like hell we snap Will Smith up before Boston gets him.... should do a monster package for both he and MadBum. Get it done. I know Stearns wants years of control, but, I don't see Atanasio wanting to pay for the premium talent out there.

Kind of in a pickle, as Smith will cost them a good amount, and then they need an Ace starter on top of it. Guess there are a few other closers out there. If Smith is too costly or gets traded before we can get him, Sam Dyson might not be a bad option in the pen, and he's got team control through the 2020 season.

The only thing keeping the Brewers in any sort of race is just how poor the National League is as a whole.  They stumbled into the All Star break last year and recovered.  That said, as a whole they just look like they've dropped a couple notches from last year.   Bullpen is worse, starting pitching worse, avg. with runners in scoring position is worse.  This team just hasn't looked like a very good team for the majority of the first half of the season,

Yeah Fightphoe93, adding Grandal was great, and Moose, but we needed a real Ace starter added to our roster, and that has yet to happen. The experiment worked with Wood, but Peralta and Burnes had a rough first half. Add Nelson struggling to find his way, along with the loss of Corey Knebel, and now both starting and relief pitching are a dire need if we are to advance. We've had others struggle at the plate as well, compounding our troubles.

However, I believe Atanasio knows this is his shot, and Stearns is looking to see it through with his best work. Should be fun to see who we add for pitching help, and I do think our bats will return. Gio's return should be some big help too, as will a good showing by Dubon. That will get interesting if he shows well at SS when Arcia is healthy enough to return.

I'm not giving up on this season. You're right, we've been fortunate the rest of our division has sucked balls through all of this...

Really want them to get Scherzer, as he's under team control till 2021. That could help us make multiple runs at this. If Atanasio pops for him at $30M, that would be amazing for the Brewers and Milwaukee.

Corbin Burnes starting the season looking like he was throwing at the home run derby is the biggest surprise in all this. He looked like a future star in the playoffs last year and started the season giving up 11 HRS in his first 18 innings. That started a domino effect (especially without Knebel and with Jeffress also missing the first 20 games) that they haven't recovered from

To me, they've really screwed up with Burnes.  That guy should be starting every 5 days in AAA until he is dominant there for a sustained period.  I don't think having him come out sporadically from the bullpen is doing him any favors in terms of development.

Really disappointing, but, the kid could turn things around. Couldn't get any worse for him. He is a pitcher with solid stuff, at least in 2018. Maybe he finds it again, as well as Freddie.

We've got an interesting road left here. Maybe Jesus finds his swing that was like a surgeon last year before the All-Star break. Maybe Gio comes back effectively. Maybe Attanasio  realizes what he bought with Cain, Yelich, Moose and Grandal, and sees his window to make that investment pop requires more jack...

Stearns wants pitchers with team control, but, we don't have enough chips, or, rather, we'd have to empty the farm, and Attanasio would have to commit to throwing monster coin to finish the job. I'm hoping he sees that. Winning a WS would bring those monies back tenfold.

I will be floating on a ****ing cloud if Stearns lands both an Ace starter and a quality closer. That's what we need to finish this out.

I think guys like Moose, Grandal, Yelich, Hiura, Woodruff, and probably Braun and Davies have exceeded expectations.

Hader, Anderson, Thames, Gio, Gamel, Arcia, Jeffress, Albers and probably Guerra have played about the level we expected or in the met expectations category.

Then you have the rest of the group namely Aguilar, Peralta, Nelson, Burnes, Chacin, Cain, Shaw, and Pina that have performed lower or much lower than expectations.

Suter and Knebel and Perez aren’t in the discussion.

The bottom line is the Brewers banked on the younger starters and hoped Nelson would return to form and it didn’t happen.

It’s actually somewhat encouraging they are still in the mix as their 1st half performance overall would not suggest they’d be there.
