Being the 5th overall pick certainly sharpened the criticism directed his way.

If you ever watched his play at Ohio State….you were like me and no doubt were jumping up and down when the Packers drafted him. He was a beast.  His steady, but never great play again demonstrates how hard it is to predict success in the NFL.

I appreciate all he did here and hope he has a joyous CTE free post-football life.

Someone today compared Hawk to Brian Noble and I just about puked up a lung

Hawk was an OK player for a few years but he really sucked and was stealing money the last 2-3 years

ROTTT

Get us some backers TT and I will Fed EX you a case of Bud Light.  Iowacheese will send the ice

LOL!  For a moment I thought you were serious.

I bet he ends up in Oakland.  That team is in need of positive locker room influences to get the young guys on the right path.  It makes sense with McKenzie there.  He'd sign for the vet minimum and likely be a backup.  But he would give young guys like Sio Moore and Khalil Mack someone to model themselves after off the field.  Between him, Woodson and Justin Tuck, every level of the defense would have a vet leader.  Of course, if Hawk actually has to play.....uh oh.

Unwarranted criticism.  He didn't pick himself at #5.  Keep in mind we still ran the 4-3 back then.  He's no HOF, but missing only 2 games in 9 years is what you want out of a 1st round pick, and I'd take that every time.  Compare him to Bustin Harrell at #16 the following year, it's not even close.

People are way too hard on Hawk's draft position,  career, and what he did for the team.  That said, I fully agree it was time to move on.

That's bulls**t.  If he was a 7th round pick and played like he did last year, the criticism would have been the same.  Just look at Brad Jones.  And remember when Jarrett Bush was starting?  Guy was crucified on this board and he was an undrafted free agent.  Same with MD Jennings.  If you start in the NFL and suck, you will get heavily criticized by fans.  I actually felt Hawk got off easy b/c he was such a good guy.

Yes, Hawk was a disappointment based on his draft position.  You expect more of a top 5 pick.  But he was a very below average player for the last three years.  That's a fact that has nothing to do with his draft position.

EDIT: For the record, I don't consider him a bust (whatever that word means).

And yet, the coveted Assistant HC Winston Moss did nothing in developing him past his above average season in 2010 nor did Capers or MM acknowledge what was known for years about Hawk that the rest of the NFL knew (e.g. Harbough, Carroll, Giants OC Gilbride). That Hawk couldn't play and that middle of the D was prime for the picking.

IMO that's where much of the angst/frustration/blame lies.  It seemed the entire league knew where GB's weak links were. And despite that, MM stubbornly trotted him and Jones out game after game. Week after week. Year after year.

That's not Hawks fault. That's about a coaching staff that refused to admit reality.

Well...better late than never.

I said the Packers defense would never improve with Hawk and/or Jones in the lineup, that they were both too damned slow (and, as  it turned out, Jones was as dum as he was slow) amongst their other failings.

And I don't harbor any ill feelings toward either of them. They were both good guys off the field, worked hard on it, and likely played the best they could. I think coaching failed them more than their lack of skill did, IMHO.

But, in any case, it's water under the bridge now, and I look forward to vast improvement to defensive team speed and ILB production.

Thanks, AJ! And best wishes for future successes.

Our defense just got faster.  Dom Campers just got smerter.

The legend of ROTTT lives on!!!!!!!!!!!

Would someone cue Diggr14 about how this pick was a sign that Uncle Ted might not be up to the job of GM?

Have a great day!!  I just did!

I wish AJ the best of luck in the future he was a good example of what "Packer People" is supposed to be.  But, it was time to move on.  His play had slipped to the point that he just couldnt get it done anymore.  It is sad to see but the NFL is a business and it sadly it was time.

TT is really in the wrong line of business, he should be in charge of all state secrets. Amazing.

More likely Hawk's become so irrelevant nobody bothered to ask.

It's stuff like this that makes me love being a Packers fan.  Such a class organization.  While some fans want more leaks because it shows TT/MM are doing stuff, I love that the Packers are NEVER in the media and we know nothing.  No news is good news in my book.  Always keep it in house.

My experience has been different-I've heard people b*tch about  the fact that he was the fifth overall pick throughout his career……and we'd have done better with Cromartie, Holmes Greenway or  Ngata----although their were several players in that first round much worse than Hawk…..Admirable that AJ Hawk played hurt and played so much in the middle---it made for a long an illustrious career….but his play was not the play you would expect from #5 overall ..that matters for something…in the same way that Sam Shields excellent play seems more sweet due to his undrafted beginning…. I am a labeling prejudger

Always enjoy Brandt, thx for posting

Kinda surprised they left the door open, but that may be just the Packers doing him a favor

as he considers his options with other teams
