The Green Bay Packers have reached the halfway mark of their formal preparation for the start of the regular season as a deep, established and talented team that has benefited from relatively good fortune on the injury front.

It's reflected on how the team's roster shapes up three weeks before opening night in Seattle.

A year ago on this date, the 90-man roster had 23 players judged to be locks to make the 53-man roster, and nine more considered good bets.

This year, there appear to be 28 locks and 12 good bets on an 89-man roster.

The increase from 32 to 40 players in the count-them-here category by mid-August suggests the Packers have their ducks in order even more than in most seasons as they bid to usurp the Seahawks as NFL champions.

"We'll be competitive, I'll tell you that much," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said early in the week. "We'll be in the mix."

Have to agree on the TE's. I think TT goes with 4 because of MM's love of TE's and those TE sets. With Lacy in the backfield, he could run an all TE set and confuse the defense quite nicely.

Offense

QB - Rodgers, Flynn (2)
HB - Lacy, Starks, Harris (3)
FB - Kuhn (1)
WR - Nelson, Cobb, Boykin, Adams, Jannis, Dorsey (6)
TE - Bostic, AQ, Rodgers, Taylor (4)
T - Bahk, Bulaga, Sherrod (3)
G - Sitton, Lang, Taylor (3)
C - Tretter, Linsey (2)

Defense

S - Dix, Hyde, Burnett, Richardson (4)
CB - Williams, Shields, Hayward, House, Goodson, Bush (6)
ILB - Hawk, Jones, Barrington, Lattimore (4)
OLB - Mathews, Peppers, Neal, Perry, Mulamba, Bradford (6)
DL - Daniels, Raji, Jones, Thorton, Boyd, Pennel{Guion on PUP} (6)

Specialists

K - Crosby (1)
P - Ginger (1)
LS - Goode (1)

The only place I struggled was with the 6th WR and the 6th OLB. If Guion isn't on PUP i think he takes that 6th OLD roster spot.

Looks about right.  The only spot I'd question is Dorsey, who I consider to be the last guy to make the roster.  I think that spot comes more down to talent, not position.  IMO, Tolzien has more NFL talent than Dorsey, so you keep Tolzien (and Dorsey probably slips through waivers to the PS).

My Updated 53.......

If you haven't read Tom Oates' column, I highly recommend it:

I agree with him.   While McCarthy says this may be the deepest WR corp, I don't think that's accurate.  They have the POTENTIAL to be the best WR corp, but most have very little experience, and Jordy seems to be having hammy problems more often than not.

Therefore, I firmly believe we should keep 6 on the roster.

My picks:

1.  Jordy

2.  Cobb

3.  Boykin

4.  Adams

5.  Janis.  I wouldn't be shocked if he moved higher during the season if he gets a chance and enough reps with Rodgers.

6.  This is really tough.  I think both Myles White and Kevin Dorsey have shown tremendous effort and some really good skills.  I'd say it's a toss-up.

How about the rest of you guys?

He looked very sure of himself tonight. Hyde is nice fall back option - 12.3 average as a rookie - but if he's going to be playing starter minutes he's probably too valuable to put in that position if there are other good options.

Thanks, Adbracadumdum.
