I just saw that a few minutes ago.  I do think that UW has the opportunity to do something special this year but, I think #3 is just too highly ranked.  Maybe because it seems like when expectations are so high the Badgers pee down their legs.  This bunch gives me a different vibe though and if they can win with a tougher schedule they could be special.  Anyhow, right now I still don't think they are better than Ohio State, Georgia and maybe even Penn State.

On other thoughts on the poll is that how does Michigan keep getting ranked so high?  Maybe it is my hate for that program but for a team that really has done much the last 15 years they do get a lot of love. (I feel that same about Notre Dame)

Ah, I heard some talking heads, probably on Dan Patrick show that Hairball is on the hot seat this year......he's got to start knocking off some big name schools to be kept on.  Good record, just not when it comes to the Clemson's, Ohio State, etc.

Isn't being on the cover of SI the kiss of death??

There are regional SI, different teams on covers in different parts of the country.

Bucky will be more balanced this year, with a really good offense and really good defense.  You just won't see the elite "best defense in the country" defense.

So SI has drawn the road map for the national  Championship, the best defensive line in the country, Clemson,  vs the best offensive line in the country Wisconsin.

just look at the size of those big boys up front

projected starters

LT Vanlanen  6'5  305  sophmore

LG Deiter   6'6   330  senior

C  Biadasz  6'3   310   sophmore

RG  Benzschawel   6'6   315   senior

RT  Edwards   6'7   305  junior

Betcha  I could run for a couple hundred yards behind that line

SKULLY   tailback   6'0   190    S E N I O R      WAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Receivers were lights out last year in the bowl, as was Horni.  There were times I forgot I was watching a WI offense.   If they're that good consistently they're a top 5 team.

I totally agree I couldn' t get over that was UW I was watching.  Another thing was at the Big Ten title game last year.  The UW receivers were wide open against the O$U secondary but Hornibrook didn't get the ball to them.  If he had they would have beaten OSU.

Could Hornibrook be really good this year.  If so, that offensive line with UW's usual stable of RB's.  How are the receivers this year?

Their WRs together are one of the most at talented groups in the B1G. Offensively they’re as talented as we have seen in a long time. Chryst has all the toys, now- and at RB it isn’t just Taylor. They have experienced guys, and some real talent coming up too. They’re going to put up numbers.

The question is the D. Thin at DL and young in the secondary. Lyles getting moved to DT helps, but they’re a couple injured away from trouble. Secondary really has taken it on the chin in back to back B1G Title games. 2016 it was jump balls, 2017 it was speed. They need to start putting it together in that game to take that true next step. But they’re more athletic now than in the past, and Leonhard will coach em up.

Stay healthy and they have a shot...

Historically the Badgers football program has not done well when they are ranked highly and expected to win.   The #3 ranking is well deserved but I’d rather they not have all that attention to start the year.

I also don’t like the fact their first conference game is on the road at Iowa.  Hopefully it’s not a night game.   They aren’t really going to be tested until that game.

Hornibrook is the wild card.  If he plays well this year they should be a legit contender. If not, with a much tougher schedule, they could be a 3-4 loss team.

Exactly and that is what has me concerned this year.  That and the schedule is going to really challenge this team.  Tjhey have to play at places that historically they havent done that well at @Iowa @NW, @ PSU, and @ Michigan which are all places the UW has not done well in the past.

I also think that Hornibrook and the defense are the two wild cards on this team.  If the Hornibrook we saw in the Orange Bowl shows up and Leonard can work his magic this group could be special.  But until I see it happen I will be very cautiously optimistic.

Hornibrook will throw interceptions, be ready for it.

In the past it didn't matter much, because the defense would just get another hold.  Like I said before, I think the defense will be good, but not best in the nation good like what we are used to.   On the flip side, with this running game and wide receiver set, the potential to score more is there too.

Pretty exciting, will be a fun season to watch.

They are probably more of a 15-20 ranked team than top 5.

Could look a lot like 2000.  Ended up 9-4 and ranked 21 after starting the year ranked 4 overall.

2012, 2008, 1994 they started the year ranked 13 overall or better and all 3 of those years ended the season unranked.  This is some of the history with this team and not living up to high expectations.  It hasn’t happened under Chryst but shouldn’t surprise anyone if they come back to reality a bit.

I really do think #18 is about right for this team I just couldn't totally buy in to the top 5 ranking.  Mostly because I knew deep down this would happen losing a game they shouldn't.

I do still believe deep down that UW is still going to make things interesting this year.  I think with the pressure off they can now get back to Badger football.  But that will all go down the tubes if they can't beat Iowa.
