Wow went to bed with a minute left in OT thinking UW had won. Incredible shot to beat them but you must set your defense to make the ball handler pass the ball instead of getting open court. Of course UF gave UW a gift by not fouling at the end of regulation. All the research shows that you are much better off fouling with less than 5 seconds left up 3.
Watched the final play again and again
What a gut wrenching way to lose after you crawled back and forced OT
I keep wondering if it was best to have Nigel make both throws (go figure) as had he missed the second one I'm not sure Florida has enough time to set up the play and execute.
As it was Hayes looked like he was afraid of fouling the guy and then you have Trice standing around looking completely lost. No way should that guy have gotten a clean look but he did.
I won't comment on the Iverson dunk or dunk attempt. Just a weak play overall and amazing to watch as it reminded me of Clinton Dix failing on the 2pt play against the Seahawks. Just like WTF was that.
Very exciting game and bummer they came up short. Have to reload next season.
Oh shoot.......hate to admit I did turn it off and went to bed......wake up to read here that it went into overtime. OMGOSH. Out of the whole game that "championship belt" move by Zac was A W E S O M E. Thanks Badgers great season....and Kobe King WILL be a force. He's got it. Go Badgers Go.
Agree with Oates- this one is probably a bigger heartbreaker than the title loss to Duke. Understand you don't want to foul on the last play but completely uncontested is inexcusable. Good run that unfortunately ended too soon.
WTF was Trices responsibility on the last play?
Agree, Pikes. I think Trice saw Hayes standing around looking confused. Then, instead of covering Allen, he broke out to cover Barry on the side. That left Hayes chasing Allen. I am sure Hayes thought someone was going to come up and pick up Allen....and why not? EVERYONE knew Allen was going to take the last shot. Trice looked like a lost freshman. I do think Trice regressed as the season went on...not sure why...but Trice was our fastest guy on the court at that time....he should've known Allen was his responsibility, not Barry. I think if BK was in the game and healthy, he would've been on Allen all the way and made that last shot more difficult.
Edit: It was Chiozza
Allen is one fast dude. Don't get the Badges defensive strategy on the last in bounds play.
I think Gard had a time out left also.....should have used it to get all on the same page
A thunderous dunk by Iverson would have been the icing. I don't understand why he seemed to be jogging down court like he was the only guy on the court. BK getting hurt and then them still getting to OT and taking control of the game in OT was improbable. The team leader could not do anything and they still found a way to almost do it. Hayes looked so gassed at the end. He really played well in the tournament. The fact that they have to think about the what if and see that play forever really sucks for them. This one was the Badger's game to have. They played well and persevered to get themselves into position to win, but......
Complete disarray and breakdown on defense on the last play is what I'll always remember about the game. With the benefit of hindsight he should have used the TO, but I understand his thinking at the time in not using it.
What was his thinking?
Not let Florida set up an offensive play.
In that case it worked
Florida has a TO there they use it. Gard just didn't want to give them that possible advantage.
This game was lost because the glaring weaknesses that the Badgers had all year did them in. The FTs didn't help, but Hayes did hit the 2 to put them up.
They lost because their bench players were atrocious all year. There is really no other word for it. They scored 83 points in an OT game with one of their starters missing the last 7 minutes after fouling out and another who was a shell of himself the last 6 minutes and the bench guys scored 3 points. 3. Iverson did grab 8 rebounds, but he was a liability on offense all year and if this was the NBA you've probably cut the entire bench and start over next year. Trice looked like a deer in the headlights. Jordan Hill, Iverson, and Trice were awful on defense in the last minute.
37 seconds left, Up 4, Jordan Hill fouls a guy on the perimeter
34 seconds left, Iverson puts up the softest breakaway shot you'll ever see
21 seconds left, Iverson lets a guy go by him for an uncontested layup
On the last play, what was Trice doing? Guarding Barry from taking a 35 foot shot? At least force the guy to his left (which is what Hayes did correctly in the back court).
Charles Thomas, Illikainen, Van Vliet - DNPs
Trice and Jordan Hill were awful all tournament. Think about the fact that Koenig couldn't move and they left him in because a 20% Koenig who couldn't elevate to shoot was better than any other option. If Koenig is playing Trice's spot on that last shot, there is no way it plays out like it did.
This senior class deserves a lot of acclaim. They didn't lose that game last night - the lack of impact from the recruiting classes of 2016 and 2015 did. That is going to be the potential downfall of this program. Did Bo just stop caring at some point? Is it a failure in their player development program? The 2015 class was supposed to be great. They are supposed to make a jump in their 2nd year. Iverson was actually the 4th rated guy from that recruiting class. Except for some contributions from Iverson, they all regressed to the point where they were complete liabilities.
2010 Recruiting Class: Gasser, Brust, Dukan, Evan Anderson
2011Recruiting Class: Kaminsky, Uthoff, Jordan Smith, T. Jackson, G. Marshall
2012 Recruiting Class: Dekker, Showalter
2013 Recruiting Class: Hayes, Koenig, J. Hill, Brown, Dearring
2014 Recruiting Class: Happ, Schlundt
2015 Recruiting Class: Illikainen, Pritzl, Thomas, Iverson, Van Vliet
2016 Recruiting Class: Trice, Aleem Ford
They have 1 great college player (Happ) from the last 3 recruiting classes and another solid contributor (Iverson). They have no one else they even trusted to play this year.
The 2017 class is supposed to be good. I wonder if we see Happ, Trice, Iverson, and 2 freshman start next year. Maybe some guys transfer out?

If they call timeout, the defensive priorities would be the following:
1. At all costs, make someone other than Allen beat you.
2. Make the guy who catches the ball catch it no deeper than FT extended.
3. Don't foul.
They got a situation where the backup PG who was 28 for 92 on the year (a lower percentage than Nigel Hayes shot) hit a running, off-balance, one-footed, floating 3 pointer. Does this release and balance look like a high percentage 20 foot shot? Feet splayed out, falling forward. I'm not sure what Trice was doing on this play, he could have at least gotten into the guys vision to give him something to think about.
The point is that if Gard would have called time out, he'd have preferred this shot over several other Gator options.

I've always thought that in a last second full court situation like that the offense has the advantage & it is advantageous fore the team going on defense to call a TO
The problem is that at this point, almost any option other than what actually happened looks better. My thought is that they were gassed and a TO would have allowed them to catch their collective breaths and get everyone on the same page.
Just watched the replay on CBSSPORTS Network. Couple of things, Pritzel passed up a wide open 3 or could have dribbled in closer with about 5:20 remaining but passed it back out the top. It turned into and empty possession by the Badgers. Hate to see anyone turn down a wide open shot like that. I think the bench was virtually scoreless because they were afraid to shoot or were told not to.
And maybe it would have been better for Hayes to have missed the last free throw. Maybe the Badgers get an offensive rebound or a scramble for the ball would have resulted with the clock starting and Chiozo not getting a running start. Sure, then a 2 would have beaten them but the clock may have run out before Florida would have gotten a shot off.
Next year looks like it could be tough based on what we saw from the bench this year. But many thought the same thing in 2015-16 season. Guys will grow and learn confidence. Kobe King looks like a real player. Not sure if they have any room for a JUCO transfer or a grad with another year of eligibility or not. And the schedule of where they play the single conference games will make a difference too.
F'UM BUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like Tschmack, but with good hair and money.
Oregon is doing a crazy good job of getting back on defense. Just pure hustle. Very impressive.
Ducks look good....real good
Josh Jackson is the real deal
It's why the NCAA tourney is the best event in sports
Nothing is certain
I was really tired and fell asleep only to wake up just after midnight, immediately go online for the game, and get deflated by how they lost (realizing though that how the Badgers got into OT in the first place was an incredibly unlikely shot).
Anyway, I read all the posts and I have two questions about the game.
What was the status of the game when Iverson could have easily stuffed the ball (score, how much time left, anything else relevant)?
How many FT's did the Badgers miss in the overtime period.
What a tough, tough loss. Us fans of Wisconsin teams have had our successes, but boy, have we suffered some tough losses as well.
Badgers were up by 2, 35.2 seconds left when dunk was blocked.
As for FT, Florida was 3 of 4; Badgers were 9 of 12. Hayes was 6 of 10 and Happ was 1 of 2 and Showalter was 2 of 2. One of Hayes misses resulted in an offensive rebound and the Badgers scored 2 on the possession.
A tough game to lose, but it was a very good college basketball game to watch. The Florida guy made an incredible shot. I think if we would've won, beating S. Carolina without BK would've been tough unless one of our bench players stepped up and had an incredible game, but from what we've seen so far our bench scoring is on life-support.
I have read nothing that said Koenig would not have been able to play today. he had cramps, not a pulled hammy.
Thanks, ammo!
Decisive play in season-ending loss provides 'what ifs'
Good piece about the final play.
2 interesting takes from the USC, Fla game.....USC guy (Notice) takes the ball to the rim hard for a breakaway dunk to basically seal the game and Frank Martin calls a TO after it to set up his D.
It was a great game to watch, UK, UNC should be too.
Way different being up 7 or up 2 or 4.
I'm not a fan of a), missing the free throw on purpose or b) calling a time out to set the defense.
4 seconds is too much time IMHAACO to miss the free throw on purpose. I don't call a time out because I would take our guys over your guys in a last second, no time out situation to do the right thing and I want the offense to scramble.
I certainly look wrong in hindsight considering they made the shot and at least one guy for the Badgers looked lost on what to do.
ammo posted:Way different being up 7 or up 2 or 4.
Agree but .....hindsight is 20/20. That's what's fun about sports.
It's an interesting concept. Not so much about calling the TO but bricking the second free throw. You could always get the rebound or get fouled or trap the opposing guy (like they did against Nova). I just hated seeing the Florida guy speed up the court and take an uncontested albeit miracle heave.

The other problem with missing the second and only being up one is that if there is a Badgers foul on the rebound, one or two seconds would run off the clock and then Florida would walk to the other end with a chance to make two FTs to go up one with very little time left on the clock.

From Saturday's paper: "Bronson Koenig added 13 but hit just 4 of 13 shots and was ineffective in the overtime because of a right-hamstring injury suffered in the final seconds of regulation."
