Bart Starr Hoping To Attend Week 2 Game vs Vikings

So you don't have to read the entire report:

"Bart Starr is not only a Green Bay Packers legend, but he's also one of the legendary figures of today's NFL as was the first Super Bowl MVP. And it's very possible Packers fans will get to see Starr again when the Packers hit the field this fall.

Starr's son, Bart Starr Jr., attended the Packers Hall and Fame banquet and he announced that his dad and mom are hoping to attend the Packers Week Two matchup against the Minnesota Vikings (via Rob Demovsky of ESPN). Bart Starr Sr. has had his share of health concerns over the years but during the Hall of Fame banquet, a video was shown of Starr throwing a football.

The last time the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback was in Green Bay was back in October 2017 when the Packers took on the New Orleans Saints. Starr's wife, Cherry then announced that it would be the last time the two would travel to Green Bay due to health concerns. The couple currently resides in Alabama, a place where Bart Starr was born and raised."

From Peter Kings column today.....

Though she assumed Bart could no longer hear, Cherry put her face next to his cheek and whispered into his ear, “Bart, darling, I love you so much. Thank you for giving me such a beautiful life.”

“I love you too,” he whispered back.

Bryan Bartlett Starr, 85, died the moment he finished saying those four words.

OMGAWD.......

Here's the link to the entire story, which King took from an ESPN story by Ian O'Connor:  linky

It's actually a wonderful story about Cherry and how she's doing now... and yes, it's a tear-jerker.

from the story link:

"He called his own number in subhuman conditions to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the Ice Bowl, and he played through all kinds of injuries, including a broken sternum.  One Sunday morning, after Bart suffered three broken ribs, Cherry watched him roll out of bed and onto the floor. He got on his hands and knees, somehow pulled himself to his feet, and left the house to go play the game."

holy crap, my respect for Bart just went up even higher.  a broken sternum and he played football?!??!!  dear gawd, the pain had to be incredible.  I had a bruised sternum once and I hated it.  I can't even imagine broken.
and playing with three broken ribs is just about the same - incredible!   you won't see any of today's fancy boys doing anything like that.

Also:

"A couple of years ago, after informing New England Patriots special-teams ace Matthew Slater by speakerphone that he had won the character and leadership award named after her husband, Cherry said she blitzed Tom Brady to the rest of the Pats in the room. "I said, 'Tom, I know you're listening to me, honey. You are a great quarterback, but you're not nearly as great as Bart was.'"

The crazy confluence of Bart being drafted as a disposable pick before Vince arrived in GB followed by Vince being read the riot act by Starr to never dress him down in front of the men Lombardi expected Starr to lead. That’s a 30/30 for the ages.

Starr / Lombardi. Brady / Belichick. Montana / Walsh.

Thats the best QB / Coach partnership in order. Ever. Period.
