Bishop one of my favorite players but this was the right move. Hawk will gradually lose playing time, hopefully, as one of the younger guys asserts himself.

Jones wasn't as bad in the S.F. game as some here claim. In fact he was one of the only ones able to chase down the guy they have at QB, can't recall his name, Coppertone, or something. Jones was really tough in most games and does have speed, so this was a great signing. I think he'll only get better. Whichever new guy steps up will also be faster than Bishop or Hawk and make our defense better able to move toward the ball.

We have maybe the leagues best group of CB's and I think great outside LB's. The d-line is a bigger concern. That's where our defense needs it's biggest improvement. They need to better plug the middle and if they can provide even minimal push up front than I believe we'll be a top 5 defense. Raji, D.Jones and one more big body in the middle (other than Pick) may be the key to the season.
Jolly may not make the team but if he does and gets back to what he was than he could be a difference maker.

Now if Capers can figure out this young man's game...

Yeah we need some fast Dogs on D to stop Coppertone!

‏@PatKirwanCBS: talkin w'Desmond Bishop-Said he could return to GB if all things equal. he may consider NYG&Jax but I got feelin he picks a team tonight.

Des also visited Minnesota and KC according to various reports.
http://www.packersnews.com/art...ers-from-three-teams

"Desmond Bishop has no shortage of options as it pertains to picking a new home in the NFL, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

On Friday afternoon, Rapoport reported the former Packers inside linebacker is mulling offers from Minnesota, Kansas City and the New York Giants after receiving his release from Green Bay on Monday (http://tinyurl.com/kpx8lyl)"
Even if I buy into the argument that they wanted Jones over Bishop because they needed a ILB that could cover better than Bishop, and that they took Hawk over Bishop because cutting Hawk was more damaging to the cap (and I'm not entirely sure I do buy that argument), I still think this was a bad move. The Packers don't need the 3 point something million in cap room they get from cutting Bishop right now. As far a I can tell (and believe me I looked) he wasn't due a big roster bonus anytime soon. It seems like an unnecessary risk to take right now.

What if something happens to Hawk or Jones, they same way it did to Bishop last year?

If Bishop passed his physical, it doesn't seem like there's any reason to consider him a bigger injury risk now.

I have to figure there is something to this we don't know. For years they refused to give him a chance to start despite his preseason performances. Now they've cut him in favor of lessor players.

For a GM with a track record of overpaying LBs, this is not only a weird move, its completely out of character.

I would love it if Thompson were to write a book after his retirement so we could finally understand what was going on behind the scenes. Of course, that would be even more out of character.
It's been said that Hawk's value, and the reason he's still on the roster, is his knowledge of the defense and his ability to make all the necessary calls. Perhaps that is the reason an injury had to occur to get Bishop on the field and is the reason he's gone now. Football is 90% mental and 20% physical.
Surprise, surprise!

@ProFootballTalk: Desmond Bishop agrees to one-year deal with vikings, per source with knowledge of situation.

@TomPelissero: I'm told Desmond Bishop will compete at both middle and weak side linebacker. Should be interesting.
If not for their cap situation, Jermichael would be commuting from the Twin Cities this year in preparation for next.

Initial reports are 1 year $1.5 million. Incentives could push it closer to $2 million. That tells me the hammy isn't close to 100%. It's low risk deal and at this point it's probably their best option.
yep, given that contract, there appears to be LOTS of questions about his health.
so, I'll just say, he'll be lucky to play all 16... but at least he doesn't have to worry about playoffs.

That's the "old bishop"...and that player doesn't exist anymore except in our memories. Thanks Desmond !

The new bishop is older, slower, recovering from (1) major leg injury, (1) minor leg injury and learning a new defense (for which he is ill-suited) on a team that had no other viable options in late June; just as you would expect from a 2nd rate franchise.

Agreed. Not only would that contract have been larger but if truly healthy I assume at least 1-2 other teams would have bid for his services. Still it should surprise no one he landed with the Queens. Under the term penis envy, really should be the Queens logo.
I swear. If I read one more comment from a f*****g numb nut Viking fan that Jennings and Bishop are Queen's because GB committed 30% of their cap to AR and Clay I'm going to f*****g lose it. What a disillusioned collection of phucksticks. AR and Clay account for 14.7% of GB's cap this year, 22% in 2014, 24% in 2015. If NOTHING changes and the cap stays flat the most they'll EVER count against the cap is 28.2% in 2017. Thanks Ted.

Reading some Queen comments today it struck me how vast, deep, and hard that envy runs. And you really don't have to go back any farther than 2009 when they completely came unhinged. That fan base was already unstable given every unimaginable, unexplainable, and completely improbable way they somehow managed to swipe defeat from the jaws of victory.

But in 2009 when they had Favre, and they beat GB twice, and WI was at the absolute apex of it's hatred for MN they knew it, loved it, worshiped it, flaunted it and they truly thought everything finally had lined up for their greatest moment of achievement. They were winning the Super Bowl with Brett Favre!

Favre s**t the bed Green Bay beat them twice and Aaron Rodgers won a Super Bowl and the Super Bowl MVP within the span of 13 months. And Queen fans were left holding a bag of dog s**t wondering how things went so horribly wrong. Again.

F**k the Vikings. F**k their dumbs**t fans.

As Satori said. Onward.

I love you, man.
Let 'em gloat. We've all seen this movie 100 times. These idiots puff out their cowardly chests only to skulk off when it all turns to **** like it has every single season for 53 freaking years.

Everybody has that loser cousin, uncle, perhaps brother in the family that's just smart enough to be dangerous. He's always showing up at holiday dinners talking about some 'really big deal' he's working on that will be a 'life changer' when it's done. Then you never hear about it again and all you do hear about is that his 4th marriage is in the crapper, he's behind on his child support payments again and he's moved into a studio apartment to 'save some money' for down the road. He's also looking for work as usual but he's got a 'great idea' for a new venture.

Over the years, you learn to tolerate this moron a couple of times a year but you never respect him any more than you do what you leave in the pot for your morning BM. These asswipes are all that guy. That's why they're not a rival. Win something. Even just once. Make history for something other than total failure and embarrassment. Until then, go **** yourselves. Chicago is a rival. Detoilet is a rival. These dip****s are completely without merit in every way imaginable, so once again let them gloat. It's actually pretty funny.
And right on cue, Al chimes in to completely prove my theory.

Hi readers. Just a strange post, but, who knows, maybe I can bring a pair of people together. Tonight, I had an old friend get in touch with me, wondering if I knew of anyone who had money to invest.

{Sadly, he didn't even ask me, as unless the business is gumball vending, I lack the funds.}

I will share more if you wish to hear, but he is willing to either do a short term loan or sell a part of his business. He's looking for $4-5K.

Shoot me an email if interested. Ramblings does not accept any liability, I'd just set up a meeting.
I remember one of the local beat guys (guessing Rob Demovsky but I could be wrong) that felt Bishop's injury was somewhat comparable to Frank Zombo's with relation to being closer to the knee than in the muscle mass.

Bringing both Jones (healthy and seasoned) and Francois (ST mainstay on a make it or break it year) back were the cover on the depth chart for letting Bishop go. I'm ok with that given the severity of Bishop's injury.

It's interesting that the players never end up in Chicago or Detroit. It's not uncommon for players to want to stay in the same division. I guess they figure they have a better chance of success because they know the guys they're going against in at least six of the games.

I liked both Bishop and Jennings and hope they both play well* with the Vikings still losing. I hope Bishop regains his health. He was a high character guy while he was here.

*save when they play the Packers

One of the best impressions Bishop left me with was talking to the media when the rest of the defense ducked after the 2012 season. Fair or not I hold it against Hawk that he didn't face the press. He should be the leader of the D in that situation and handle the heat with professionalism and leadership. If Bishop never gets hurt chances are Hawk would be the one on the outside looking in right now.

Best case scenario is Manning wins the job from Hawk. Certainly won't be an easy task, but I see the Packers liking the ILBs to work as a tandem and Hawk is clearly not the long term future as Jone's pair. Manning seems like a fiery guy but he has to earn the staff's trust. I think it's fair to remember that there hasn't been all that much competition at ILB the last few years. I think that all changes in 2013. Hawk grumbled the last time he wasn't the starter on opening day. He may have to deal with it again this year.

Training camp reps to young guys and trust in increased responsibility are the sweat the Packers invest in developing young guys. The cold reality of the NFL is the guy with less damage is usually the better option if for nothing more than availability.

Unconfirmed of course and purely speculative.
As long as it's less than 4 hours, we're ok.
per PFT, even less than was originally thought.

And so it was for former Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop, who did a one-year deal in the hopes of getting back to the open market in 2014. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, his contract with the Vikings pays up to $1.35 million.

“Up to” is the key. The high end arises from playing time. The low end likely will be the minimum salary for a seventh-year player: $840,000.
