For the 3rd time in his Badger coaching career Bo Ryan has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year. For a team that was picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference, this years team kept alive the tradition of a 1st round bye in the Big Ten Tournament. It's the 13th straight year that Bucky has a 1st round bye.

Also Jared Berggren was chosen to the 2nd team All Big Ten and Sam Dekker and Ben Brust were Honorable Mention All Big Ten. Dekker was also named to the All Freshman team.

Congrats to Coach Ryan, and also the Jared, Ben and Sam.

Definitely one of his best coaching jobs. Ryan and the staff had to make a lot of yong players grow up quickly this year. It started pretty rough, but as we have seen from Michigan St in recent history, it's not how you start it's how you finish.

I dont expect more than a sweet 16 run from this team. Maybe they'll get a good bracket and make a deep run. But it's the next 3 years that are going to be fun. Gasser, Brust, Jackson make a great 3 G lineup, with Marshall as added depth. Assuming Gasser comes back 100%, it's going to be exciting. All the younger Gs improve tremendously this season, which really brightens the future.
I as well thought this could possibly be his worst team since arriving in Madison. And by golly, he gets a 4th place finish in the toughest conference in the country.

Hoop is right about incoming recruits. Ryan's best talent may be on it's way (or already there when it comes to Dekker). If the newspaper clipping are right about these guys, the athleticism many have begged for is coming. Gonna be exciting!

Agree 100%. Dekker is way too good not to have seen the floor. Also, if he would have averaged only 3 minutes per game, Ryan would have been a complete moron not to have red shirted him.

I think TJack was a surprise but not sure if he is a "breakout" player. With Gasser (and possibly Koenig...yes...possibly) back I actually could see his playing time drop dramatically. I guess I'm just not sold on him.

I will state however, that if I was a betting fowl, I wouldn't bet on my above statement.

Rong rong rong rong!!! Bo has had lots of talented freshman, Butch, Steinsma, Taylor, yet how much did they play as freshman? Very little. Dekker would have been no different if what I posted before was true.

And for what it's worth, I think you'll see Gasser go back to the 2 guard as he was when coupled with Jordan Taylor. IMHO Jackson does a pretty good job of drive and dish, and he can get even better. Gasser is more of a shooter.

you are venturing into the Taylor/Finley territory of preposterous statements now. Polar, Steimer and JT weren't ready to play...Dek was/is. Ryan will play frosh if they are ready. He just hasn't had many that have been.
I will make one more comment (maybe) about this playing freshman thing. Koenig, besides UW, was recruited by Duke and UNC among others. In this day and age of college hoops, Ryan will have to play freshman (if they are ready of course) if he wants to get top line recruits. And they should play if they are better than what they have.

agree with this too, imo Gasser was always going to be the interim PG until someone emerged.

Jackson emerged. he is very strong(physically) at that position and is only going to get better ... and Marshall is wildcard, changeup that I think will give Bucky the top spot at PG for the next couple of years in the big10.
If Koenig proves to be as good as the clippings, it's Marshall that will be the odd man out. He's the guy that got more PT than he should have. I like his game, but the month he has been a non-factor. Very erratic.

Gasser as and off G feels likely. But really in this offense, there really isn't a PG per se. Once they start "swinging", the ball moves around too much to have that purely defined PG (if run properly anyway).
I like GM- but his play has been pretty bad the last few weeks. He's really struggling with the pressure.

With Brust graduating after next season, having GM get the time this year will hopefully reap dividends. Gasser and Jackson will graduate together, and Koenig and Marshall will hen hav it to themselves, theoretically. Having 4 capable Gs is not a bad thing.
Certainly, it is rare that Freshmen play much for Ryan. But with only Kaminsky returning in the 4/5 slots, there are a lot of minutes for Vitto Brown and Nigel Hayes to possibly earn. They are both pretty good looking recruits. Andersen doesn't look like a guy that is going to ever see the court for the UW. And Dukan also hasn't shown much. Going to be a guard oriented team. Had Uthoff not been a pussy, he'd probably be the starting 4 as a Soph.
Was anyone else as impressed as I was with the Big Ten coach of the yr in the final 7 minutes yesterday. In a game where 51 points will win it he came up with, well, lets be honest here, nothing. Bruiser clanging one, guards unable to get the ball to anyone with a prayer much less creating much for themselves.

I like Bo, best Badger coach ever and I go back to John Erickson, best yr at Madison for him IMO but 7 minutes but it seems to me that the coach of the yr has to come up with something in these situations.
Ryan deserved the honor with the success he had in the toughest conference in the country with that talent.

Losing to OSU playing your third game in three days against top 10 teams is nothing to be ashamed of.

But I have to say, I am still perplexed at his strategy regarding fouling. Another gaffe, IMO, yesterday in the final two minutes...

Two words: Tired legs. X's and O's were out the door. And Bruiser was 5 of 12 from 3 thus far at that point in Chicago. You win some, you lose some. It's not like they hadn't played the #6 and #3 teams in the country the two days before or anything.
