That is a positive development. They’ll need it to beat Miami, but Giannis is not ready to lead a championship run.

Holiday adds a lot of toughness. I'm not sure why they have DDV in instead of Tucker. I'd be interested to know why.

Tucker drew some fouls but he harassed Butler quite a bit.  Holiday was their best player today.

Portis needs to get more minutes.  He created a lot of problems for Miami.

DDV is just a guy at this point.  He’s the Hiura of the Bucks.

With the exception of the Butler runner to tie it in regulation, he is on defense. The problem on defense is giving up 20 3s on 50 attempts.

The FTs are the biggest problem. I think it affects his ability to finish at the basket late in games because he often seems to try to avoid contact to make sure he doesn't have to shoot pressure FTs.

Thank God for Jrue is all I can say.  The rest of the backcourt other than Jrue.... ugghh.

That front office screwup where they failed to get the fine shooting guard from Sacramento this past offseason showed up big today.  DiVincenzo and Forbes just look like a playoff atmosphere is too big for them.  Donte is a high effort guy but just isn’t skilled enough to get as many minutes as he is forced to.

Hopefully they can contribute more than they did today but I have my doubts going forward.

Hiura had an OPS of 938 as a rookie and hit 19 HRs in 84 games. He looked like the next Braun or Molitor at the plate as a rookie.

DDV has never looked like a future star in the NBA. As you say, he's JAG.  He's a guy that's probably better suited to the Connaughton role (10-15 minutes of energy off the bench). He plays hard, you have to honor him at least a bit at the 3 point line, and he's a plus defender, but he's always struggled to finish at the rim and he's just an average shooter from deep.

I think a lot of his status is based on one legendary NCAA title game. He had one of the best national title games in history and was great in the other Final 4 game as well. But if you look at his college stats, he was only a career 38% 3 point shooter on a VIllanova team that was loaded with talent and got him a lot of open looks.

The guys that are lights out NBA 3 point shooters are usually better college 3 point shooters than 38%. Forbes hit 45% in college. Curry was 41% on a one-man Davidson team. There are some exceptions (Klay was 39% in college), but DDV has never been a good enough shooter from deep to overcome the fact he's one of the worst guys in the league finishing near the rim.

We are not exactly happy with the way this played out even with a win, but I wonder what the Miami message boards are like in a game where their supporting players went off (Robinson and Dragic were 12 for 23 from three and had 49 points), but their two max contract players were 8 for 37 from the floor).

Butler was awful. 4 for 22 from the floor. . A lot of that is because Holiday, Giannis, and Tucker got most of the minutes guarding him.

With the exception of the Butler runner to tie it in regulation, he is on defense. The problem on defense is giving up 20 3s on 50 attempts.

FYI....Miami Heat playoff record, BTW.... Everytime I watch the Bucks in the playoffs the opponents are breaking some team record

I’m not sure Robinson and the Dragon can play much better than they did today.  Yes, Butler struggled but let’s be clear the Bucks threw Tucker and Giannis and Holiday at him.  That’s no easy task to overcome.

Giannis was subpar as was Middleton and they still scratched out a win.  This is the impact of Holiday.  Miami has no answer for him and Lopez and Portis caused problems for the Heat as well.

Good grief guys... there is nothing but criticism on this thread. You win, you did your job. Early afternoon games have ALWAYS been rough for this team- especially for Giannis. No more of those, now.

The Bucks played the game like a team who hadn’t played in a week playing a 1:00 start. So did Miami, except for that backcourt shooting 20/50 from 3.  Giannis played a poor game by his standards, and had 26/18. Holiday shows his value. Middleton buries the game winner.

Lost in all bitching is the fact that the Bucks held Miami to 16/49 from inside the arc. Bucks were for their part 5/31 from 3... and won the game. An ugly, rusty, grunt-it-out game that last year they did NOT win in the bubble. They lost that game last year.

Lots to learn from, lots to adjust to. Gotta hold serve at home. This is going to be a TOUGH series.

The adjustments both coaches make off game 1 will be interesting. Both teams clearly rusty- but the Miami backcourt advantage will continue to be the means with which Miami presses the Bucks. Their bench was 39-15 over the Bucks bench, but Dragic had 25 of those. The Bucks starters outplayed the Miami starters by a lot.

And the Giannis FT thing- we KNEW this was going to happen. It was in a game thread a couple weeks ago- it’ll get called in a clutch moment in the middle of a tight game and it’ll throw him off the rest of the game. That’s less on Giannis and more on the coaches. He had the ball a 12 count for fucks sake- you gotta play smarter.

And why does this game already mean he’s not capable of leading the team to a championship? Honestly, the guy goes for 26/18 in a playoff game and he’s trash? The Bucks aren’t even in the playoffs without Giannis. He’s not MJ, or Kobe. At least not yet. He’s one of 3 really important players that have to play well for the Bucks to have a chance to win a Title. He had plenty of great moments yesterday- and some ugly ones. But that whole game was ugly. Miami shot 36% from the floor. Ugly. Bucks shot 17% on 31 attempts from 3 yesterday. Ugly. Both teams had 17 turnovers. Ugly. Bucks missed 13 of 30 FTs. Ugly.

They can win ugly for 15 more games from my point of view. Don’t give a fuck about aesthetics.

MJ lost 9 of his first 10 playoff games. Didn’t win a series until the shot over Ehlo- then promptly lost the next series in 5 to the Bad Boy Pistons. Then the next year. Then the next year. 3 straight seasons MJ couldn’t beat the Pistons. Then they did. 6 seasons of playoff failures where he had an MVP, scoring titles, DPOTY awards, and All Star accolades.

And Giannis works like MJ. He won’t quit. He’ll keep pushing, play harder, do more. And he’s not MJ- one of the most instinctive players to ever play the game. Giannis came here from Greece with no pedigree, no college, no American game to guide him from grade school. And here he is- 26/18 in a playoff game against a nemesis team.

Anthony Davis is remembered for having lead the Kentucky Wildcats to a national title. He scored 6 points in that game. But had 16 boards, 5 assists, 6 blocks, and 3 steals. If Giannis is going to struggle scoring, do other shit.
