That's how I'd do it. I kind of wonder if the starter's relationship with Flynn may influence the team's decision to some degree, though.

I wouldn't be heartbroken whatever decision they make, really. It's pretty clear that Tolzien's ascending and Flynn is probably as good as he's gonna be. If they could keep Flynn on the 53 and sneak Tolzien onto the practice squad that would be the dream scenario, but I have a hard time believing zzzzzz would clear waivers.

The part of the rule that applies to Tolzien states, in part, that "a player who has earned one or more accrued seasons would not be eligible for a practice squad unless the player spent fewer than nine games on a club’s 46-player active list in each of his accrued seasons."

Citing that rule, a league spokesman said: "Tolzien is eligible to be on the practice squad. … While Tolzien does have three accrued seasons, he's never been on an active roster for nine or more games in any of those three [seasons]."

Can't see the team risking trying to get Tolzien through waivers so his practice squad eligibility really isn't relevant. Flynn has flourished in the Packer system but he really lacks a legitimate NFL arm and his desirability with other teams is pretty limited.

It's been said in other threads, I don't know why a team would bring in Tolzein a week before the season, knowing it will take a few weeks before he'll be ready to play. Also, Z might have more upside, but the value of any upside is for a trade in the future. He's not going to take over for 12, and hopefully he doesn't get much playing time, so why not risk putting him on the PS, and hopefully next year he is the clear #2.

Also remember there will be 20+ other QBs hitting the open market. Many of the potential or already cuts (Ponder, Pryor, Whitehurst, Stanzi, Grossman, Daniel,) have more NFL experience than Tolzien. Then you have Buffalo who only have 2 QBs on their current roster and neither are any good.

I thought he wasn't, but according to guys that cover the team, he is. I think it was Demovsky that confirmed it with the league office.

Not so fast YA.

Contrary to what even he thought, Green Bay Packers quarterback Scott Tolzien still has practice-squad eligibility.

Dolphins waived RB Daniel Thomas and RB/KR Marcus Thigpen.

The Fins finally admit their mistake on Thomas, whom ex-GM Jeff Ireland traded up to select in the second round of the 2011 draft. Thomas almost single-handedly held Miami's running game hostage for the past three seasons.

He's eligible, hope that clears it up for you.

Interesting. If true, one of our backups is getting cut most likely.

I'm still guessing Flynn, unless he's the new Doug Pedersen & Rodgers is Favre

Edit: So I guess no pick for us from the Patriots? That cagey Billy B. Man he is smeart.

It's a deep CB group. Williams, Shields, House, Hayward seemed to all have strong offseasons and Bush will always be a mortal lock. That's 5 right there, hard to justify more than 5 unless the 6th looks REALLY good. Rolle really didn't start his strong play until the end.

Hope that isn't true. Rolle completely outplayed Goodson. Goodson has no business being on the 53 man roster

Special teams or not, I don't understand the lovefest for Jarrett Bush, he's been around for about 8 years and is no better than our 5th best CB, time to cut ties and keep one of these younger cheaper guys like Rolle who has a lot of upside and could possibly progress up the depth chart...there are just some players on this roster that seem like they have secret pics of Mike and Teddy getting "friendly" with each other or something
Players like Rolle are a dime a dozen. We will see another Jumal Rolle next offseason. Bush can play Safety and CB and is a very strong ST player, you have to have strong ST players. It's too critical of an area, some of you forget our coverage units from a few years ago before MM and TT started taking STs seriously and investing in some quality coverage players.

As the cuts roll in today, try this exercise:

What if the Packers hadn't lost Finley, Abbrederis, Raji, Barclay and Franklin to injury ?

See if you can cut 5 more players to make room for all of them...

This might be why he was cut

1m

I'm guessing that releasing Rolle was so that they could keep Banjo. He would be a fifth safety. Just a guess at this point.

May have been a move with the ST unit in mind. Banjo has looked good there for them.

This allows them to keep RIchardson and Banjo, and with Hyde able to play CB, Packers would be at 6(Shields, Tramon, Hayward, House, Bush, Hyde).

TT has specific knowledge regarding the other 31 teams that we are all unaware of.

Rolle definitely outplayed Goodson in the pre-season but there is a reason they cut Rolle even if we can't see it right now. We'll find out eventually. It will be crystal clear at that point.
