Chad Clifton Interview by Jason Wilde

quote:
GREEN BAY – Chad Clifton isn’t ready to call it a career just yet. But he is still trying to adjust to the idea of being a former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl left tackle.

“A little bit,” Clifton confessed during an appearance on Green & Gold Today Friday. “After 12 years, to hear ‘former,’ it’s a bitter pill to swallow, definitely.”

That said, there wasn’t a trace of bitterness in his voice as he spoke about his 12 years with the Packers, a run that began with him assuming the left tackle duties as a rookie second-round pick in 2000 and not relinquishing them until an injury-marred 2011 season led to his release on April 23, when he failed his physical following offseason back surgery.

However, Clifton has not officially retired and doesn’t plan on filing his paperwork with the league just yet. He didn’t rule out the possibility of playing this season for another team, or the idea of returning to Green Bay if the Packers were to lose a tackle or two and need him as an emergency replacement. continue
Past the click Jason Wilde has more quotes from Clifton about; his rehabilitation, talking about how he would be willing to play a 'Tauscher Role' if the Packers were to suffer injuries, details the injuries he suffered last year, where he sees Aaron Rodgers career headed, and a very complimentary assessment of Marshall Newhouse.

For a guy who's been one of the quietest Packer greats ever to play in Green Bay he talked to a great extent in this interview.

Chad Clifton has persevered through perhaps as many injuries as any player in the history of the game of football and I can't believe he's not hanging it up after everything he's been through. This is a guy that really loves football. He's essentially telling the Packers he'll work his ass off all year -for free- just in case they need him. That's an honorable man.

If he can get himself healthy and pass a physical I'd have no problems with the Packers keeping him on the ready list if injuries hit hard. I don't think he'd play for anyone in Division if called but I wonder where he would accept a deal.

Why not? I wouldn't expect any former Packer to turn their nose up at a job offer within the division.

I think we sometimes forget that the only people left in sports that are loyal to the organization are the fans... and even then the ranks are littered with dumdums.

The era when real men played football. In those days they would have donated their brains to science before they retired.

If Clifton can find a starting job somewhere (even with the Bears) then he'd be remiss not to take it.

Granted, some of the younger guys on the line could use him as a mentor, but not at the cost of a roster spot.

Best of luck. Regardless, we'll see Clifton in the Ring Of Honor sometime down the road alongside Tauscher.
I'm pretty sure every member of the ring of honor is also in the pro football hall of fame. Don't think Cliffy is going to make that cut. It would be nice of the Packers to bring him out on family night to let the crowd say goodbye to him.
