His contract is guaranteed, so he will be on IR and with the team, right?  Reason I ask is because the last thing this kid needs is to be given a 20k injury settlement and be sent on his way.

Most likely Kuhn's last year with the team and I like the idea of bringing him back as a fullback.

I think he's eligible for an injury settlement, if the Packers want to send him on his way.  I'd think they'd keep him and put him on IR though.  Dude's got talent, just needs to be developed, just needs time.  I mean it took Julius Thomas 2 full years to develop into the TE he is now.  That's probably the time frame for Colt.  

Trust ted but colt seems to have the iq of uncle rico.

The rub on IR is that he won't be able to practice.  Dude needs to practice as much as time will allow.  He will be recovering and rehabbing for x amount of time, which from what I understand wouldn't be a full season.  Tricky.

Did a little digging out of curiosity and found this.

 

"The CBA protects players who are injured performing football activities. Essentially if you are injured your salary is protected, but it is only protected to a point. Remember there are various extents of injuries that occur in the NFL. An ACL tear is devastating and will cause a player to miss the entire season. That is a major injury and the player will earn his entire Paragraph 5 salary for the year. "

 

So, if they have to pay him full year salary, they might as well keep him on IR and around the facility for rehab.  Good for him.

Lyerla will go down as the biggest non story hype job in GBP history

There were other bigger non-stories, I just can't remember who they were.

It's a sad state of affairs when some dip**** like Lyerla garners so much attention.  

Still waiting for the Tori Gurley All-Pro announcement.  Preseason is all about hype.  Nothing new. 

 

Lyerla had a long road ahead of him to make a major contribution.  Hope they can make this work so he gets to practice.  He had two receptions for Oregon last year having not played since 9/7/2013.  If he goes IR, I almost think he's doubtful to make a contribution in 2015.  That said, hopefully he is maturing because that is also a factor for him.

Here's hoping Belichick or some other organization doesn't pick him up. If I'm not mistaken the first cutdown from 90 to 75 comes after this weekend's games, so not many teams are looking to add right now.

Why is he waived to be put on IR?  Can't we put him on IR without exposing him to the wire?

Nope.....any player within their 1st 4 years has to clear waivers.

 

Seattle lost their starting RT to the Browns a couple weeks ago.

Well, if he goes on IR after clearing waivers, he gets paid substantially more than if they cut him at the end of preseason and put him on the PS. He'd get paid the same amount  if another team claims him on waivers. Not rich money, but way better than PS pay.

So if Clowney blew out his knee right now, TX would have to keep him on the 53 man roster so he didn't get claimed?  Don't make sense. Im pretty sure IR keeps them protected and not counting against the 53

Remember when I mentioned "four accrued seasons" above? That's important. Any player with at least four accrued seasons is considered a "vested veteran" and is not subjected to the waiver process. Vested veterans become a free agent immediately upon their release and can sign with any team of their choosing. The NFL defines an accrued season as one in which a player appeared on the active 53-man roster for at least six games. Players with fewer than four accrued seasons must pass through the 24-hour waiver period, after which they too become a free agent.

So to answer your ? it looks like Clowney would have to be kept on the 53 and IR. 

I think it's something with the salary cap.  If Clowney got hurt and they IR him, they obviously would have no issue taking the salary cap hit.  However, I doubt the Packers want to have Lyerla's full salary hit their cap bc he has almost no value in the NFL right now.  I think waving him and then putting him on IR alleviates the cap hit in some way.  Having IR players that aren't waved first hit the salary cap prevents teams from hoarding young talent.  At at least this is my understanding.  

That makes sense.  If you don't want to have them count on your cap, you can cut them before putting them on IR.  If you don't want to risk the waiver wire, you have to eat the dead money.

Not surprising.  The Packers were the only team to invite him in for even a tryout and he never had a chance to even play in the preseason.  Any team signing him would be doing so based on media reports.  

 

We're probably looking at year one on IR, year two on the practice squad, and year three on the roster.
