RT is definitely the most intriguing position battle.

Newhouse, Barclay, Sherrod, Datko and Bakhtiari. I'd keep an eye of Datko. If he's healthy, he could be a fantastic NFL tackle

I guess anything's possible, but that would be a shock.

I don't think it would be a shock.  Datko was a highly thought of college player, but injuries kept derailing his college career.  He started out really rough last year in TC.  But toward the end of TC he started coming on.  Keep in mind his TC last year was his first football action in almost a year.  The only reason he dropped is his injury history.  If he had a normal healthy college career he would have been drafted in the first two rounds.  TT took a flyer on him in the 7th, and if he can beat the injuries, GB has a possible excellent football player.  Now how far he goes is all up to Datko.

I read somewhere that OT Derek Sherrod is a "new man".  Assuming that means he isn't favoring his broken leg and has his strength back, Sherrod, Barclay, Newhouse, and Datko will duke it out for RT.  I don't care if Newhouse is on the left or the right side, if he hasn't improved his lateral quickness and movement, teams will know he is beatable and put a guy on his side to take advantage of the situation.  With 40+ pressures allowed 2 years running, I would say the odds of him starting at any tackle position is fairly slim - unless his improvement is significant.

On defense, the improvement has to come from the one thing it doesn't now have - a consistent pass rush.  They have applied pressure at times but not enough to be called consistent.  A lot of people have talked about Jone and Perry - and I don't disagree - they should expect significant improvement from them.  But I think that Mike Daniels should also show significant improvement as well.  I think he is kind of forgotten.  But he generated pressure in college.  And I think that Josh Boyd could also surprise some people.  He didn't always get the sack, but he got a lot of penetration in college.  And if Raji can get off of blocks like he did in 2010, GB could be in better shape than most think.  The jury is still out on Jolly.

Getting sacks takes more than a single player getting into the backfield - usually.  And an opponent can only double team a couple guys at most - the rest have to be able to beat the single man they face.  I think we know by now that Wilson and Pickett can't do it.  And with Worthy out, GB needs more guys to step up.

Training-camp rosters, which increased from 80 to 90 in 2011 due to the lockout, remain at 90 this summer. Rosters must be cut to 75 players by 3 p.m. Aug. 27 and to 53 players by 5 p.m. Aug. 31. After 11 a.m. Sept. 1, clubs may establish a practice squad of eight players.

Team-by-team players on the hot seat

Green Bay Packers -- Outside linebacker Nick Perry.  Perry, last year's first-rounder, must bounce back after an injury-shortened rookie season. He participated in the spring workouts, but had to wear a brace on his surgically repaired left wrist, which ended his rookie year after only six games. In OTAs and minicamp, the team took a long look at defensive end Mike Neal as an outside linebacker because this year's first-round pick, Datone Jones, is penciled in as a starter at end.

Sorry..I don't see Nick Perry as being on the "hot seat".

Agree. I'm thinking Nick Perry is a player the coaching staff is counting on to contribute a lot this season.

Guys on the "hot seat" would be James Starks & Alex Green. Maybe a guy like Newhouse or Tramon Williams or AJ Hawk too.

When I think of "hot-seat" I think the player may not be on the team in September. Nick Perry is a lock. Starks, Green & Newhouse are not locks

I agree.  Save hot seat for the veterans that haven't produced yet like DJ Williams and Ryan Taylor.  Save it for MD Jennings whom we may not see in any quantity if he doesn't beat out McMillian. Save it for Ross who has just one job:  return man- because we don't need another 5th receiver with promise.  CJ Wilson may be able to play the piano, but I imagine he is also feeling the heat.

There's no way Nick Perry is going to let a UCLA 1st rounder like Datone Jones come into GB and be THE difference maker on defense in 2013. Likewise, Datone Jones isn't going to let two badass bookend LB's from USC grab all the headlines.

There's a method to Ted's madness.

There's going to be some wagering between those three this year on sacks... if things like that were allowed in the NFL that is....

Wilson and Bush are on the team for one reason. No one has proven the ability to provide better value to the 53. If guys like Josh Boyd and Micah Hyde can't take their jobs, it's not on the coaches. It's because they couldn't take advantage of the opportunity they were handed to show they're a better option.

It's got to drive coaches nuts each year to watch guy's piss away a potential pot of gold.

The real reason Wilson and Bush will make the roster is because if they are replaced, us fans won't have anyone to complain about.  Just think about that - fans with no one to complain about?  I don't know if we could handle that.

I agree about Perry - he is being counted on.  I felt sorry for him last year because in his first preseason game he gets a sack and then celebrates like Matthews.  But the replacement ref throws a flag. And then he delivers a hard but (IMO) clean hit on Luck and gets flagged.  Someone forgot to tell him about the 2-handed tag rule.

A big area of hope for training camp and the season for me is LESS INJURIES.  Wouldn't it be nice a have a rather injury-free year for a change.  There will always be some but seems like we're due for some good luck, injury-wise.

More stretching!

Wilson is just one of those guys that will always be on the pseudo hot seat.  He's a solid utility player that isn't flashy but just gets the job done in the role he's asked to play.

As far as the Bush comparison, Wilson hasn't been shredded like Bush when asked to step up and start.  You know what you have with Wilson.  I think Josh Boyd may be looked at as a Wilson type player but I really wonder is they might try him more at NT.

When the players report, the history of the Packers – and the goal for this season – hang above in the hallway to the locker room, but are also within reach.

So I wonder what The Queens hallway looks like ?  ?

The Packers, by my count, have 87 players after cutting QB Matt Brown today and WR Terrell Sinkfield a couple days ago.  I wonder if they will add QB Jordan Rodgers now that he is available.  I do wonder if they will fill the roster spots in the next couple of days.

On paper, this is a pretty damn good team and I'm really interested to see how the DL performs and what younger players step up and fill in some of the open slots, i.e. backup DB, WR, RB, etc.

Thompson has created an environment where the best person wins and the competition can only help some of these guys stay hungry.

I completely agree with Tschmack--TT does his job with the front office staff, it's up to the coach's and players to get the job done on the field. He's not always right about his picks, but no one bats 1.000, and I like the depth we have going into the season.

No. TT is a moron. He needs to be fired. so does Capers. You call that defense? This team sucks. Can't stop the run, can't stop the pass. We can't run or pass. Rodgers is a fairy and Bulaga is going to be awful at LT. I know because I watch football a lot.
